Fishermen village Burgas Only 16 km away from Burgas there is a strange village, which can surprise, charm and repel you at the same time. It will surprise you that this is a less popular even almost unknown destination to people out- side Burgas. It’s charming because a place by the sea with fishing boats and lots of colors could not help but to capture your heart. The fishing houses or rather the barracks are built of secondary raw materials and waste, old wagons, rusty sheets and cracked canvases and vinyls. This, however, creates a strange atmosphere. The chaotic mixture of colors and shapes can make you confused, but in a charming way. On one hand, you feel sad because of the indigence in which the fishermen obviously live. On the other hand, such a place could be much more beautiful and organized and it could be turned into an interesting and colorful tourist attraction. The fishermen village of Burgas (known for the locals as “Chengene skele”) can be reached in about 20 minutes by car from the center of Burgas. The turn-off is about one kilometer before the road to Rosenets Park, on the way to Sozopol. In fact, the settlement has two canals on both sides of which there are about a hundred houses. Another row of houses is situated on the beach, opening a splendid panoramic view to Burgas. In the center of the village, 10 meters away from the entrance, there is also a restaurant-club “Morski sgovor” which may transalted as “Seaside agreement”. In fact, this tiny place offers fresh fish and fish soup, prepared and cooked by original fishermen recipes. There is also grilled meat in the menu of course, but to go to such a place and order a pork steak makes no sense to me. The spot is a very good suggestion for a leisure lunch on the weekends or evening escape from the city hassel during the summer.

AQUAE CALIDAE Aquae Calidae is an ancient city on the territory of Burgas. According to historical data, the first Roman Bath here was built during the rule of Emperor Trayan in 2nd century. The SPA baths were visited by many of the great rulers, among which the Bulgarian Khan Tervel and Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The digs at Aquae Calidae in the last few years brought us interesting findings – the city wall and its north gate. A unique for its time heating system was also found with special clay pipes. Local cuisine in Bulgaria is a colorful mix of oriental and Balkan dishes. Bulgarian cuisine consists of plenty of fresh vegetables, eaten raw, roasted or stewed with meat in terra-cotta pots, lots of garlic, onions, oil and mild spices. Some of the staples of Bulgarian food you could find also in Turkey, Greece or Serbia, but the Bulgarian version of each of those has its own local taste because of the flavors that are used here. While the shopska salad, the banitsa and the tarator get an enthusiastic welcome, the boza (a drink made of fermented millet) and the tripe soup don’t have a chance. You will find some traditional Bulgarian dishes, listed below which are worth trying.

Salads Shopska salata is obligatory appetizer (meze) while drinking rakia. The combination of chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and peppers with grated Bulgarian white cheese on top is simple but delicious. Soups Shkembe chorba is a must for everyone who feels more adventurous. This is a tripe soup with garlic, vinegar and generously spiced, quite tasty if you can bring yourself to try it. For Bulgarians it is known also as a hangover remedy because of its unique “power” to make you sober. Tarator is cold yogurt-based soup made from cucumbers, garlic, dill and walnuts. This dish is a perfect introduction to the Bulgarian yoghurt well-known worldwide for its health benefits. Bob chorba – traditional bean soup made from dry beans, onions, tomatoes, carrots and dzhodzen (spearmint). Meat Dishes Kavarma, also called kavarma kebap is a Bulgarian slow-cooked stew, typically prepared with meat and vegetables. It is usually served in individual pots (gyuveche). Kebaptcheta –sausage shaped usually minced meat which is grilled. It is usually made from pork meat and it is spiced with black pepper and cumin. Kyufteta – spicy meat balls Vegetarian Dishes Chushki byurek – fried peppers stuffed with egg and cheese. Sirene po shopski – white cheese, egg, tomatoes and peppers baked in a pot (gyuveche). Breakfast snacks Banitsa is the usual breakfast for every Bulgarian and it can be found on every corner in the local bakeries. This is filo dough pastry filled with white cheese. International Folklore Festival 2017 The forty-fifth edition of the the International Folklore Festival will be held from 21st to 25th of August 2017.

The International Folklore Festival is organized by the Municipality of Burgas under the title: “To preserve the legacy of our ancestors and pass it to your children!” Having started as Balkan feast for national songs and dances in 1965 for a short time the festival becomes a significant international event for the admirers of folk art. The renewed cultural center comprises various in size and shape modernly equipped halls, located on different levels. Found in 1912, the Regional Historical Museum (RHM) in Burgas is the biggest museum in southeast Bulgaria. Until 1946 it was a private archaeological museum, but after that year was declared a People’s Museum of Burgas. In the recent years RHM is an active cultural and scientific institution which is a network comprising four major museum exhibitions: Archeological, Ethnographic, Historical and Nature&Science Exhibitions. They all are situated in four separate buildings in the city center. This year, from June 4, the museum offers all interested in the Bulgarian tradition to join in this year’s ethnographic workshop at Brakalov’s house (Burgas, 69 Slavyanska St). The participation in these ethnographic workshops will bring you close to the Bulgarian folk culture, to the games and handicrafts of Bulgarian ancestors: weaving on a tile or on a vertical loom, making rag dolls, pompons, tassels, necklaces and woven flowers, crochet and Bulgarian embroidery, sewing and decorating small bags.
