SUSTAINING SPIRIT: LENTEN PRACTICES DURING THE PANDEMIC directory happenings A Conversation with Jack Shea Friday, February 19 | 7 pm In these stressful times we often begin or end our greetings to one another with, “Take care of yourself.” Yes! But also, strange as it may sound, we should allow our spirits - connected to the Divine Spirit - to take care of us.

The mission of Spirit is to enter into our minds, bodies, and social relationship and fill them with passion, pleasure, and purpose. But we have to engage in spiritual practices for that to happen. Let’s talk about it.

Jack Shea is a consultant with decades of experience in providing theological and formation services to parishes and faith-based organizations.

He has published over twenty books of theology and spirituality, three works of fiction, and three books of poetry. His most recently published books are Seeing Haloes: Christmas Poems to Open the Heart and To Dare the Our Father: A Transformative Spiritual Practice.

Jack lectures nationally and internationally on storytelling in world religions, faith- based health care, contemporary spirituality, and the spirit and work movement.

Douglass Park, established in 1869, is a 173 acre park that winds through Chicago's west side North Lawndale and Little Village neighborhoods.

For 151 years the park was named after Stephen A. Douglas, a pre- Civil War U.S. Senator and slave owner. After a more than eight year long racial and gender education and justice campaign by North Lawndale's residents and their supporters, the Chicago City Council approved the renaming of the site in 2020. The park is now named Frederick and Anna Douglass Park, for abolitionist and his wife .

The expansive and beautiful park houses, a miniature golf course, five playgrounds, an outdoor swimming pool, soccer fields, courts, a running track, a lagoon, varied greenery and a picturesque stone bridge. Chicago's 2016 Olympic bid included cycling competitions in a velodrome and a BMX course to be held there. Since 2015, the park has been home to Chicago's popular Riot Fest.

Residents of Chicago's west side take great pride in this natural wonder and community treasure all year long. Notable history has been and will continue to be made in Douglass Park. LIVING INTO THE VISION: Three Evenings of Prayer, Song, and Reflection Radical Inclusivity: A Reflection led by Rabbi Chava Bahle, Exquisite Worship: A Reflection led by Kate Williams, & Transformative Kinship: A reflection led by Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III On Pentecost Sunday 2020, Old St. Patrick’s articulated a shared vision for the future of our church. We are honored that three leading voices, familiar with Old St. Patrick’s but rooted in their own religious traditions, accepted our invitation to share their wisdom with us. We looked to use these evenings to deepen our understanding and commitment to the vision. Thank you so much for joining us for this series. They are all available for rewatching and sharing at oldstpats.org/vision.

Funding for this program and other At the Crossroads Lectures is provided by a generous gift from Richard and Ann Carr.

As I take up a Lenten Journey this week I begin by reflecting on God’s Love for me personally. We all long to feel that we are cherished unconditionally by the Spirit of Love. We all need to know that we are valued not based on what we do, but because we are created in the image of God, but this takes courage.

In today’s Gospel, Mark is trying to make the point that Jesus was not afraid to meet people where they were and enter the chaos and intimacy needed for their healing. And in this story we meet a wounded man, with a bad condition (leprosy), are, is deeply moved and is compelled to touch us that we choosing a courageous conviction, that Jesus could make might share a holy abundant Love with the world. Being held him whole. The wounded man trusted that by putting his by God may seem like a foreign concept to many of us, but if life in God’s hands he would be healed. Jesus encountered more of us were experiencing the loving comfort, peace, and this man, and this man encountered Jesus; and out of that healing of God on a consistent basis, perhaps the times we are encounter something wondrous and holy happened. I have living in would be a little less turbulent, or at least, our own been reflecting on this week’s Gospel story as a love story. In hearts might be more consumed with the peace of God and today’s parable the Leper chose Jesus and Jesus chooses the faith in God through the tumultuous times we are living in. Leper. We will not be marked in belonging that declares I love you even on the days when the traditional ways we have in past years or gather together we are not very lovable. Marriage demands that we grow in in the manner we long to gather. But as a domestic church patience, in self-sacrifice, in simple gratitude, in true humility, we are offered an invitation to be marked and touch the in generous forgiveness, in real sorrow and in genuine passion Divine. Love, then, is a response to the invitation of God’s for one another. This covenant mirrors God’s love for us for presence already with us. Rest in it. Be assured of it. Count true love always takes us beyond ourselves. on it. This week lets us all find time to celebrate Love and remember those in our lives who have touched our lives with I take great comfort that God’s great love is without unconditional Love. The main teaching of the Bible is that our reservation. Jesus understood unconditional love. I have witnessed miraculous encounters of self- this vision of a world where we are all truly loved and in this giving love in this community of believers as they care for their together. I pray that we will envision love as Saint Paul did: parents who need more help, or for the needs of an ill child “Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or spouse, or volunteer to help a neighbor or relative. You’ve heard us say it again and again… and never has it been more apparent: your commitment to Sunday Giving truly sustains us. It funds the day-to-life life of Old St. Pat’s — a life that, despite our inability to safely gather in large groups — is more vibrant than ever before!

