PRESIDENTS REPORT

It is with great pleasure I present to you the Rowing NSW 2016-2017 Annual Report.

This has been a very strong year for Rowing in NSW and we are very proud of our athletes and coaches and all their achievements.

These results are made possible by the strong foundation our Sport has from the involvement at the School level, support and guidance provided by the Coaches and Clubs, the volunteers that help organise and run the regattas so efficiently and enthusiastically, our NSW Rowing Executive and Board and not least our relationship with Rowing Australia and NSW Institute of Sport. It is the commitment and teamwork of such a large group of people to the growth and success of rowing not just in NSW but in Australia and competing on the world stage that allows our athletes to achieve their best.

Rowing is a unique sport in that it allows so many people to participate – as an individual, as part of a team, whether able or disabled, lightweight or heavy, male and female, young or a master of the sport - for recreation or across many levels of competition. Rowing NSW values the contribution every rower provides and is committed to support and represent all members.

One element of the strategy is our partnership with Rowing Australia and the NSW Institute of Sport focusing on the development of the elite rowing program as a part of achieving our vision to be Australia’s leading rowing State.

Hancock Prospecting Women’s National Training Centre

In 2016 Rowing NSW was awarded the contract to develop the Women’s National Training Centre on the Nepean River at Penrith. The river provides a 14 km stretch of protected waters to row on surrounded by majestic and inspiring scenery. This is a joint venture between Rowing NSW, Rowing Australia and NSW Institute of Sport which is currently under construction. We would like to thank QOH Architects, in particular Terry O’Hanlon (recently awarded Life Membership of Rowing NSW), and SuperShed who are undertaking the construction. Penrith City Council have been a great support to the project as has the Nepean Rowing Club and Penrith Rowing Club which are located next to the new facility. Construction is on track and we expect the facility to be completed before the end of 2017. Located near the International Regatta Centre this provides our women athletes a world class training venue as they prepare for the World Championships and the Tokyo Olympics. National Pathways Program

The Rowing Australia’s National Pathways Plan 2020+ is a national high performance system that works in partnership to deliver consistent and sustainable podium results for Australia athletes at the Olympic and and World Championships known as the Australia’s Winning Edge (AWE). The vision is for Australia to be the world’s number one rowing nation and Australia’s leading Olympic sport.

NSW Rowing is building an elite rowing program to identify and develop rowers who have the potential to be selected for the national training centres and achieve podium results at benchmark events.

The program will principally be through 4 performance pathway clubs; Sydney University Boat Club, University of Technology, and Mosman Rowing Club. These clubs have the coaching resources, equipment and management capability to deliver the outcomes of the program. Where an athlete is participating in the program but not from one of these 4 clubs, their home club with the assistance of NSWIS and Rowing NSW will provide support.

2017 Pathways 8+ Program

A critical focus of Rowing NSW is occupational health and safety and ensuring that all athletes are subject to best practice. Rowing NSW details all our OH&S policies on the website and these are reviewed and updated when required. This year the Heat Management Plan has been under review after unpredictable conditions were experienced at the International Regatta Centre during the State Championships.

I would personally like to thank Tony Blower and his team for the work they do in running such an efficient organisation and the Board of directors for their support in all the endeavours of the rowing organisation.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS REPORT

Rowing NSW had another strong year in 2016-2017 both on and off the water.

Following on from the 2015 review of our Strategic Plan we have continued to review and refine the Plan with an aim of maintaining an alignment with the goals and objectives of Rowing Australia.

This alignment has also been a focus as we continue to improve our governance and ensure consistency with the Whole of Sport Plan of Rowing Australia.

This year saw a satisfactory financial performance with Rowing NSW delivering a $38,945 profit for the 12 months to 30 June 2017.

The balance sheet remains strong which allows us the luxury of being able to take advantage of opportunities that present themselves or to confront any obstacles that arise. This has provided us with the opportunity to assist in the development of a National Training Centre for Women at Penrith.

Once again, this year, as well as our commitment to regattas and development of our juniors we have focused on growing Para Rowing in the state. This has manifested itself not only in the programming of regatta events but also in the acquisition of equipment. Rowing NSW has purchased a rowing barge suitable for introducing para rowers to the sport. We are grateful to the State Office of Sport for their grant of $50,000 that helped our drive to expand our reach in this important area.

This focus on para rowing was also reflected at the National and King and Queens Cup regattas. Rowing NSW won the Bob Blake Para Shield for the best performing state at the Nationals as well as winning the female para rowing event and placing in the men’s event at the interstate regatta.

Our great year on the water was reflected in our performance at the Interstate Regatta, were we won the Rowing Australia Cup for the best performing state as well as winning the Kings Cup and coming second in the Queens Cup. All our interstate crews, but one had podium finishes and our men’s youth eight continues to impress.

Our clubs performed with distinction at the National Championship regatta. Sydney Rowing Club being the best performing club at the regatta with Sydney University Boat Club and UTS coming second and third respectively. This is a reflection of the level of achievement within the state.

Rowing NSW is in the process of an organisational restructure with the aim of refocusing on our efforts to be a lower cost client focused organisation. Not with standing this the level of professionalism and service by the staff of Rowing NSW has been exemplary. We have this year decided to outsource our accounting and booking functions to Bentleys and are working closely with them to reduce our costs.

In addition to these changes in outsourcing we have also made a change in accounting package to align directly with Rowing Australia. This is a direct reflection of our commitment to shared behaviours under a federated model of the sport.

Our Sponsors and Supporters have again proved loyal and committed. Bentleys have signed on for a new term and increased commitment. The introduction of Bentleys to the Rowing fraternity has also been a bonus for other states, with Bentleys looking to expand their relations in other territories.

12

We have signed a sponsorship arrangement with our long-term insurance partner V-Insurance. We are delighted to further the insurance needs of the Association with our long-term partner.

Rowing NSW successfully tendered for the development of the National Training Centre for Women to be located in the NSW at the Nepean River, Penrith. We are delighted that Rowing Australia has decided to partner with us and NSWIS to build a world class facility on what is arguably the best continuous training venue in the country. It is envisaged the NTC will be completed in the middle to end of 2017. The location of the world class Sydney International Regatta Centre situated just minutes away for the NTC provides our women athletes with a wonderful opportunity to train as they prepare for the Tokyo Olympics and beyond.

We believe that having the NTC in Penrith will be a great benefit to our rowers at all levels as the best female athletes in the Country grace our waterways and regattas.

We look forward to next year as we focus on winning the Kings Cup, the Queens Cup, the Para Rowing Shield and the Rowing Australia Cup as well as continuing to bring the joys of our sport to all in NSW.

FINANCE REPORT

Rowing NSW reported a satisfactory profit of $38,944 for the twelve months to 30 June 2017. This compares with a deficit of $23,301 for the corresponding period last financial year.

The improved financial performance is on the back of the cost cutting measures that we undertook both last year and this. And it is pleasing that some of these initiatives are starting to realise some benefit.

