About the Mission Pennsylvania’s Office of International Business Development is combining Pennsylvania participation in Bangalore Bio 2004, with a mini- mission to Hyderabad, India. Pennsylvania companies will exhibit in the Pennsylvania pavilion June 15-17 and then travel to Hyderabad, India to attend one- on-one business meetings with premier biotechnology companies arranged by our overseas contract office. Logistics and support services will be provided by the Commonwealth’s overseas contract office in Bangalore, India. Why India? India’s Biotech Hubs: Bangalore, Hyderabad India is on the threshold of a biotechnology revolution. With the convergence of all the three knowledge-based sectors of Information Technology, Biotechnology and Pharma Technology, the country is poised to make rapid strides on the strength of synergies existing among them. The advantages India has are the large pool of scientific talent available at a reasonable cost, a wealth of R & D institutions, rich and varied bio-diversity, strong IT skills and an English speaking population. The States of Karnataka (capital city: Bangalore) and Andhra Pradesh (capital city: Hyderabad) have been in the forefront of the Biotech revolution in India. Biotech industry in Karnataka: Karnataka leads the Indian biotechnology revolution with its excellent infrastructure and a highly integrated environment for biotech research. It is host to a number of leading bio-tech companies and start-ups, as well as some of the finest R&D facilities in the world-the Indian Institute of Science (ranked 18th Best University in the world), the National Centre for Biological Sciences, the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, the University of Agricultural Sciences, the Central Food Technological Research Institute, and the Institute of Bio-informatics and Biotechnology. Karnataka was the first to set up a Vision Group on Biotechnology as well as the first to announce a Biotech Policy aimed at encouraging investments, developing infrastructure and enhancing human resources for this sector. On the anvil are biotech parks at Bangalore and Dharwad, a marine biotech park at Karwar, a biotech corridor at Bangalore, a center for human genetics and an institute of agri-biotechnology. Karnataka has a large number of biotech companies, ranging from start-ups to well established concerns such as AstraZeneca India, Biocon India, Cadilla, SmithKline Beecham and Wockhardt. Biotech industry in Andhra Pradesh: Andhra Pradesh is a premier biotech state in India. The Genome Valley near Hyderabad is India’s first state of the art biotech cluster providing world-class infrastructure to over 100 biotech companies. Andhra Pradesh’s pharmaceuticals sector is well known internationally for its skills in chemical synthesis and process engineering on the one hand, and its commitment to the invention of new molecules on the other, in addition to its speed to market.
