896_antik_s001-015_start.indd 9 20.08.2020 15.26 Jens Juel, L.A.

896_antik_s001-015_start.indd 11 20.08.2020 15.26 Jens Juel, Laurits Andersen Ring and Antiques from an English Manor House

Jens Juel was the leading Danish portrait painter of the 18th century, and with six works he is well-represented at this auction. During the Enlightenment, an unprecedented focus on childhood emerged as something valuable in itself spurred on by the pedagogical writings of the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The ideas gripped the imagination of the European artists as well, and here in Juel constituted the vanguard. At the auction, we have a unique portrait of a Russian prince, who, contrary to previous artistic traditions, appears as a real child with red cheeks, lengthy hair and a sweet expression on his face. The same is true in Juel’s oval portrait of a small, adorable girl with blonde hair and blue eyes. A slightly earlier portrait painter is the Swedish-born painter Carl Gustaf Pilo. We can present his portrait of Queen Louise wearing a yellow brocade dress and red ermine coat. The work originates from the Consul-General Johan Hansen’s large art collection (cat. no. 16, 20 and 7).

Another highlight of the auction is a series of 13 works by the Danish painter Laurits Andersen Ring. All the works were created at a time when Denmark was changing from an agricultural society to a modern, industrialized nation. Ring’s artistic focal point was man’s existential challenges during this time of upheaval, and the powerful depictions of people and melancholy landscapes have gained international resonance in recent years. The selection at the auction includes both snow-covered villages and depictions of people from Ring’s home region of South Zealand. Although his artwork is rooted in realism, the paintings always contain a second layer – a kind of Symbolist aesthetic that inevitably opens up for spiritual interpretations (cat. no. 32 and 41).

Surrounded by green forests, vast fields and babbling brooks in the beautiful area of Gloucestershire in England lies the picturesque manor house Avening Court. The place has roots dating back to the 11th century and has housed William I of England (also known as the Conqueror) and Queen Mathilda, among others. The charming manor house has for the past 35 years been the home of a family with Danish roots, who have tastefully decorated the place with primarily 18th-century antiques to match the history of the place. The family will now sell part of the furniture collection, including a rare Rococo mirror cabinet from Altona and sets of Danish Rococo chairs (cat. no. 165 and 166).

Among the auction’s largest antiques is a huge North Indian palace carpet from the late 1800s with arabesques, flowering vines and cloud formations. The carpet, which measures almost 9 x 8 meters, was weaved by Indian prisoners and was most likely made to order for the German Jägerhof castle in Düsseldorf (cat. no. 154).

The wristwatches are experiencing a bull market at the moment and attract a large, affluent audience at our auctions. This time the most expensive lot is an early Rolex ”Oyster Cosmograph”, ref. 6263 in 18k gold with a rare dial variant. It is accompanied by a steel model of the same reference, which has taken its name after the French film legend Jean-Paul Belmondo. Two vintage watches from the Italian Panerai are also in the running – one is a prototype from the mid-1980s, which was intended for the country’s frogman corps, the other is an original variant dating back to 1944 (cat. no. 118, 124, 131 and 116).

In the final part of the catalogue, you will find a plethora of jewellery, including a white gold ring with the clearest white diamond of approx. 3.77 ct. and two blood red Burmese Rubies. Green, blue, yellow and pink – it is certainly shaping up to be a colourful jewellery auction with the many coloured diamonds. One example is a white gold ring holding a pink diamond from the Argyle mine in Australia, which is now empty and will close later this year. Therefore, it is perhaps one of the last chances to become the owner of one of these distinctive pink diamonds (cat. no. 333 and 350).

276

On the following pages, we present a selection of literary gems from the now deceased Flemming Erik Pedersen’s (1931-2020) extensive book collection. Flemming Pedersen, who for several years worked as a valuation specialist of books and manuscripts for this very auction house, had a great passion for books from an early age, which resulted in an enormous knowledge of books, printing, book illustrations and history. Flemming Pedersen sat on the board of The Danish Society of Bibliophiles for many years, and in 2012 he was appointed an honorary member of the club.

At this auction, Flemming Pedersen’s great interest in , bookbinding and Danish history deserves to be highlighted. At two upcoming Online Auctions during the autumn and spring, Bruun Rasmussen will host the sale of the rest of the collection, which includes significant Danish works from the 16th and 20th centuries, beautiful bindings and manuscript fragments.

