NEW ENGLAND CIRCLE PARKER HOUSE , MARCH 9, 1975

Welcome to the fourth dinner discussion of the New England Circle with Guest Speaker, Georgia State Senator, Julian Bond.

Our purpose is to assemble with others for discussion of social, political, literary, and educational topics, having as a common goal the exchange of ideas and opinions that can lead to constructive change in our nation and in our personal lives.

In 1965, there were fewer than 100 Black elected officials in the South; today, there are over 2,000 and the number continues to grow, thanks partially to the efforts of Julian Bond and the Civil Rights organizations he sponsors and supports.

Julian Bond was elected in 1965 to the Georgia House of Representatives, but was barred from taking his seat by legislators who objected to his statements on the Vietnam War. Julian Bond was seated in 1967, after a United States Supreme Court decision in his favor. After serving four terms in the House, Julian Bond was elected in November, 1974, to the Georgia State Senate.

Julian Bond co-chaired the challenge delegation from Georgia at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, and at the age of twenty-eight, was nominated for Vice-President — the first Black in history to be so honored. Senator Bond is now preparing for the 1976 Presidential primaries, and is considered to be the embodiment of the New Politics.
