Bzzz...SLAP! This is the all too familiar sound of any number of the flying insects that claim the Culicidae family. This painful and annoying insect, most commonly know as the mosquito, has reminded each one of us in his own unique way that long sleeves and good mosquito repellant are key for survival in the Mississippi Delta and North Mississippi. While this was quite the annoyance, it only further cemented our ability to work together as a group for the tedious and sometimes delicate task of observing and collecting varying plant and animal species of Leroy Percy and Tishomingo State Parks. Our trip was unique in that it was not just simply observing and collecting data for documentation; no, it required our close attention to any tracks or evidence that signified an animal had been in the vicinity. Our indexing also included those animals that we may not have had direct access to, but could be heard from a distance. By not only documenting those animals we could see or catch, we were able to attain a greater data collection in the two state parks.
From the time we arrived at 6 am on Monday morning, we were under the constant guidance and leadership of some of the finest Mississippi has to offer in the realm of field research biology. Our main professor and chaperone, Dr. Rauch, gave us simple guidelines for appropriate behavior and what field biology is designed to accomplish—student directed collection and indexing of species in the two areas of Mississippi that were explored. Father Nature, as our trustworthy leader became known, was also our main provider of the books we used for identifying all the varying species of plants and animals. While Dr. Rauch deserves much credit and thanks, we also had a multitude of experts on the scene to guide us on the trails. Mrs. Margaret, a 4H agent in Handcock County who works with the Mississippi State University Extension Services, was a very insightful individual in the realm of differentiation between like plant and tree species and also provided for periodic comic relief. We also had two seasoned field biology veterans in leadership roles who have for many years made this trip possible. Dr. J William Cliburn, a retired biology teacher from Southern Mississippi and the founder of the field biology program, brought an immense amount of knowledge of almost every single plant and animal species we observed throughout our trip in both locations. Our second field biology veteran that deserves a big thank you is Dr. B. J. Martin. The founder of the field biology program at William Carey and Professor of Physiology at WCU's D.O. School, he was an essential tool in bringing living supplies to our temporary homes in the Delta and North Mississippi. He also played a vital role in assisting in animal and plant species recognition. The last person who joined us in our adventures was a guest Botanist from the Museum of Natural Sciences in Jackson, MS. Heather Sullivan was a great asset to our knowledge base and aided in plant recognition and general knowledge of identification.
We also would like to extend a big Thank You to the two gentlemen who allowed us to trample through their parks. Mr. Jim McKeiver, the park manager of Leroy Percy State Park, was very polite in allowing us to completely explore his park and allow us to watch the alligator feeding. Mr. McKeiver was also very polite to us students who wanted to fish by allowing us to use his fishing poles to catch brim. The second gentleman, who deserves a big thank you, is Mr. Bill Brekeen, park manager of Tishomingo State Park. He had a beautiful park that was kept very neat and clean, and we hope we left it that way! Thank you, gentlemen again for allowing us students to use your parks in our quest to index the plants and animals of East and North Mississippi.