Translation in English: "The psalm is a fully arched wing Which your soul to God will bring There you can weep your pain away There all heaven’s joy will purvey The psalm and the silent prayer Is our life’s flower full of flair!"

Andersen first visited Bregentved in the summer of 1842, and throughout the rest of the 1840s, he continued to visit, especially as a regular guest at Christmas, the last time in 1849. This original manuscript has been attached to a version of Caspar Johannes Boye's "Spiritual Poems and Songs", which Andersen (or the Countess) gave as a gift on Christmas Eve in 1844.

267 HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN b. Odense 1805, d. Copenhagen 1875 Autograph greeting in German, signed. 9 lines. Dated Dresden, July 21, 1844. 8vo. Paper with gilt edges. Written to Baroness Wilhelmina van der Decken and her daughter. Bound in full paper, with bookplate. (FP) The leaf was written on 21 July 1844 in Dresden (mentioned in Hans Christian Andersen’s diary under the same date) to the Baroness Wilhelmine von der Decken, whom Andersen met and visited on several occasions during all his trips to Dresden, but especially during his first stay. The daughter Claudine v.d.D. (born 1816), who presumably lived with the mother at this time, had after her first meeting with Andersen begun to read “Nur ein Geiger” and was very taken with both the book and Andersen. Hence the allusion to the German edition of “Kun En Spillemand” (Only a Fiddler).

Andersen“.

From the almanac: "Gik til Fru Decken skrev i hendes og Døttrenes Album, den kjære, gamle Kone græd og kalde mit Søn, Claudine saae mig saa kjærligt i Øiet [...]." (21. juli 1844).

This set of the extremely scarce second printing contains in all 19 of Andersen's famous fairy-tales, incl. "Fyrtøiet" ("The Tinder Box"), "Lille Claus og store Claus" ("Little Claus and Big Claus"), "Prindsessen paa Ærten" ("The Princess on the Pea") and Den lille Havfrue (The little Mermaid).

"During Andersen's lifetime 162 of his Fairy Tales were published, but the scarcest and most difficult to obtain are these six little pamphlets. We do not know exactly how many, or how few, copies were printed, but we do know that no copy with all the title pages and tables of contents has ever been offered for sale by any dealer or at any auction. To my knowledge, only five or six complete copies of the first printings (1835-1842) still exist. Even the second printing of the six pamphlets in their entirety (1842-1847) is exceedingly scarce and difficult to obtain." (Jean Hersholt).

"The tales of Hans Christian Andersen are unique. [...] Andersen's stories signalized a new and fundamentally different approach to the writing of books for children". (PMM)

Copenhagen 1875 Autograph letter written and signed by both Edgar Collin and Hans Christian Andersen. 2 pages. Folio. Dated Schaffhausen, July [August] 17, 1855 and Zürich, July [August] 18, 1855. The letter is adressed to Jonas Collin, . Letterhead with printed vignette depicting the waterfall at Schaffhausen. [Below: Edgar Collin’s handwriting: ”Chüté de Rhin”. + A drawn sketch of the hotel]. [Edgar Collin’s handwriting:] "Here we lived right next to waterfall." With seal and postage stamps. Edges reinforced, stamp cut out, paper restored. Housed in full paper binding, with bookplate. (FP) Unique, joint letter to Augusta Collin from Andersen and her son Edgar, who were traveling together in Germany and Switzerland. The almanac text for this day: "came to Schaffhausen".

"At reise er at leve" ("to travel is to live") is an often quoted phrase by Hans Christian Andersen (in: Mit Livs Eventyr, 1855). He was a modern tourist in many ways and undertook around 30 journeys abroad during his lifetime. The travels had a huge influence on his writing and art. In 1855 he takes Edgar Collin on a “Grand tour” to Germany and Schwitzerland and eventhough these travels with the young men of the bourgeoisie not always were a succes according to the almanacs, Andersen states in the letter, that Edgar is a “meget elskværdig Reisekammerat” (a very pleasant travel companion).

These paper cuts were made by Hans Christian Andersen in the home of Admiral Frederik Laurentius Fiedler Sommer (1813-78) in Lyngby, where Hans Christian Andersen delighted Sommer's two young daughters, Elisabeth and Hedevig, with the picture book. Sommer was acquainted with Edvard Collin.