Revenue this year was $1,814,867 compared with the 2015/16 year of $1,343,264. The vast majority of this increased revenue is attributable to funding we received for the construction of the National Training Centre at Penrith. In addition to the $250,000 grant from the state government, we alluded to last year, both NSWIS and Rowing Australia are committed to funding the NTC together with a $100,000 commitment for Rowing NSW.

The board, in consultation with the Auditors and our accountant Bentleys, have taken the conservative approach of writing down the value of the NTC in the books of Rowing NSW to reflect the license we have granted to Rowing Australia to occupy the facility for the next 20 years. After this term, the asset will revert to Rowing NSW.

As a result of this write down the Balance sheet as at 30 June 2017 shows Total Members Accumulated Funds of $623,093. This compares with the previous year of $584,149 and reflects our improved profit performance. Total Assets stood at $803,474 and Cash and Cash Equivalents stood at $348,174. Surplus cash is held at interest with St George Bank.

The Balance Sheet remains very strong and completely ungeared. We have comfort that we can take advantage of opportunities, like the NTC, or meet unexpected events as they arise.

The implementation of the outsourcing of our accounting requirements to Bentleys has now bedded down and is working well. The board is furnished with monthly accounts and comparison to budget on a monthly and year to date basis.

This year also saw us move to a cloud based accounting package. We have adopted the same package as Rowing Australia to align with our commitment to shared behaviours under the federated model in which we operate. We will be looking next year to move to the same Chart of Accounts as Rowing Australia in order to complete our transition.

Looking forward we are striving to be a low-cost provider and are looking to stabilise both membership and seat fees.

REGATTA OPERATIONS REPORT

The NSW State Championships were held in very hot conditions at SIRC in February. This regatta was again used as a selection regatta for Rowing Australia resulting in very strong fields in senior small boat events. The decision was made to cancel Under 16 and Under 17 events and to also cancel school events scheduled for after the luncheon break as a means for limiting exposure to heat for the most vulnerable age categories. The board is currently undertaking a review of the Heat Policy.

The introduction of Under 21 Twilight Regattas failed as an initiative. The first two regattas only received one entry in each regatta – from UTS Rowing Club – and were cancelled earlier in the week. Consequently, the remaining 3 regattas were cancelled prior to entries opening. Thank you to UTS for their support in getting behind the series.

The Lane Cove Head was a new regatta aimed at promoting the role of a coxswain as well as . Conducted on a winding course of over 6km on the Lane Cove River in coxed fours and eights, the regatta received good support from elite through to masters for an inaugural event and included members of the NSW Queen’s Cup squad getting some early season kilometres in together. The support of St Ignatius College in allowing us use of their numerous coaching boats as marshalling boats was greatly appreciated. Likewise the experience and expertise of Alan Bennett in setting up the course played an instrumental part in the success of the regatta. While boating access to the Lane Cove River is limited, we are hoping that this event will grow in the future while still being looked at as a fun event on the regatta calendar on a stretch of water with many turns.

The NSW Combined High Schools Rowing Championships were held on the Grafton Rowing Club course, hosted by Grafton High School. It was the first of 3 times over a six year period that the regatta will be held on the Clarence River as part of a sponsorship arrangement with Clarence Valley Council.

Canada Bay Council had kindly offered to cover approximately half of the cost of portable toilets for the 4 regattas hosted from Rodd Point. The prior season close to the full cost was covered and for 2017- 2018 no funds will be made available as the contribution has been phased out. We thank them for their financial assistance towards these costs and I’m hopeful that we can work with them in the future on a long term infrastructure that provides benefits to ratepayers and the local community as well as a solution for our sport.

Overall, number of seats raced for the season showed a small increase, less than 1%. Strong growth occurred in regional regattas (an increase of 13%) on the back of large entry increases at Henley on Hunter and the Taree Summer Regatta. Schoolgirl regattas also showed a modest increase of approximately 6% in seats raced. Double header weekends for schoolgirls received strong entries, with the Loreto Normanhurst and Loreto Kirribilli weekend surpassing the 2015 seats raced, even after having to remove Schoolboy events from the Loreto Normanhurst regatta in order to accommodate the Australian Ballet performance of Swan Lake at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. An increase in seats raced of approximately 10% also occurred at the PLC/Kings/Rowing NSW and IGSSA weekend.

The support, knowledge and expertise of our volunteer base are crucial to staging the large number of regattas throughout the season. I would like to thank our boat race officials, boat drivers, marshalls, boat holders, time keepers and bow number volunteers very much for the great service that they provide the sport and the good natured manner in which they do so. 15

Rowing NSW farewelled staff members Brett Morley and during the season. Their initiative, hard work, planning skills and general good demeanour will be missed and we wish them the very best for the future and thank them for their efforts. Reduced staffing during the long recruitment phase for their replacements meant that the remaining staff were very stretched throughout the busiest part of the season and we are hopeful that we can better service the membership now that normal staffing levels have returned. We apologise for the inconvenience and slow responses during the recruitment period.

2017 INTERSTATE REGATTA REPORT

Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith (SIRC)

The Sydney International Rowing Regatta (SIRR2017) again combined the Australian National Championships, National Schools Championships and the Interstate regatta. This event attracted a large contingent from Hong Kong/China, scullers from Vanuatu and Para rowers from both nations. It was a selection requirement for both U21 and U23 nominees as senior trials had already been completed. The selected senior athletes were released to compete for their clubs.

The Lead Coaches for the 2017 team were appointed mid-November with the Assistant Coaches being named early December. Training squads were announced at the beginning of December based on squad eligibility and results from time trials and ergo tests.

With athletes now being located at the NTC’s (men – Canberra; women – Nepean) training in both the King’s cup (KC) and Queen’s Cup (QC) boats proved difficult. The QC girls from last year banded together and started training early with an eye on competing at the Head of the Yarra, which gave them a goal to aim for and to commit to the boat.

With time away from the NTC’s over the Christmas period, both the KC and QC crews were able to train. At this stage, both KC and QC were still squads and the final week leading into Nationals saw the crews finalised, allowing them to train as a crew.

With this being the second year of Para events, as the leading Para state we were keen to retain these titles. Even though both Kate and Kevin have not been as active this season, their performance at the State Championships saw them selected to these positions again.

Selection for each boat was specific to each crew. The Youth Women’s crew did not trial due to a small number of the required caliber and the men’s Youth crew trialed based on the results from the Small Boat regatta the previous day.

The results from the State Championships ranked both the lightweight men and women, although in the men’s race one of the competitors was washed off by the umpire and this was reflected with a letter from the Lead coach being submitted to the Selectors with his recommendations.

The QC crew was named with the assumption that if you are at an NTC, you would be higher up the pecking order than a club based athlete. However, this was not the same for the KC crew where an NTC athlete was named as a reserve with a club member being selected.

The winning / first placed NSW scullers from the State Championships were selected into their relative event (LTAW1x; LTAM1x; W1x; M1x). This year the Para 1x events were part of the points score towards the Australia Cup, so it really was an overall team effort.