Your generous support — your expression of your gratitude for God’s gifts to you — ensure we can continue to bring livestream mass to thousands each Sunday and throughout the week, while welcoming safe numbers of people into our pews. Your support ensures we can build our faith community through sacramental preparation and celebration; through spiritual direction, faith formation, and education of our members and friends, both young and old. Your support ensures our Pastoral Care and Ministry of Care can walk with the many, many people who are hurting right now due to illness, loneliness, and grief. And your generosity helps us work toward true kinship and justice throughout our city, through the North Lawndale Kinship Initiative, our Immigrant & Refugee Ministry, and so many other social justice and outreach ministries.

We are grateful you have committed to contributing a share of your resources — with gratitude and generosity — in support of the mission of Old St. Pat’s. For our part, we pledge to responsibly and transparently steward our resumes in the spirit of our shared Catholic faith. COME, FOLLOW ME… Text to Give

The Annual Catholic Appeal offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world.” This is especially important during these trying and challenging times. Many of our neighboring parishes are affected financially by the pandemic, and we encourage giving at all levels to support this initiative.

When we financially support the work of our parish, our archdiocese, and the throughout the world, we experience a feeling of deep gratitude, especially when we contemplate God’s many gifts to us personally. By sharing our wealth through gifts to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal, we demonstrate our commitment to the Church and each other. Please visit annualcatholicappeal.com to donate.

A FAITH JOURNEY February 17-20, Lent Begins

Ash Wednesday. Begin this Lent with ashes and fasting for the social and personal sins that deny dignity to immigrants. If we are to be “ambassadors of Christ” we must “…be reconciled to God.” [See 2 Cor 5:20-6:2] Thursday. In accepting the cross, we must “heed God’s voice” and “walk in God’s ways”. [See Dt 30: 15-20] Use this time to listen to God’s voice through the Pope’s document Fratelli tutti – Justice for Immigrants Friday. “I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners.” [See Lk 5:27 - 32] Consider that to eliminate the injustices oppressing immigrants, we must first eliminate the injustice in our own hearts.

If you are interested in supporting our efforts as a volunteer or have any ideas or questions, please contact Kayla Jackson at [email protected] for more information. In considering the Aramaic words of Jesus, taken from the Bible used by all present-day Aramaic Christians, we can enter his familiar and treasured words in a deeper way and experience them more directly. The sacred sound of his Aramaic words put to simple chants and accompanied by English translations become a spiritual practice that reveals authentic meanings missed by more familiar translations. A First Friday Video Conversation Friday, March 5 | 12 Noon This is a Free Virtual Event | Registration Required TO REGISTER, GO TO: https://www.firstfridayclubchicago.org/events Link Will Be Sent the Week of March 5th Program Goes Live @ 12 Noon

FROM CARTHAGE TO CARDINAL

It all began when , a fifth grade student at St. Carthage grade school, informed his parish priest that he wanted to be a priest. Told by the priest that he was not even a Catholic, young Wilton Gregory responded with a question that began a most amazing journey: “Then what do I have to do?”

He became a Catholic. He went to the seminary for 12 years. He made a stop as a deacon in Park Ridge. He was ordained a priest. He served in Glenview. He then lived in Rome earning his doctoral degree. Upon his return, he was a professor at the seminary from which he was ordained. He was ordained a bishop for the Archdiocese of Chicago. A few years after that, he became Bishop of Belleville, . He was elected by his brother bishops to be President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. He was called to serve as Archbishop of Atlanta, Georgia, and currently he serves as Archbishop of Washington, D.C. In November 2020 Pope Francis elevated Archbishop Wilton Daniel Gregory to the College of Cardinals, the highest rank in the Catholic Church, after the Pope.

Not a bad journey for a kid from the Englewood community on the South Side of Chicago! The First Friday Club has invited Cardinal Gregory to join us on March 5th at noon to reflect, reminisce, and offer his insights on key moments and highlights of his remarkable journey from a grade school in Chicago to a College of Cardinals.
