† SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION † Second Sunday after Pentecost Baccalaureate Sunday June 6, 2021

PRELUDE Pastorale on a Celtic Alleluia Richard Proulx

INVOCATION and CONFESSION (Congregation rising ) P In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. P Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, let us first confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for us, and for His sake forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE Now Thank We All Our God Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices, who wondrous things has done, in whom His world rejoices; who from our mothers’ arms has blest us on our way with countless gifts of love and still is ours today.

All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given, the Son, and Him who reigns with them in highest heaven, the one eternal God, whom earth and heav’n adore; for thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

PRAYER OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And also with you.

P Let us pray: C Lord God, Your gracious presence attends Your people wherever they go. Govern our hearts and minds, that we live each day with steadfast faith in Jesus Christ, a cheerful hope in Your mercy, and a sincere love for You and one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING Genesis 3:8-15 8They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 He said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent tricked me, and I ate.” 14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals and among all wild creatures; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.” L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE 2 Corinthians 4:13 − 5:1 4 13 But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture − “I believed, and so I spoke” − we also believe, and so we speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. 15 Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. 16 So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. 17 For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, 18 because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal. 5 1For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

2 ALLELUIA VERSE (Congregation rising ) P Alleluia. These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. C I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I hope. Alleluia.

GOSPEL Mark 3:20-35 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 3rd chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord.

20 The crowd came together again, so that [Jesus and his disciples] could not even eat. 21 When [Jesus’] family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, “He has gone out of his mind.” 22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.” 23 And [Jesus] called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. 27 But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered. 28 Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin" − 30 for they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.” 31 Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.” 33 And he replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” 34 And looking at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm: Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

SERMON Rev. Scott Geminn

THE APOSTLES’ CREED (Congregation rising ) C I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

9 BACCALAUREATE AWARDS

The CAROL and CHRISTOPHER KINGHAN GIVING HEARTS Memorial Scholarship

Christopher Kinghan was born on March 16, 1988. He was baptized and confirmed at Village Lutheran Church and also attended The Chapel School. Christopher died unexpectedly on January 5, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Christopher’s life was characterized by joy and love towards others. His mother, Carol, and the Kinghan family established the Heart of Giving Scholarship to remember Christopher’s legacy and to encourage a deserving student entering The Chapel School 6th grade who exemplifies Christopher’s love of giving and helping others. On July 31, 2014, after a long battle with cancer, Carol too passed away. Her family grieved her loss but celebrated her awesome life and the eternal life that she now shares with her son, Chris, and all the faithful departed. To remember both Carol and Chris and their joyful hearts, the Scholarship has been permanently renamed The Carol and Christopher Kinghan GIVING HEARTS Memorial Scholarship . The scholarship both honors the memory of the dearly loved mother and son and recognizes the recipients who demonstrate joyful hearts in their generation through their Chapel School education and lives of service to the world.

The LIBRARIAN SHARON PETERSON Literacy Scholarship

Sharon Peterson Finster is a commissioned church worker in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. She began serving as The Chapel School Librarian in 1980 and retired in June 2016. This scholarship was established by her family in celebration of her life’s work and as a lasting legacy of the ministry of both Sharon and her late husband, Rev. Dr. Cliff Peterson. The scholarship is given to a deserving student who excels in reading and literacy.

10 THE SYDNEI McKNIGHT Upstander & Ally Scholarship

Sydnei McKnight is a proud member of The Chapel School’s Class of 2021. Sydnei and her family established this scholarship to encourage young people to stand up for others in the face of injustice and adversity. A deserving student who exemplifies these qualities will receive a $500 award for each year they attend The Chapel Middle School. In Sydnei’s words, “Making a difference is not always easy. Throughout my life, I battled with finding my place and fitting in. It often made me question who my true friends are and who I want to be. As a member of my generation, I believe it’s important to be an Ally and Upstander. It is important to choose yourself, but it is also important to ‘choose people who choose you’.”

The Blue Ribbon Foundation To add your gift of support for one of these scholarships, make a check or money order payable to “Blue Ribbon Foundation” and send to: Blue Ribbon Foundation, 172 White Plains Rd., Bronxville, NY 10708.
