But no scouting could predict just how close the Bruins’ No. 1 Seed: Arizona earned its sixth No. 75-71 win over the Wildcats would play out. 1 seed all-time, while it was the 15th No. The two squads combined for only 15 turnovers in a game that provided great drama from the opening tip. The Pac-12 has had considerable success in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), as five current members have captured the NIT crown - Colorado (1940), Utah (1947), UCLA (1985), Stanford (1991 and 2012) and California (1999). Colorado also finished second in 1991, as did Utah in 1974. Meanwhile third-place finishes were turned in by Oregon in 1975 and 2004, Colorado in 1955 and 2011, Utah in 1992, and Washington State in 2011. CALIFORNIA: The Golden Bears are making their eighth NIT appearance, and first since 2011. Cal won the NIT crown in 1999. . . The win over Utah Valley in the first round of NIT play was Cal’s 20th win of the season. It’s the fifth 20-win season for the Bears in the last six seasons, the 22nd 20-win season for coach Mike Montgomery in his 31-year career. All-Pac-12 senior G Justin Cobbs (15.7 ppg) has 518 assists in 100 career games and completed the regular season ranked second in the Pac-12 with 5.8 apg. He recently moved ahead of (1992-94) for fourth in school history in assists, and is three assists shy of matching Kevin Johnson’s total of 521 from 1984-87. His 5.2 apg career average ranks third at Cal. Cobbs is one of just three Golden Bears in school history to record at least 1,400 career points (1,442) and 500 career assists (518). . . The Bears finished in a five-way tie for third at 10-8. It was the 17th consecutive winning record posted by coach Mike Montgomery in league play (last 11 seasons at Stanford, six seasons at California).