17

Crew – LTA W1x Coach

Kathleen Murdoch (Nepean RC) Lindsay Callaghan (NRC) 1st NSW 2nd TAS 3rd ACT Murdoch Jago Ross

After Rio, Kate has taken some time out, but is still the leading LTA sculler in NSW. Her focus for 2017 was to retain the title she won last year and she did this in superb fashion. Leading from the first stroke, the result was never in doubt and Kate records back to back wins in this event.

Crew – LTA M1x Coach

Kevin du Toit (UTS) John Smyth (UTS) 1st QLD 2nd NSW 3rd WA 4th TAS 5th VIC 6th ACT Russell du Toit Wall Chong Skinner Cooper

Kevin has again been the leading NSW LTA male sculler this season and his result in the State Championships guaranteed his selection as the NSW representative. Having been sick earlier in the regatta, Kevin was in doubt whether he would be fit enough to compete in the Interstate race. Saving his reserves coming off the start, Kevin was in the middle of the pack before working his way through to 2nd position going through the halfway mark. The leading sculler from Queensland had established an unassailable lead by this stage. Towards the closing stage, the WA sculler (Wall, from Balmain RC) mounted a massive attack, moving from 5th to 3rd position but Kevin was able to hold onto his second position.

Crew – Nell Slater Trophy Coach

Genevieve Horton (SUBC) Alfie Young (SUBC) 1st QLD 2nd SA 3rd NSW 4th TAS 5th VIC 6th WA Edmunds Aldersey Horton Nesbitt Bateman Hagan

As the top ranked NSW sculler at the State Championships, Gen took on the task this year. Off the start, the SA sculler came out hard, leaving QLD and NSW in a tight tussle through the 500m mark. As QLD then started to draw away and catching the SA, this saw QLD and SA being locked together through the 1500m. At this stage, Gen consolidated her 3rd position, knowing that she had to back up in the QC within a short time frame. This is the first time NSW have medaled in this boat class since 2008 (Z Uphill).

Crew – Presidents Cup Coach

Cameron Girdlestone (SUBC) Don McLachlan (SUBC) 1st NSW 2nd ACT 3rd TAS 4th QLD 5th WA 6th VIC 7th SA Girdlestone Letcher Mure Moore Hayes Smith McRea- SCR

18

The race of the regatta at the NSW State Championships was the final of the men’s single scull where Cam dead heated with fellow Olympian . This earned Cam the right to represent NSW in the Presidents Cup, which he last did in 2010, finishing in 7th position. Wanting to redeem himself after his performance in the M1x at SIRR, he refocused and worked on the basics. This worked as he led from the first stroke and continued to move away from his competitors at each mark to win by nearly six seconds. This was a very impressive performance by Cam and we look forward to seeing him race at Henley Royal Regatta later this year.

Crew – Victoria Cup Coach

Georgia Miansarow (SUBC); Sophie Jerapetritis (UTS); Georgia David Gely (UTS) Masters (UTS); Rosie Beasley (UTS) Hally Chapman (St Catherine’s) 1st QLD 2nd VIC 3rd NSW 4th SA 5th WA

For the last twelve years, Tasmania have finished amongst the medals in this event, however, this year they did not have an entry. Having been withdrawn from racing earlier on in the week due to sickness, Georgia Miansarow was in doubt of starting this race, but having been deemed fit to start, she moved back into her seat. QLD led from the start leaving VIC, NSW and SA to sort out the remaining medals. By halfway, the order had been established with VIC in 2nd and NSW 3rd and the margins gradually opening over the second half of the course.

Crew – Penrith Cup Coach

James Chuter (UTS); Jack Hanley (SUBC); Sean Murphy Tim McLaren (UTS) (MRC); Matt Curtin (UTS) Lachlan Carter (SRC) 1st WA 2nd QLD 3rd NSW 4th VIC 5th TAS 6th SA

This event has been dominated by QLD for the last 4 years and the way the race started it looked like it again this year. The NSW crew retained two from last year, along with Matt from the YM8+ and Sean returning from a long-term illness. Although they had trained together as a crew/squad, they hadn’t raced during the season as they did last year. Not having the best of starts, they were spinning the wheels for too long before they found their rhythm which had them going through the halfway mark in fourth position. Having settled down, they worked their way up in to third and in the last 250m realizing how close they were to VIC, they started to sprint. However, it was too late and VIC managed to maintain 2nd place by 0.62sec. They are getting closer, so it is just a matter of time.

Crew – Bicentennial Cup Coach

Dyone Bettga (SUBC); Olivia Bartram (UTS); Grace Reid UTS); Judith Ungemach (MRC) Lara Wainwright (UTS); Adelaide Scott (UTS); Georgia Bradley Lachlan Allen (LK) (SRC); Grace Galloway (MRC); Lauren Lyon (SRC); cox Talia Barnet-Hepples (Queenwood); Kate O’Gorman (UTS)

1st VIC 2nd QLD 3rd WA 4th NSW 5th SA 6th TAS

19

This crew retained half from last year’s boat and was joined by new members who had performed well during the year. Training had been good and positive, but it was felt that the crew had been selected too early – the results had been clear cut at the SBR, but this was different at the State Championships. It had been hoped for a top three position, they felt they had rowed well, but ran out of gas coming in fourth – possibly too many prior races?

This squad trained more in the boat this year than previously, having both good and bad sessions. The group stepped up however when they got to train with the KC crew, making for a good productive weekends training. The race plan was pretty simple – get out in front and keep moving away, which is exactly what they did. Having a fast-dynamic start, they led by over a length at 500m and continued to move away to extend this by over 2 lengths at 1500m and enjoyed the run to the finish. This was the third consecutive win in this event and shows the strength in depth at this level.

Having taken responsibility for this squad last year, the girls again drove this project to get back to the top of the podium. Having started early in the season and racing in the NSWIS TT’s and Head of Yarra, the crew had developed some combination. When the NTC girls became unavailable, the crew continued to train as a squad in either 8+ or 4-. However, once they were released at Christmas they conducted a two-day camp at Nepean and developed some much needed combination. The crew did not row again until the Nationals and due to continued illness, Jessie had to be subbed out of the boat, being replaced by Elizabeth Halsall. Off the start, the girls powered away to an impressive lead of 3.5sec by 500m. However, they got too excited and instead of settling went for too much resulting in this lead being whittled down to 2.9sec at 1000m and 1.5sec at 1500m. At this stage they were struggling to hang on and it was only a matter of time before they were overhauled by the VICs. It was a brave effort on their part from some young athletes, who hopefully will have learnt a lot from the campaign and be ready for it again next year.