It is no secret that Hans Christian Andersen was a man of many talents. His imagination was constantly in motion and he expressed himself in many different ways from fairytales, stories and novels to collages, drawings and fabulous papercuts. Thematically they range from exquisitely pretty to hilarious funny motives, demonical, horrifying and profoundly poetic. In this book, there are two atypical paper cuts where the motifs differ from the poet's favourite motifs; dancers and swans, which he returned to again and again with only small variations. One is a very simple silhouette of a doe calf with one foreleg raised and its head laid back as it listens tensely. The second paper cut depicts a fantasy character of a slender male figure with a stork's head.

Extremely rare on the market.

(FP) This charming letter (mentioned in the diaries) is written to the young student Alfred Ipsen in Randers. In the let- ter, Andersen talks about his writings and describes his forthcoming 2 month long journey to Italy - a country he visited 8 times: (In English translation): "[...] I am sending you the small collection of fairy tales and stories I have written and published in various magazines and journals over the course of the last two years; "The Great Sea Serpent" and "The Gardener and The Gentlefolk" are the two youngest. In eight to ten days I will travel abroad for two months. I have been in poor health all winter and hope to gain some strength and vigor from this little excursion, however, the trip will not go further than to one of the lakes of northern Italy. I would be delighted to receive a letter from you. In Copenhagen, my address is Nyhavn No. 18. God bless [you. Your most attentive, Hans Christian Andersen."]

Olufsen was married to Kamma Sophie Ilsted, who was the daugther of Ida’s brother, the artist Peter Ilsted. In the beginning of the 18th century it became the fashion to print entire books using copperplates. An excellent Danish example of this tech- nique is the King’s Law, the Constitution of Danish absolute mon- archy, made during the reign of Frederik III in the 1660’s by Peder Schumacher, but not printed until 1709. Two kinds of bindings were made, one for royal persons and the intimates of the King and one for officials etc.

Fragment. Consisting of 12 orig. autographs, incl. Corfitz Ulfeldt and Leonora Christina. Cph 1641-1642. 8vo. In ad- dition to Ulfeldt and Leonora Christina the collection contains greetings from among others: Willich Westhovius (later principal at Herlufsholm), Barbara Wittrup (widow to cancellor Christen Krag on Kragerup), Hans Pouch (later priest in Ribe), Ludvig Pouch (later doctor in Ribe), Hans Mikkelsen (later bishop in Odense and sermon author), Jonas Hambræus (Swedish professor of Oriental languages at the University of Paris and Wichmann Hasebard (later bishop and former teacher for Leonora Christina). The leaves are octagonal and measure 13,5 + 11,5 cm. Collected in a newer, full leather binding in octagonal shape. The two leaves of Corfitz Ulfeldt and Leonora Christina have been removed from the collection for some years and “returned” in 2009 after FP bought them at auction (BR, 913/3009). Leonora Christina, Countess Ulfeldt, born Countess Leonora Christina Christiansdatter af Slesvig og Holsten (1621-1698), was the daughter of King Christian IV of Denmark and wife of Count Corfitz Ulfeldt (1606-1664). Both were important persons and had great power. After the death of King Christian IV in 1648, King Frederic III wanted to reduce the influence of the couple and he claimed Ulfeldt for treason. Ulfeldt fled the country together with Leonora to Sweden. Five years later, Leonora visited Denmark hoping that she and Ulfeldt could reconcile with King Frederic III but she was refused admission and expelled from the country. Hereafter, Leonora followed Corfitz Ulfeldt who fought with the Swedes and Karl X Gustav against Denmark.

In 1663 Ulfeldt was condemned to death in absentia by the Danish gouvernment because of treason, and Leonara Christine was accused of being a part of the crime. She denied all guilt but without trial she was imprisoned for the next 22 years in Copenhagen Castle's in- famous Blue Tower ("Blåtårn"). Here she wrote the posthumously published autobiography, "Jammersminde", written secretly during two decades of solitary confinement.

The quotation by Leonora Christine is of historical interest not least due to the fact that it is written before she knew of her sad fate. Also the quotation by Ulfelt is of particular interest seen in reltation to his fate. From other historical sources we know that Ulfelt often used the quotation "Tout le monde est une farce" and that he often added "... et se gouverne par opinions".
