TheareaisborderedbyLosAngeles andcountiesonthewest,andontheeastbythestatesofand.Riverside covers 7,304 square miles while San Bernardino covers 20,106 square miles. The July 1, 2008 population oftheareatotaled4,167,000persons;anincreaseof913,000personssince2000.Thearea's populationcountwouldmakeitlargerthanPuertoRico,thestateofandtheSeattle-Tacoma- Bellevue,WAMSA. • Aquick demographicprofile ofthecountiesindicatesthatinRiverside,42.7%ofthepopulationis white non-Hispanic; 43.2% is Hispanic; 6.0% is black; and 5.3% is Asian-Pacific Islander. In San Bernardino,36.2%iswhitenon-Hispanic;46.8%isHispanic;8.4%isblack;and5.9%isAsian-Pacific Islander.Astoeducation,80%ofRiversideCounty'spopulationhasahighschooldiplomaorhigher, and 20% has a bachelor's degree or higher. For San Bernardino, the numbers are 77% and 18%, respectively.(AmericanCommunitySurvey2007) • Thereisadiverse economicbase intheInlandEmpire(basedontheconceptof"industryclusters”). Using2007averageemploymentasameasure,theleadingindustrieswere:1.)tourismwith96,600jobs; 2.)directinternationaltradewith90,400;3.)professional&businessservices55,600;4.)wholesaletrade &logisticswith48,900;and5.)healthservices&biomedicalwith37,500. • TheInlandEmpireisalsoagrowing center withemploymentatthe87,000markas of 2007. The largest components are: fabricated metal products with 15,700 jobs; automotive manufacturing with 14,600; food, beverages, and tobacco products with 10,600; plastic products with 9,500andfurniture&homefurnishingswith7,400. • The international trade aspectoftheInlandEmpire'seconomyisextensive.Theareaisamajor transportationhubforbothrailandtruckservice,hastheLA/OntarioInternational(aUPShub, bothsmallpackagesandairfreight,andforAsianservice),andisamajordistributioncenterforfirms movinggoodsthroughSouthern'sportstotherestoftheU.S. • This area has an impressive array of higher education facilities, including the University of California-Riverside,CalStateSanBernardino,UniversityofRedlands,andtheLomaLindaSchoolof Medicine.JusttothewestofthecountylineinL.A.aretheClaremontCollegegroupandCalPoly Pomona.Therearealsoseveralcommunitycolleges. • As noted above, the Inland Empire is a hub for transportation services in Southern California. There is the LA/Ontario International Airport, strategicfreewayaccess,tworaillines,andserviceby Amtrakand(3lines).Therearealsothreeex-militaryairfieldsthatarebeingredevelopedfor commercialuse:GeorgeAirForceBaseastheSouthernCaliforniaLogisticsAirport,NortonAFBasthe SanBernardinoInternationalAirport,andMarchAFBastheMarchInlandPort. • Thetwo-countyareahasadiverseportfolioof qualityoflife elements.Theseincludedesert resortswithchampionshipgolfcourses,andmountainresortsthatofferskiinginthewinter.The Coachella Valley has several Indian casinos. There are also fine and performing arts. The CaliforniaSpeedwayinFontanaisthelargestautoracetrackinSouthernCalifornia.
