  • Tracing the Problems Faced by British Rare Breed Producers
Tracing the problems faced by British rare breed producers What’s the real issue behind the Horsemeat scandal? The ‘Horsemeat Scandal’ revealed a fundamental breakdown in the meat supply chain and a complete disconnection between us, the public, and the food that we eat. 100% traceability is a crucial requirement for protecting our edible biodiversity, an issue particularly relevant to the sheep and cattle industries. Traditional rare breed producers up and down the country are fighting an uphill battle to keep these products on our plates. With the current system favouring larger, fast maturing, commercial breeds, it is up to us to offer the much needed support to these farmers. The ‘Horsemeat Scandal’ showed the scale of the task many of our rare breed producers are facing. However the sensational stories which shocked the nation largely excluded the plight of the small scale producer. It is easy to get hung up about the labelling of horse meat as beef but isn’t it equally scandalous that wonderful British breeds - such as Blue Grey cattle, Old Gloucester cattle and Herdwick Sheep, with all their unique qualities - are being lost in a mountain of nameless meat! At a time when meat consumption is at its highest ever levels, we have a responsibility to be responsible consumers. There has to be a very real and drastic change in the way we think about and buy meat. What can you as the consumer do? At a very basic level, we need to show that there is a demand to know what we’re eating.

agriculture Article PDO as a Mechanism for Reterritorialisation and Agri-Food Governance: A Comparative Analysis of Cheese Products in the UK and Switzerland Damian Maye 1,*, James Kirwan 1, Emilia Schmitt 2,3, Daniel Keech 1 and Dominique Barjolle 3 1 Countryside and Community Research Institute (CCRI), University of Gloucestershire, Gloucester GL2 9HW, UK; [email protected] (J.K.); [email protected] (D.K.) 2 Research Institute for Organic Agriculture (FiBL), 5070 Frick, Switzerland; emilia.schmitt@fibl.org 3 Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zürich, Switzerland; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +44-124-271-4133 Academic Editors: Giaime Berti, Moya Kneafsey, Larry Lev, Irene Monasterolo and Sergio Schneider Received: 27 July 2016; Accepted: 10 October 2016; Published: 18 October 2016 Abstract: The protection of geographical indications (European regulation 1151/2012) is arguably the most significant initiative, certainly within Europe, that promotes foods with territorial associations and reorganises agri-food chain governance through a strategy of reterritorialisation. Research on Protected Designation of Origins (PDOs) and Protected Geographical Indications (PGIs) suggests that they generate significant economic value at an EU-level, especially in certain countries. They can also help to deliver territorial rural development policy and develop new food markets. In this paper we examine the way the PDO scheme has been developed and applied in one commodity sector (cheese) in two countries (Switzerland and the UK), where the uptake of PDOs is variable. We adopt a food chain approach and examine specific cheese product case studies (at micro and meso levels) in both countries to better understand how the PDO scheme (as a territorialisation and respacing strategy) is implemented.
