These are good for us to ponder as we settle into this long stretch of Ordinary Time. St. Paul reminds us today in Second Corinthians that “while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith and not by sight.” Each day is another step on our journey of faith. We will probably notice very little difference in our faith life from one day to the next, just as our perspective on the world does not change much with only one little step. It is necessary for us to take the longer view to see and appreciate all the steps we’ve already navigated on the journey and in what direction we’re headed. Likewise, to use the image Jesus presents in today’s gospel, when the seed is planted in the ground and begins to grow, we’re not going to notice much difference in the growing plant’s appearance overnight but over time we do witness the growth of the plant to maturity and fruitfulness. Ordinary Time is the season for us to more extensively reflect on God’s word and to be continually nourished at the Eucharistic table so that we can be about the business of growing and tending our faith daily toward maturity and fruitfulness as we draw ever closer to our ultimate destination. As we continue to emerge from pandemic restrictions, this weekend we will be resuming visits to the homebound by our Eucharistic Ministers. Ministers are to wear a mask when visiting a home and they must sanitize their hands at each visit. Other routine pastoral visits are also now permitted so any homebound parishioner who would like a visit from me for confession and/or anointing of the sick, please contact me to schedule time for a visit. Also, as our weekend Mass attendance has been slowly increasing in recent weeks, we will now be scheduling two Eucharistic Ministers to assist in the distribution of Holy Communion at each Mass. Thanks to another seven gifts received last week for the 2021 Diocesan Lenten Appeal, we surpassed our parish goal! As of Monday, June 7 we have received a total of $71,498 in pledges and gifts (102% of our total parish goal of $70,000) from 259 households (36% of our parish). Our parish share is currently $12,442 and grows with each gift...100% of everything we raise for the rest of the year remains in our parish—assessment-free—to do work that we need to do here at the parish. The active phase of this year’s appeal is winding down but it’s not too late to get involved...you may return your pledge or gift by mail, in person during office hours, or drop it in the collection basket. You can also make your pledge online by clicking on the “Donate” link on our parish website or by visiting the diocesan website, www.dioceseofgreensburg.org. On Wednesday we celebrate the feast day of our parish patron, St. Regis. John Francis Regis was born into a family of some wealth and status in Southern France on January 31, 1597. As a young man, he was so impressed with the recently-formed Jesuits that he entered the novitiate at the age of 18. John Francis spent several years teaching in grammar schools while pursuing studies in and theology. He was ordained a priest in 1630 and, already known for his love and skill of preaching and teaching, was sent to the Diocese of Viviers in the French Alps, a region that had experienced much political and social upheaval during the time of the . John Francis was especially noted for his ministry to orphans and at-risk women, creating safe houses and helping them find jobs to turn their lives around. His simple, direct preaching style was appealing to people of all classes and helped to win many converts who had turned away from the Church during the Reformation. John Francis walked from town-to- town in his Alpine diocese, even in winter. He developed pneumonia in December 1640 and died on New Year’s Eve, a month shy of his 44th birthday. St. John Francis Regis was canonized in 1737 and, in addition to being our parish patron, is also the of medical social workers and illegitimate children. St. John Francis Regis, pray for us!