With six of the crew being based in Canberra, it was always going to be difficult getting out on the water and not much could be done about it. Having a camp based out of Sydney RC over the New Year certainly helped followed by another based on the Nepean just before the Nationals to finalise the crew. Having one side considerably stronger than the other was challenging, but enjoyable and it all worked out well in the end. Going into the race, it was felt that a strong challenge would come from both VIC and SA, so motivating the crew wasn’t difficult as everyone was up for the challenge. Being relentless off the start, they had opened a lead of over 2sec and 3sec at 500m over VIC and SA; this moved out to over 3sec and 6sec at the 1000m and further increasing at the 1500m to run in clear winners by 2.45sec and 5.52sec. The crew contained three previous KC members with the other six being first timers. This looks good for the future

Summary

Winning four golds; 2 silver and 3 bronze secured the Australia Cup for the first time since 2013. Post-Olympic year always has a few retirements and so trying to field strong combinations in the KC and QC can sometimes be difficult, however, those that did step up managed to do so in fine form. Every win was by a comfortable margin (LTAW1x – 30sec; M1x – 5.83sec; YM8+ - 5.59sec; M8+ - 2.45sec). The Lightweight boys have made it onto the podium for the last three years now and it is a small but steady group coming through. For the Lightweight women, not having the likes of Sarah Pound or Laura Dunn, who have been the mainstays for many years seriously weakened this group, but they did a good job of managing to get back onto the podium again. The Youth men have been in the medals for the last eight years with the last three being at the top. This shows great strength in depth for this group and everyone wants to be in it, which does tend to weaken the lightweight four, because they would target this boat over the four. Unfortunately, our Youth women are lacking at the moment and haven’t medaled since 2014. As individuals they produce some reasonable results in their small boats, but this is not transferred into the bigger boat. It has been suggested that selection in a pair is weighted higher than the single scull, however, this may then lead to better athletes not being selected as a result of this. All of our single scullers have continued to impress – Kate is so dominant in her event, that even when she has missed a lot of time out of the boat due to injury she wins comfortably. Kevin also hasn’t been as active in the boat this year but is managing to stay in front of his NSW rivals. Gen is continuing to develop as a high performer and Cam is going from strength to strength with the confidence gained from medaling in Rio last year. The confidence and belief that is starting to emanate from the QC girls will see them in winning ways again soon. With over half of the KC crew being new to the scene this year is promising for the future.

21

In both cases, we need our youth crews to be strong to continue feeding athletes upwards into these squads. Putting together a State Team is not possible without the co-operation of all clubs and their coaches working together to provide training venues, racing boats and equipment for all the crews. This is something NSW does well, and it underpins our continuing success at both state and national level.

Thanks must also be given to the RNSW Selectors, club and RNSW/NSWIS officials for ensuring that everything was done to get the best possible crews to the start line.

MASTERS REPORT

Masters Rowers from NSW had a very full season of racing starting with 30 Masters eights preparing for the Head of the Yarra by competing in the local lead up Head races, and winning three HofY divisions.

Masters Rowers continued to make a strong contribution to the full Metropolitan and Regional Regatta season of Age and Grade regattas.

The Masters Shield for 2016-17 was won by after a great Club effort, having run third in the last three years. Second place was taken by Mosman who were separated by only one point from Leichhardt in third.

Sadly, during last season, New South Wales rowing lost a great competitor and supporter of Masters racing in Alan Pollock of St George Rowing Club.

In April, a large contingent of NSW Masters competed at , NZ in perfect conditions for the World Masters Games, where Australian Rowers made up 39% of all Competitors, and came home with the second highest medal tally, after New Zealand.

The State Masters Championships, held one week later, suffered as a result with a lower entry level, but the standard of racing remained high, with excellent results from North Shore and Mosman in particular.

The Australian Masters Championships were held at Nagambie, Victoria in (amazingly) perfect conditions, but similarly suffered from low competitor numbers. The racing, however, was fiercely competitive, particularly in the Interstate events, where the NSW representative crews performed brilliantly, with all crews medaling. The NSW Mens eight (all Mosman RC) won for the first time, with the Mens quad (all Glebe RC) and Womens eight getting silver and the Womens Quad the bronze medal.

PARA ROWING REPORT

Coming in to a Paralympic year sees athletes lift and excel. NSW para athletes did not disappoint and 50% of the Rio Paralympic rowers were from NSW.

Rio Paralympics 2016

After challenging training and a difficult preparation, NSW athletes acquitted themselves with the professionalism, determination and character that NSW is famous for, not letting off the water decisions or fatigue affect them in the slightest, except to motivate them for the next 4 years. The results for NSW - Congratulations to [SydneyRC/NSWIS] silver in the AS M1x [PR1]. The LTA4+ [ PR3] event was hotly contested and Australia won the B Final. The NSW members of that crew were Jeremy McGrath [Balmain RC/NSWIS], Kate Murdoch [Nepean RC/NSWIS], cox Jo Burnand [Mosman/NSWIS].

Erik Horrie Photos: Rowing Australia

Head of The Yarra

NSW was well represented at the inaugural Para 8+ event at the prestigious Head of the Yarra with 7 athletes over two crews, all of whom came from the Balmain Rowing Club. Four were chosen for the mixed crew while the other three were in the all-male crew. A fine win in the para event and an excellent time for the para crew in the non para event. Both crews organised and coached by Liam James [Balmain RC]

Nationals

The Nationals were once again held at SIRC and this year the weather was perfect for competition. In the AS M1x [PR1] Erik Horrie put in a sterling performance and was rewarded with a well earned Gold Medal. He then backed up on the same day in a higher category and was unlucky to be pipped by a dual gold medallist and won silver in the TA [PR2]. Caitlin Lisle [Balmain RC], following Eric’s lead, also raced up a category, which didn’t faze her and she brought home silver in her first attempt at racing in the TA [PR2]. She’s one to watch next season when she races in her correct category AS [PR1].

In the LTA [PR3] NSW again led from the front with Kate Murdoch [Nepean RC/NSWIS] taking gold, James Talbot [Balmain RC] taking silver, and in the LTA [2x] Kevin Wall [Balmain RC] and Kate Murdoch combined to take gold. 26

In the LTA 4+ NSW rowers Lauren Webber [PLC], and cox Lucy Froggatt [PLC] took silver while Matilda Slater-Phillips [Balmain RC], Ruby Sutherland [PLC/Balmain RC], James Talbot and Kevin Wall [Balmain RC] took bronze. Notably this was the first time in Rowing Australia history that there was a full field in the LTA 4+. Special thanks to Liam James [Balmain RC] for ensuring this was able to happen.

Thanks to these amazing results NSW again won the Bob Blake shield, firmly establishing their hold on the trophy. It is great to see the emergence and increased competiveness of para-rowing generally and NSW is looking forward to again stepping up the pace next year with the goal to be a crew on every podium in every event.

Rowing Australia Selection

Following the again outstanding results from Nationals, unsurprisingly 6 of the 8 para-athletes invited to national selection were from NSW. Congratulations to Erik Horrie, Caitlin Lisle, James Talbot, Kevin Wall, Ruby Sutherland and Jo Burnand – notably having won 9 medals at Nationals between them!

RNSW Para Pointscore

Congratulations to Balmain Rowing Club 2016-17 winners of the Para Shield finishing the season on a massive 200 points. Congratulations also to Nepean [91 points], Penrith [68 points], Sydney [16 points] and UTS [12 points]. Kate Murdoch won the 2017 President’s Cup for Para Rower of the year and was awarded with a blazer for her efforts.

