PART 2 safety measures for visiting in your homes. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you. Last month we featured the first article about ‘Daredevil’ Jack Cooper of Ibstock who (previously Kornerstone Legal Services) was one of the founding soldiers in the Special Air service (SAS). Formed in the Second World War to attack German airfields in North Africa they proved to be a huge success and were soon being sent on other daring missions. Jack served under the formidable Paddy Mayne who had taken command of the regiment after the founder, Lieutenant Colonal Protecting Your David Stirling had been captured in Tunisia. Mayne had simply told Jack, “I want you to make every bullet count”. Our previous article dealt with Jack’s initial training and in Family Inheritance part 2 Jack recalls one of his exciting raids... The Raid on Cape Murro di Porco, near Syracuse, Sicily, July 1943 The Ulster Monarch took on landing craft in North Africa in preparation for a 2am landing in Sicily on 10th July. The vessel made for the ancient port of Syracuse. In the briefing room each man was individually interviewed and gave his opinion on the aerial photos, beach, gun placement and barbed wire. An amplifier went off and the ship was darkened in preparation for us nearing the dispatching point. A young American serving in the Royal Navy, shook my hand and wished me “Best of luck, Busty!”. We had packed Tommy Guns, fuse and time pencils into the six landing crafts. There were twenty men in each and we headed off into the darkness. It was hard to see where we were heading but I could see flashes overhead from our boys in the skies, who were dropping bombs to ensure the Italians kept their heads down, destroying defences and also, keep the enemy focus away from us. As we closed in on the shoreline, the raging fires had shown the RAF had done a good job. Our craft steered into a small creek, everyone silent, no talking at all. Instead, we signaled each other by ‘taps’ and I followed the others up a cliff, which was blocked by barbed wire. The first chap had wire cutters, so we all got through and spread out onto our stomachs, listening to the large Italian guns. There were six guns in all and one dummy, and they needed to put out of action. We placed four second, ready-primed grenades and then crawled about 10 feet from the perimeter of the gun emplacement. Dawn was breaking and we could see the guns were about 15 feet deep and fired mechanically. Thank heavens those guns were not used against our men because there would have been no survivors. The guns were put out of action by the Royal Engineer Sergeants who ‘blew their breeches’. The Italians emerged with their hands up, tired, dirty and disheveled. There had been 300 of them against just 20 S.A.S! We wirelessed back to Monty’ that the guns had been taken. He replied back with, ‘Without your cooperation, the Navy could not have got in. I have another job for you!’ If you are OVER 60 it NEXT ISSUE.... Monumental stones weighing in excess of 1650 tons, precisely On 27th June 1885, the Gentleman’s caravan and entourage set out from for Ashby de la Zouch. Dr. Gordon Stables cut and placed in huge building complexes, with no explanation of how they were constructed. Just search for ‘Polygonal Masonry’ and you will Passing through Fenny Drayton and Sibson, Stables takes up the tale: “Ashby lies above us and before us at find a building technique that is found on every corner of the planet, from Easter Island to Peru. Now we come to the underwater cities that last, and strangely picturesque it looks. Rows of queer-shaped trees are on each side of us; up yonder, in front, is a hide under our seas, waiting patiently for us to investigate. The sunken mega structure at Yonaguni, Japan is simply unreal. It appears to be a graveyard on a braeland; farther to the right a tall church spire, and flanking all, and peeping through the greenery huge pyramid structure that is awash with pottery and ancient artifacts, that barely anyone knows about. You can swim between avenues and of trees, is the ruined castle. Market-day in Ashby, and we are mobbed whenever we stop to do some shopping. The huge pillars, marveling at the craftsmanship. In the Bay and Cambay, 25 miles off the west coast of India, a monumental city has been unearthed church here is well worthy of a visit, so too is the castle, but tourists ought to refresh their minds before spending the size of Manhattan with massive walls and plazas. Again, in India, the fabled city of Dwarka, that according to legend, was ruled by the Hindu a few days here by once more reading Ivanhoe. It was hard, uphill work from Ashby; drag, drag, drag: horses tired, God, Krishna, was discovered and is now an important archaeological site. These are not the only examples; we have multiple underwater Peablossom limping, and all weary. At the hill-top we came into quite a Highland country, and thence we could catch prehistorical sites in the Caribbean, North Africa, Italy and all over the world. glimpses of lovely scenery and far-off blue hills. The effects of the sunlight on the green oak woods and the yellow ashes was very charming. LOUNT at last; a humble inn, quiet, kindly people, and a little meadow. How quiet and Why are these finds so important? It means these cities were around at the end of the last ice age, when the ice caps melted. This caused sea still it is! And above the green of fields and woods is a blue, blue sunny sky. I had the caravan half-filled this morning levels to rise, resulting in the loss of these jewels to Poseidon for thousands of years. Maybe this was the great flood talked about in every with bright-eyed, wondering children. A parent brought me a red cotton handkerchief. “T’missus,” he explained, world-wide culture? So, when one asks the conventional experts ‘why are cities that are at least 10,000 years old underwater, when we are “was makin’ oop a pie, and I thought upon thee loike.” What a lovely area; what lovely people. Now as then! taught that human civilisation only really began 5000 years ago at the earliest?’, they start to stammer and scratch their heads. In conclusion, ‘The Wanderer’, with Dr. Stables Kenneth Hillier (Ashby Museum) if these underwater cities were around at the end of the Ice Age, then why not the sites at Giza, Teotihuacan, Lake Titicaca, Machu Picchu, (right) and Hurricane Bob Baalbek and many more? They built the same type of structures, using the same building techniques and worshiped Gods with identical stories of origin. If this is true, then what happened to all these cities? What happened to the people who lived in them? How advanced was this culture? These are questions for another day. YOUR MUSEUM NEEDS YOU! Ashby Museum is looking for volunteers.
