The festival provides participants with an extraordinary venue for performing, learning and sharing their musical experience with an unrivalled panel of adjudicators.

This festival is made possible through the time and effort of many teachers, students and donors who understand the importance of quality music instruction. We thank all of you who are supporting this special opportunity for hundreds of Lower Mainland music students. Good luck to everyone!

Festival Reminders

1. Students may not play the Festival piano between classes and/or during breaks.

2. Original copies of music must be provided for the adjudicator. Photocopies will not be permitted – students who ignore this rule will not receive a certificate. However, legal downloaded music is acceptable. A student may not share music with someone in the same class. Three marks will be deducted if music is not presented.

3. Music must be memorized to avoid a 3-mark deduction. (Note: if the student plays with the music, a second original copy of the music should be provided for the adjudicator)

4. Each student must perform the piece (or movement) specified on the entry form. If a different piece (or movement) is played, a mark will not be awarded. Selections may not be changed after the entry deadline.

5. Entry fees will not be refunded under any circumstances.

6. Students should arrive 15 minutes prior to their class time. Late entrants will be called again at the end of the class. Students will not be permitted to perform in any classes other than those to which they are assigned in the program.

7. Repeats may not be played. However, D.C. and D.S. markings should be played in order to maintain the integrity of the piece.

8. Measure numbers should be marked at the beginning of each line of the music.

9. Cellular phones and pages must be turned off during Festival classes. Cameras and video equipment will NOT be permitted under any circumstances.

10. Students, teachers and the public may not approach the adjudicator. Adjudicator’s decisions are final and will not be discussed. Questions may be addressed, in writing, to Colleen Myles (Festival Chairperson).

11. The Festival Committee will determine scholarships/trophies – all decisions made regarding awards are final. See awards list in Festival Syllabus for details regarding eligibility criteria. Award recipients will be contacted within several days after the close of the Festival.

12. Certificates are distributed during the Festival. The Contemporary Music Achievement scholarship/trophy and other trophies will be presented at the Scholarship Concert on Saturday, March 8th , 2014.

Carillon Music Academy Welcomes Our Adjudicators

MICHAEL CREBER

Michael Creber is one of the west coast's most sought-after musicians, onstage as well as in the recording studio. He pursues a wide-ranging career as a keyboardist, composer and producer, embracing many areas of popular music including jazz, Latin, R&B, rock, pop, musical theatre, country and folk.

Michael has toured internationally, performed and recorded with some of the top entertainers from the 1980’s to the present, including David Foster, k.d. lang, Cyndi Lauper, Raffi, Petula Clark, Regis Philbin, Lee Aaron, and the Irish Rovers. Mr. Creber, as a member of k.d. lang’s band “The Reclines,” appeared on the Johnny Carson Show, Arsenio Hall, Saturday Night Live and the Grammy Awards. One Los Angeles reviewer dubbed Michael's outstanding piano work from this period, heard on k.d.'s 1989 “Absolute Torch and Twang,” as "a cross between Floyd Cramer and Thelonius Monk." With award winning artist Raffi, Michael performed for U.S. President Bill Clinton’s first inauguration, a Washington D.C. luncheon for Mikhail Gorbachev as well as sold-out concerts at the Gershwin Theater in New York City. In 1994 Michael co-produced and co-wrote Raffi’s “Bananaphone” CD for which he earned a Grammy Award nomination.

Mr. Creber’s credits as musical director includes ”You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown,” “Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well And Living In Paris,” and “Tapestry: the Music of Carole King,” a hit revue at Vancouver's Arts Club Theatre. He and his wife, Monique, produce and direct “The Magic of Christmas”, an annual benefit concert for the past nine years. Michael and Monique perform in the concert along with a ten-piece band and 450 children. Some of the guest stars who have helped this production raise over $30,000 for charity include Michael Burgess, The Nylons, Susan Aglukark, The Rankin Sisters and Norman Foote.

Michael has three of original music to his credit: two solo piano collections, “Brand New Smile” and “Dancers of the Spheres,” as well as a CD by the Michael Creber Trio entitled “Smooth Sailing.” He has kept busy writing scores for film and radio, producing CDs for various artists, teaching and doing session work as a keyboardist. Michael performs regularly on CBC Radio's JazzBeat and Vancouver's Hot Air. He is also a regular on the Vancouver jazz scene in the Michael Creber Trio and as a pianist for Fantazea.

BRIAN TAYLOR

Brian Taylor began his piano studies at the age of six and soon received the first of many awards and scholarships. Later, he obtained a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University Of Saskatchewan in Piano Performance. Mr. Taylor also holds diplomas in Jazz Studies and Popular Arranging Techniques. He has studied and worked with Robin and Marilyn Harrison as well as Merv Mauthe, to name a few of his esteemed teachers.

In Saskatoon, Brian was the head teacher of a large music school where he managed over twenty teachers, developed curriculum and held monthly seminars for the teaching staff. Before settling in the lower mainland, he was the Director of Education at a Toronto area music academy where he was instrumental in expanding the school from 100 to over 300 students in less than three years. Brian also was a highly sought after accompanist and performer, participating in many charity events and fundraisers.

In his thirty-four years of teaching, Brian has worked with all ages of students and genres of music. He has had many students win major scholarships to some of Canada’s top music colleges and universities, a legacy he is most proud of. Mr. Taylor has a vast knowledge of classical repertoire and contemporary styles. He has adjudicated extensively across Western Canada and Ontario since 1987. Brian enjoys conducting workshops for students and teachers, with topics ranging from pedagogy to improvisation. In 1995 he joined Carillon Music Academy, where he is a full-time piano instructor as well as the Education Manager of over twenty teachers.