FISA

The FISA Extraordinary Congress passed the much requested change of race distance for para-athletes approving international racing to be conducted over 2km. There was also an acknowledgement that hull design needed to be re-assessed and several reports are being done, one by US Rowing and due to be completed imminently. We await their conclusions with interest.

Special thanks once again to Rowing NSW staff and Board for their constant unwavering support of Para rowing. Without this our State wouldn't be making the gains it is and wouldn't be forging a pathway for those with disability to learn the art and science of rowing.

NSW UNION OF ROWERS REPORT

I have often heard a particular commentator at SIRC say, “When NSW is strong Rowing Australia is strong” so it is very pleasing to be a part of the successful sporting community that is Rowing in NSW. With wins in the Kings Cup and Men’s Youth Eight as well as gold medals in the single for Kathleen Murdoch and Cam Girdlestone at the Interstate regatta, NSW was truly in fine form this year. Behind these results there is a whole season of training and racing across the state with a huge amount of work put in behind the scenes by Boat Race Officials, coaches and committee members from each club and school and the Union of Rowers is again proud of the role its members play in this community and the support the Union can give to young rowers in NSW.

One of the Unions core roles is to support the development of junior rowers and this is primarily done through our Youth Development Awards. This year we were very pleased to be able to make 7 awards of $1000 each to promising young athletes. The recipients were: Lauren Lyon (Marist Sisters College/Sydney), Alex Nichol (Newington College/ Sydney), Grace Reid (UTS), Daniel Samus (St Augustines College/Mosman), Adelaide Scott (UTS), Bjarne Ungemach (St Augustines College/Mosman), and Lara Wainwright (UTS). The awards were presented at the Rowing NSW awards night held at UTS rowing club and I thank Rowing NSW for their support of the Union this year.

The Union of Rowers has been presenting these awards since 1992 and to date has supported 139 young athletes through this program. Many of these athletes have gone on to see great success in the sport and this year it was very pleasing to see Union Award recipients again well represented in the Australian Team. This year’s team features Awardees in each age group starting with Daniel Samus and Harry Crouch who were selected into the Junior Quad to race in Trakai in August. The Under 21 team which competes against NZ for the Rusty Robertson Trophy features this year’s recipients Lara Wainwright and Grace Reid alongside Romola Davenport who received an award in 2013. Robert Black was again selected into the U23 team and was in this year’s gold medal winning Men’s Four and the U23 Women’s Quad which won the silver featured and Harriet Hudson. Genevieve has also been selected into the Senior Women’s Quad alongside past awardee Leah Saunders and finally Hamish Playfair who received a Union Scholarship in 2009 is due to compete in the Men’s Eight. Congratulations to each of these athletes and I would like to wish them and the whole Australian Rowing Team the best of success.

The Union of Rowers funds their Development Awards through our major fundraiser the Scholarship Club. Our activities where again amazingly supported by the Rowing community in NSW and I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who purchase tickets to our fundraiser each year and make it possible for the Union to support and encourage young rowers at this early stage in their careers. Our activities where very successful this year and I am sure that given the great outcomes the program is achieving the community will continue to support the Unions fundraising. Alongside the Scholarship Club our merchandise sales are a crucial source of revenue to support the Development Awards and I would like to thank both our loyal customers and Terry Maher for his continuing work to source and sell merchandise in support of this good cause.

The Union of Rowers other core program is to be a custodian for rowing archives in NSW and under the guidance of a very keen subcommittee the Unions collection of memorabilia is in good hands. I would like to thank Louis Petrin for kindly making available space alongside his own extensive rowing memorabilia for the storage and cataloguing of the many items in our collection and I would strongly 28 encourage anyone who has an interest in rowing history to get in touch with the Union and Louis to learn more about the collection. The Union of Rowers is eager to accept donations of material including old programs, minute books, film and results and is committed to making our collection available to the community.

On behalf of the membership and myself I would like to thank the Union Executive Committee for their hard work throughout the year. Each member of the committee is already hugely involved in the sport in other capacities and their ongoing generosity in donating their time and expertise to the Union of Rowers is very much appreciated. Finally, I would like to thank the Board and staff of Rowing NSW in particular CEO Tony Blower for their ongoing support of the Union of Rowers and leadership in the sport. I would also like to thank on behalf of the Union all the volunteers and officials from every club that have helped make this a successful year for the sport in NSW.

Rowing Friendship Day

The annual Rowing Friendship Day was held this year at North Shore Rowing Club on 28th May. It was a welcome change to have a different club host this event. Thanks to Helen Ritchie and Jocelyn Gregory for looking after us on the day and to Sue Wannan for making it happen.

An eight, coxed by Helen Ritchie went out for a long row up the Lane Cove River. The row was followed by a General Meeting and lunch, attended by 16 members. It was a great event with lots of laughter and shared memories.

The meeting focused primarily on where to put Union support and how many courses/projects to fund, especially after the discontinuation of face-to-face level 1 rowing courses. Ideas will be followed up with Rowing NSW.

The NSW Union of Oarswomen is proud of its continuing association with Rowing New South Wales.

THE L.E. STEPTO MEMORIAL TRUST FUND REPORT

The Laurie Stepto Memorial Trust was established on the 24th November 1987 and was established to acknowledge the contributions to rowing in New South Wales by Laurie Stepto. The purpose of the Trust is to receive donations and funds from other sources, invest those funds and make distributions from time to time for the benefit of Rowing NSW.

Laurie Stepto was an accountant by profession and joined the Glebe Rowing Club in 1947. He was Club Secretary from 1952 to 1956 and delegate to the NSW Rowing Association from 1948 to 1955. He was made a Life Member of the Glebe Club in 1965 to acknowledge his considerable contribution over 18 years. During the same period he was most successful in his accountancy profession and became a senior partner in the firm of Hungerfords.

He played a most important role in NSW Rowing Administration as Treasurer from 1955 to 1967, Deputy Chairman 1967-70 and President 1978-86. He was awarded a Medal in the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1979 for his significant contribution to rowing in NSW and Australia. Laurie passed away in Sydney in November 1986.

For many years the fund supported the costs of NSW State Teams. Until more recently, it now assists in the development of future champions from NSW with an annual scholarship awarded of $5,000 to an aspiring young NSW based rower who is showing early outstanding potential.

Applicants must have completed Year 12 and be eligible to compete in Under 21 competition in the current and following years’ regatta seasons. The ultimate objective of the Scholarship is to encourage young rowers to achieve success in championship racing with their club as well as representing NSW and possibly Australia in interstate and international competition.

Scholarship awardees have been:

2015: Sean Murphy (Mosman)

2016: Georgina Masters (UTS)

The successful scholar for 2017 is Romola Davenport from Sydney Rowing Club. Romola began rowing in 2010 as a year 7 student at Sydney Girls High School. In 2011 she joined the Sydney Rowing Club where she began sculling and competing in club regattas and the state championships. Throughout her schooling she competed for both Sydney Girls High School and Sydney Rowing Club, across all boat classes.

