The Island Plan has been an insurmountable hurdle for the present application, but is the plan itself fit for purpose? The Island Plan expires in 2020 and is due for review. Its provision for new affordable homes - 1,000 over a seven year period - seems to have been exceedingly conservative given that the island’s population is rising at around 1,000 a year and has been doing so for decades. To date there is no hard evidence that the Island Plan figure is out of kilter with demand, but work is in hand by a government group called the Strategic Housing Unit to determine current and future need. The findings are due within the next few months. There are currently 1,022 applicants for affordable housing in Jersey and it appears that a quarter of them have strong

fertilizers. Increased levels of water demand could also impact on recharge rates. Freshwater resources Water near the coast can also face risks from sea level rise, Honary Policematters under threat since as the sea rises, saltwater moves into freshwater areas. BY JOHN CAMARA In the latest report on food sustainability in Jersey, published in March, Dr Steve Webster looks at the impact of farming practices on our water and the BELOW: cost burden it places on the public. Constable’s Officer, Most of Jersey’s precipitation is as rainfall during the winter months, and Sally Camara (left) it is during these months that the aquifers fill. A large proportion of rainfall is and Vingtenier ‘lost’ through evapotranspiration, the remainder can be partitioned into Marion Romeril streamflow and infiltration. Infiltration, moves down to the water table and this water table flows, by gravity, to emerge as spring-water or to discharge into the sea. It is this infiltrated water that is pumped as groundwater from the boreholes used for both agricultural and domestic purposes; and it is this system that serves as a natural reservoir. In successive dry years groundwater becomes depleted. Following dry winters the conservation and careful use of water through summer months is therefore critical. Jersey has six impounding reservoirs which, when full, provide approximately 2.6 Mm3 of water or 120 days of supply to the Island. The pollution of water, e.g. through nitrate leaching and by other means, affects both groundwater and streamflow, both of which will enter these reservoirs. It is recognised that the inappropriate use of fertilisers can lead to the pollution of the Island’s drinking waters, resulting in increased costs and disruption of these supplies. Jersey data on the relationship between surface water and groundwater nitrate levels demonstrates the clear linkage between excessive fertiliser application and the consequences for water quality. In effect this fertiliser is paid for twice - once by the farmer so that it can be applied and once by Jersey Water so that it can be removed. The Water Management Plan for Jersey (2016) highlights agriculture as a principal source of diffuse nitrate and phosphate pollution on the Island, leading to significant additional treatment costs and threatening the Brownies and the St Peter’s availability of good quality, potable water. Since 2009 the Department of the Environment has been working with farmers through the Diffuse Pollution Honorary Police Project to constrain fertilizer application and measure d levels of nitrate are now reported to be reducing. Les Jeunes Fun carrot workshop getting ready for competition The Jersey Association of the National Vegetable Society was very fortunate this year to have the use of the member’s room at the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society in Trinity for their annual fun carrot workshop.

The final competition will be held at the RJA&HS on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th of August. The workshop was held on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th of April with 20 adults and 30 children taking part. Every entrant was given a 30 litre plastic pot filled with compost which they purchased. The carrot seed was kindly sponsored by Marshalls Seeds (who also will be sponsoring the prize seed vouchers later in the year). As the pots had already been topped up with compost and handed out, Mark Day supervised the workshop by instructing the entrants to make 10 indentations with their fingers about 1cm deep and place four carrot seeds in the middle of each station which were then covered lightly. The pots were then taken home where they will be watered gently without washing the seed away. Every child who enters the fun carrot competition will be presented with a rosette

I still have friends who attended school with me. At that time the school consisted of the Granite building which is still there today which held the classrooms for Reception Year and Year 1. In Year 2 we moved to the Ex German Army wooden huts which contained the rest of the classrooms. I recall they were a little cold and there were some holes in the floors. The only heating in winter was a cast iron coal fire which was immediately adjacent to the teacher. At the age of 11 I moved to Victoria College where I co mpleted my GCSE O and A levels. When I left school I joined Midland Trust Company, now part of HSBC. This was to be the start of a 40 year career in the Finance Industry. Tell us about your family?