During this time, she was twice elected by her peers as Captain of Boats, won two NSW Championships in the single scull, and received a New South Wales Combined High Schools Blue for rowing.

She is now studying in Canberra at ANU and remains very involved in Sydney Rowing Club, training in Sydney for most of the year and studying by correspondence where necessary, as well as attending club annual camps and competing for Sydney Rowing Club at all major regattas. She has been selected for two Australian representative teams, four NSW teams, has won four Australian titles and five NSW state championships. She also wants to represent Australia at the Olympics in 2024.

32

Congratulations Romola.

Geoffrey McIntyre AM retired as a trustee and Chairman of the trust in March. We thank Geoff for his great contribution over many years. Andrew Rowley has been appointed as Chairman.

CENTRAL DISTRICTS ROWING ASSOCIATION REPORT

Nine CDRA regattas and two Rowing NSW regattas were conducted by CDRA clubs in the 2016/17 season. Although most regattas were run in ideal conditions, the weather had an adverse effect on others. The first regatta of the season was cut short due to strong winds. The heat wave in February resulted in the Endeavour regatta being shortened when the temperature reached 38°, after races at the Lake Macquarie regatta had been run in 36° on the previous day. The cold and showers of the CDRA Championships were pleasant by comparison.

A highlight of the season was the handicap mixed eight event sponsored by Croker Oars at the Taree Summer regatta that saw 14 eights come down the course side-by-side in the one race.

The nine CDRA regattas attracted 6657 seats entered for an average of 740 seats per regatta. This represented an increase of 78 seats per regatta over the previous season and was the second highest participation level in CDRA history, exceeded only by the 2014/15 season.

CDRA Premiership

The Central Districts Premier Club for 2016/17 was Newcastle Grammar School (979 points) with Newcastle Rowing Club (635) second and Hunter Valley Grammar School (560) third. Newcastle Grammar School also took out the pointscore shields for Single Sculls and Multiple Sculls with Newcastle Rowing Club first in the Sweep Oar pointscore.

CDRA Results Statewide

CDRA clubs did well at the NSW Sprint Championships with 9 gold medals shared by Newcastle Grammar School (3), Newcastle University (2), Hunter Valley Grammar School (2), Endeavour Rowing Club (1) and Newcastle Rowing Club (1). However, the cancellation of events due to extreme heat at the NSW Championship regatta in February limited Central District clubs to one win (Newcastle Grammar School). Newcastle Grammar School did much better at the Edward Trickett Grade Championships with 4 wins. The strength of Newcastle Grammar’s results gained the school 7th place in the Rowing NSW premiership.

CDRA schools had 5 wins at the Independent Schools regatta (Newcastle Grammar [NGS] 4, Hunter Valley Gramma [HVGS] 1), 3 gold at the CHS Championships (Maitland Grossmann High 2, Lambton High 1), 2 gold at the Schoolgirl Head (NGS, HVGS) and 1 win at the Schoolboy Head (NGS).

Central District masters rowers performed well at the NSW Masters Championships with 12 gold medals, strongest performances coming from Lake Macquarie and Manning River Rowing Clubs.

The Association would like to record the appreciation of all members for the valuable contribution made by the following :

 John McLeod for his ongoing service as Secretary/Treasurer and Public Officer as well as his work with the computerised regatta control system.  Peter Bond for his service as Association Recorder.  Luke Budworth for his duties as Gear Steward.

35

 Carol Isaacs for her efforts in Coaching Development.  All Boat Race Officials and all club members who have volunteered their services to make the conduct of regattas throughout the season a success.

NORTHERN RIVERS ROWING ASSOCIATION REPORT

The past regatta season generally escaped major disruption from flooding & weather events. Attendance was again bolstered by the attendance of Queensland clubs and is welcomed. The attendance by some NRRA member clubs was a little less than previous seasons. Perhaps this will improve for the approaching regatta season.

The association would like to thank all the volunteers and boat race officials who have made themselves available to perform the many tasks running a regatta demands. We hope to see an increase in you ranks in coming season.

A note of appreciation to long serving NRRA treasurer Keryn Saunders for all her efforts over past seasons handing the task to Sion Hillman from the Iluka club. Similarly, to the outgoing BRO representative Michael Collins who passes the baton on to Bob Meehan.

Winners of the annual point scores are as follows:

OBITUARIES

Allan Pollock

Allan passed away in the evening of Saturday, November 19th 2016, aged 60 years. Representing St George Rowing Club, Allan was a three time medallist in the Lightweight Single Scull at the National Championships, winning back to back Silver Medals in 1982 and 1983 as well as a Bronze Medal in 1985.

Allan represented Australia in the 1983 World Championships in the Lightweight Men’s Single Scull, placing fifth. He won the National Championship in the Men’s Double Scull in Lake Barrington, Tasmania in 1984 in partnership with Tim McLaren and later that year was selected as a Reserve for the Men’s Quad Scull which won the Silver Medal at the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

In 2008, after a long break from competition, Allan returned to the water with St George Rowing Club in Masters Competition. Three years later, he again enjoyed success on Lake Barrington, winning the Men’s E Double at the Australian Masters, this time with Peter McLaren, Tim’s brother. Also in 2011, Allan was selected in an all-St George NSW Masters Quad Scull that won the Bronze Medal. Allan was a Life Member of St George Rowing Club and served as Vice-Captain as well as on the Board of Directors.

Alan Flint

Alan Flint, Leichhardt Rowing Club’s longest serving Treasurer passed away 25th January 2017.

He joined the Club in 1969 after a strong interest in Rugby Union. Between 1972 and 1999 he served as Treasurer with fund raising through raffles, phone book deliveries etc, together with his simple hand written monthly reports personally presented at Monthly Committee Meetings. His financial administration resulted in his Life Membership awarded in 1978.

On his retirement he moved from his family residence at Beverly Hills to Wamberal on the Central Coast. In recent years, health issues resulted in his transfer to an Aged Care Facility in Erina, where Old Rower representatives, Ross Ullo and Tony Potter made their final visit only days before his passing.

Alan was a very private person and kept to himself: He enjoyed the TV provided by the Leichhardt “Balcony Boyz” whilst in the facility, and will always be remembered for that magnificent smile and handshake he gave on farewells.

Bruce Riley

On Saturday 4th of February 2017, one of life’s gentlemen our dear friend and President of the Iluka Rowing & Aquatic Club, Bruce Riley passed away doing what he loved dearly, rowing and competing at Regattas. Many people rendered assistance on the day and the Iluka Rowing & Aquatic Club would like to acknowledge their support and that of the two ambulance crews as well as the staff of Murwillumbah Hospital. Bruce will be missed by all of us, but he’s left us with some beautiful memories and much laughter ringing in our ears from his fabulous story telling.

"easy oar Bruce"

Wade Hewett

Wade’s involvement with rowing came by way of his daughters’ education at Pymble Ladies College, being a big supporter of the rowing program at the school prior, during and after his daughters had graduated.

Around the turn of the century, Wade was instrumental in negotiating the partnership between Leichhardt Rowing Club and Pymble Ladies College to build a magnificent new facility shared by the club and the school. The current boathouse has enabled both the club and school to prosper, with well over 400 people rowing out of the facility.

A huge supporter of Eight’s racing, Wade helped negotiate the sponsorship prizemoney with DHL for the Super-Eights concept in the mid-2000’s. His support for Eight’s racing was not just limited to his significant off-water involvement as Wade would often be a part of one of the many Leichhardt eights that race annually at the Head of the Yarra in Melbourne.

He held the position of Councillor to Rowing Australia from 2006 until November 2009 and his affable and social nature, along with his seemingly endless time for people, were of great assistance in strengthening the relationship between Rowing NSW, Rowing Australia and all State and Territory bodies.

Wade continued his involvement with Rowing NSW as part of the Facilities and Development Group in searching for areas to build upon or facilities to commence rowing from around Sydney Harbour. This effort to help find homes for school programs without a boathouse of their own as well as for new rowing clubs was part of his strong efforts to continue to grow the sport. He assisted in bringing numerous people into the sport over more than a decade through his work with the Leichhardt Rowing Club Beginners and Learn to Row program and assisted and mentored many members of the club always having time for anyone. In more recent years he volunteered his time as a Boat Race Official.

Leichhardt Rowing Club honoured his enormous contribution to the club by christening a Filippi quad scull the Wade Hewett in addition to having Life Membership of the club bestowed upon him in 2015.

Rebecca Wilson

A passionate, insightful and uncompromising sports journalist with News Limited, Rebecca became involved in the sport through her sons Tom and Will rowing as part of a resurgent program at Cranbrook. The involvement continued with Tom’s move to Sydney University Boat Club, where he represented Australia at the 2013 World Under 23 Rowing Championships in the Men’s Eight. During his time at Sydney University, Rebecca’s enthusiasm and support were instrumental in significant fundraising efforts to give young athletes the opportunity to compete internationally for their club or country.

Her hands-on efforts were not just limited to fundraising, Rebecca was often present cooking for athletes on training camps also taking on a mentoring role as well. Professionally, Rebecca’s willingness to cover sports that don’t hog headlines was particularly welcome.

Whilst Rebecca was a strong supporter of rowing, her media coverage of the sport was never patronising, happy to call it how she saw it on the administration of the sport.

Rebecca is survived by husband John and sons Tom and Will.

Beryl Crockford

The 3 time Olympian represented Great Britain in the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games in the Coxless Pair and raced in the 1980 Moscow Olympics and 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in the Single Scull.

A trailblazer for Women’s rowing, Beryl was part of Great Britain’s first female World Championship winning crew in 1985 in the Women’s Lightweight Double Scull. Beryl also won the first women's single scull invitational event at Henley Royal Regatta (the Princess Royal Challenge Cup) in 1982 and was the first female member of Leander Club. Beryl continued her involvement with the sport in Australia at Drummoyne Rowing Club, coaching Beatrix Sheldrick onto Australian Junior Team representation in 2008 and occasionally racing in Masters events, notably winning both the D and E single scull events at the 2011 NSW Masters Championships.

Beryl was also one of the first female Directors of Rowing at a GPS School during her time at Sydney Boys High School. Beryl is survived by husband Duncan and son Daniel.

Nim Greenwood

Nim Greenwood passed away 9th September 2016 .He is survived by his wife Helen, daughter Anne & son-in-law Mark and their children Julia and Robert. He passed away peacefully, without warning, and without any pain, sitting in his chair in his Terrey Hills Nursing Home.

Nim was a part of the NSW King's Cup Crew from 1950-1955, winning in both 1950 and 1951.

59

Robert Williams

Robert joined the Manning River Rowing Club as a junior in 1960 when still at Taree High School and was a member until 1969 when he moved to Sydney and joined Drummoyne Rowing Club. Robert was elected as Club Captain in 1961, a position he held for three years, although regardless of the position held, he was always chasing up new members, and forever putting them into crews. Robert was a member of the Lightweight Four which won the Northern Rivers Championships at Brushgrove in 1967 and again in 1968. In April 1969 Robert Williams resigned as Sports Secretary of the Club due to his impending move to Sydney and was awarded Life Membership of the Club, the second member to achieve the honour. In 1989 the Club purchased a second hand eight from Scots College which was named the Robert Williams.

Robert and wife Robyn and family moved to Sydney in 1969 where he joined Drummoyne Rowing Club. His work as a representative in the optical business left little time for rowing however in 1980 he moved to Warners Bay on Lake Macquarie to establish his own retail optical business. Robert Williams served as Vice President of the Central Districts Rowing Association in 1988 and 1989 and was President from 1990 to 1994.

Robert was also a qualified Boat Race Official and worked as such at regattas, particularly in the Newcastle area. He moved to Carrington in early 2005 and became a social member of Newcastle Rowing Club. There was a large number of people at the funeral with former rowers who have been connected with Manning River, Hunter (now Lake Macquarie) and Newcastle, rowing clubs.

Mike Ryan

Mike joined BRC about 1967. His first competition was in a JB Sharp Regatta in the 'tub-pair', rowing with his mate Warren Fountain. Mike was always keen to help serving on the committee for many years, ran learn to rows, held fundraising functions and was one of the founding members of the new building committee. He was passionate about the club and always ready to lend a hand, look at what improvements might be made to the shed, co-op volunteers (including his lovely wife Maree) and find the funds and do it. He was honoured with BRC Life Membership in 2000.

Gene Mason

Rowers will be sad to hear that Gene Mason died last September aged 73, after a long illness. Dearly loved and cherished husband of Carole and loving father of Joanne, Linda, Anna, Lisa. He was much loved and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Gene started rowing with Glebe, before moving to Balmain where he teamed with Frank Gardner rowing Juniors with great success. Gene transferred to Haberfield at the end of the 60's and went on to win the Champion Eights of NSW and won Bronze in the Coxless Four at ARC 1974. He was acknowledged as one of the great characters of rowing, and was a gentle giant who loved to play whenever the opportunity presented itself.

NOTE TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2017

1. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Basis of Consolidation

The financial statements consolidate the financial results of Rowing NSW Incorporated, and the LE Stepto Memorial Trust Fund. The Incorporated Association & its Controlled Entities together are referred to as the Economic Entity.

Basis of Accounting

Rowing New South Wales Inc. is incorporated in the state of New South Wales under the Associations Incorporations Act 2009. The financial statements of the Economic Entity have been prepared as Special Purpose Financial Statements for use by the Board and Members of the Incorporated Association and for the purposes of complying with the New South Wales legislation the Associations Incorporation Act 2009. The financial statements have been prepared on the basis that the Economic Entity is not a reporting entity because there are unlikely to be any other users of the financial statements as all users can obtain information specific to their needs upon demand.

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the recognition and measurement requirements specified by the Australian Accounting Standards and Interpretations issued by the Australian Accounting Standards Board ('AASB') and the disclosure requirements of AASB 101 'Presentation of Financial Statements', AASB 107 'Statement of Cash Flows', AASB 108 'Accounting Policies, Changes in Accounting Estimates and Errors' and AASB 1048 'Interpretation and Application of Standards' and AASB 1054 'Australian Additional Disclosures', as appropriate for not−for−profit oriented entities. These financial statements do not conform with International Financial Reporting Standards as issued by the International Accounting Standards Board ('IASB').

The financial statements have been prepared on an accruals basis and are based on historic costs and do not take into account changing money values or, except where specifically stated, current valuations of non−current assets. The preparation of the financial statements requires the use of certain critical accounting estimates. It also requires management to exercise its judgement in the process of applying the incorporated association's accounting policies. The areas involving a higher degree of judgement or complexity, or areas where assumptions and estimates are significant to the financial statements, are disclosed in note paragraph titled ‘Critical Accounting Adjustments’.

Financial Statements Preparation

The classification “Members’ Accumulated Funds” is used in the financial statements as the Incorporated Association has no shareholders. It is believed the use of the classification “Equity” would be misleading as such no statement of equity has been prepared.

65

ROWING NEW SOUTH WALES INC. & ITS CONTROLLED ENTITIES ABN 16 289 721 685

NOTE TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2017

The following material accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation of these financial statements.

New Accounting Standards and Interpretations not yet mandatory or early adopted Australian Accounting Standards and Interpretations that have recently been issued or amended but are not yet mandatory, have not been early adopted by the incorporated association for the annual reporting period ended 30 June 2017. The incorporated association has not yet assessed the impact of these new or amended Accounting Standards and Interpretations.

Income Tax

The Incorporated Association is exempt from income tax by virtue of Section 50−45 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997. As such no provision for income tax has been made and tax−effect accounting has not been adopted.

Cash and Cash Equivalents

Cash and short−term deposits in the Statement of Financial Position comprise cash at bank and on hand together with short−term deposits with an original maturity of twelve months or less.

Trade and Other Receivables

Trade receivables, which generally have 90 day terms, are recognised and carried at original invoice amount less an allowance for doubtful debts.

Property, Plant and Equipment

Property, plant and equipment are brought to account at cost less where applicable any accumulated depreciation and any impairment of value. The carrying amount of property, plant and equipment is reviewed annually by the directors to ensure it is not in excess of the recoverable amount of those assets. The recoverable amount is assessed on the basis of expected net cash flows which will be received from the assets employment and subsequent disposal.

The depreciable amount of all property, plant and equipment, including building improvements, are depreciated over their useful lives commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use.

The depreciation is charged on a straight line basis and the following rates used for each class of asset are as follows:

Building Improvements 5%

Boats, Motors and Equipment 9% − 33%

Office Equipment and Fixtures 10% − 33%

Motor Vehicles 12.5% 66

ROWING NEW SOUTH WALES INC. & ITS CONTROLLED ENTITIES ABN 16 289 721 685

NOTE TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2017

Leases

The determination of whether an arrangement is or contains a lease is based on the substance of the arrangement and requires an assessment of whether the fulfilment of the arrangement is dependent on the use of a specific asset or assets and the arrangement conveys a right to use the asset.

A distinction is made between finance leases, which effectively transfer from the lessor to the lessee substantially all the risks and benefits incidental to ownership of leased assets, and operating leases, under which the lessor effectively retains substantially all such risks and benefits.

Finance leases are capitalised. A lease asset and liability are established at the fair value of the leased assets, or if lower, the present value of minimum lease payments. Lease payments are allocated between the principal component of the lease liability and the finance costs, so as to achieve a constant rate of interest on the remaining balance of the liability.

Leased assets acquired under a finance lease are depreciated over the asset's useful life or over the shorter of the asset’s useful life and the lease term if there is no reasonable certainty that the company will obtain ownership at the end of the lease term.

Operating lease payments, net of any incentives received from the lessor, are charged to profit or loss on a straight−line basis over the term of the lease.

Accounts Payable and Other Payables

Accounts payable and other payables represent the liability outstanding at the end of the reporting period for goods and services received by the association during the reporting period that remain unpaid. The balance is recognised as a current liability with the amounts normally paid within 30 days of recognition of the liability.

Goods and Services Tax (GST)

Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Receivables and payables are stated inclusive of the amount of GST receivable or payable. The net amount of GST recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO is included with other receivables or payables in the assets and liabilities statement.

Revenue and Other Income

Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable after taking into account any trade discounts and volume rebates allowed. For this purpose, deferred consideration is not discounted to present values when recognising revenue.

67

ROWING NEW SOUTH WALES INC. & ITS CONTROLLED ENTITIES ABN 16 289 721 685

NOTE TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2017

Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest method, which for floating rate financial assets is the rate inherent in the instrument. Dividend revenue is recognised when the right to receive a dividend has been established.

Grant and donation income is recognised when the entity obtains control over the funds, which is generally at the time of receipt.

If conditions are attached to the grant that must be satisfied before the association is eligible to receive the contribution, recognition of the grant as revenue will be deferred until those conditions are satisfied.

All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax.

Employee Benefits

Provision is made, as a current liability, for the legal liability to permanent employees for annual leave and long service leave. Long service leave is not provided until a permanent employee attains five years continuous service. Sick leave is brought to account as incurred.

Contributions are made by the economic entity to nominated employee superannuation funds and are charged as expenses when incurred. Apart from statutory obligations the Association has no other legal obligation to provide benefits to employees on retirement.

Maintenance and Repairs

Maintenance, repair costs and minor renewals are charged as expenses when incurred.

Critical accounting judgements, estimates and assumptions

The preparation of the financial statements requires management to make judgements, estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts in the financial statements. Management continually evaluates its judgements and estimates in relation to assets, liabilities, contingent liabilities, revenue and expenses. Management bases its judgements, estimates and assumptions on historical experience and on other various factors, including expectations of future events, management believes to be reasonable under the circumstances. The resulting accounting judgements and estimates will seldom equal the related actual results. The judgements, estimates and assumptions that have a significant risk of causing a material adjustment to the carrying amounts of assets and liabilities within the next financial year are discussed below.

Estimation of useful lives of assets

The economic entity determines the estimated useful lives and related depreciation and amortisation charges for its property, plant and equipment. The useful lives could change significantly as a result of technical innovations or some other event.

68

ROWING NEW SOUTH WALES INC. & ITS CONTROLLED ENTITIES ABN 16 289 721 685

NOTE TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2017

The depreciation charge will increase where the useful lives are less than previously estimated lives, or technically obsolete or non−strategic assets that have been abandoned or sold will be written off or written down.

Impairment of Assets

At the end of each reporting period, property, plant and equipment, intangible assets and investments are reviewed to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have suffered an impairment loss. If there is an indication of possible impairment, the recoverable amount of any affected asset (or group of related assets) is estimated and compared with its carrying amount. The recoverable amount is the higher of the asset’s fair value less costs of disposal and the present value of the asset’s future cash flows discounted at the expected rate of return. If the estimated recoverable amount is lower, the carrying amount is reduced to the estimated recoverable amount and an impairment loss is recognised immediately in profit or loss.
