From our home to yours this High Holiday season.

This year has presented the most uncertain and difficult of times. As we welcome in the new year, we are reminded, now more than ever, of our commitment to be here for those who have found themselves in challenging circumstances and of our deepest gratitude to those whose generosity has inspired and impacted our community.

Looking to the future, whether caring for people in need in times of crisis, or nurturing and sustaining Jewish identity for future generations, we know that together, we will fill the year with hope, meaning and purpose. May this new year bring you peace, good health and blessings. As always, the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas is Here For You. Here For Good. Shanah Tovah! Happy New Year! During an online Town Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 2, new leaders of the Young Adult Division (YAD) of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas proposed a plan for restructuring its program to increase involvement and encourage retention. One of the most notable changes will be redefining groups within YAD. Rather than using age, YAD will define members by their demographic life stages: early career, established career, young and married couples and young families. About 7% of YAD constituents are in the early career category and 34% are in the established career category while young married couples and young families make up 29% and 30% respectively. “It’s important to notice that our early career demographic is low,” Austin Pecora, YAD gift chair, said. “And that’s likely because our early career demographic is more likely to give their time and participate in events, rather than commit financially with a big gift.” These demographics have different needs when it comes to programming, and financially are contributing at different levels. Something common with most categories, though, is that they want to see that their money goes to something tangible, rather than a blanket donation to the Federation itself. “Millennials are going to say, ‘The Federation raises millions of dollars. They’re not going to miss my $18. I’ll just go to Starbucks or go get a drink; I’ll give it to another charity that I saw pop up that looks interesting,’” YAD Vice Chair Brett Steiger said. Seeing where the money is going makes young adults more willing to donate. “They can say, ‘Oh wow, that $18 can help feed a family at Jewish Family Service. It can help with counseling or emergency relief if a tornado hits us again,’” Steiger said. “It makes them feel like $18 is not just going to a pot of money that no one knows, that they’ll never really understand or see again.” 8 | September 24, 2020 AROUND THE TOWN JFS Senior Program keeps dishing up smiles

Each day is sacred, every action counts

By Sheri Allen This year, I am struck by the relevancy and power of the Unetana Tokef prayer, which outlines the possible fates that may or may not await us in the new year. COVID-19 has taken the lives of more than 200,000 people in this country alone. And I’m sure not one of them would’ve imagined that they would succumb to a disease that, just a year ago, none of us had ever even heard of. This pandemic has changed our lives, and how we live them, forever. It’s also, hopefully, led us to a greater appreciation of blessings that we often take for granted, and reminded ourselves of how fragile, how sacred, each day is. Just the simple act of breathing comfortably is a reason to give thanks. My days in isolation have been transformative in other ways. I, along with the rest of the world, have witnessed shocking acts of inhumanity and injustice. And I’ve had to admit and own my own complicity by not actively speaking out against them. Until now. This is where teshuvah comes in. Acknowledging our missteps, our missed opportunities to help those who have been calling out for support, we can now choose a different path. We can take action to help make life more equitable, just, and safe for every human being. We can all help to “avert the severe decree” for each other. Rabbi Andrew M. Paley

Ever hopeful, ever energized

By Andrew M. Paley As we wish each other a Shanah Tovah, a good year, that will hopefully unfold for us, never could we have imagined how much we needed shalom in our world, than we have seen over the past nine months. The pandemic has left illness and devastation in its wake, disrupting lifecycle events, schools, and our ability to be present for others in the way it is so needed. The partisan divides in our country seem worse than before; civic unrest has spread throughout the country. The word “normal” is now really hard to define. This time is hard to define. And yet, I remain ever hopeful and energized by what I have witnessed in and among these difficult times: acts of courage, bravery, love, kindness and caring in more ways than I can count. 14 | September 24, 2020 REMEMBERING RBG From camp ‘rabbi’ to pursuing justice: How Judaism animated Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s life

During the pandemic itself, the Conservative movement has adopted some new rabbinic decisions, called teshuvot, to adapt Jewish practice to a socially distanced world. In March, the Conservative movement’s Committee on Jewish Laws and Standards ruled that services requiring a minyan, or a quorum of 10 adults, could be held over video conferencing in a moment of crisis. In May, the committee ruled that video conferencing could be used for Shabbat and holiday services when electronic devices would generally not be used. Conservative rabbis and congregants even worked with Zoom to make sure streaming would be possible without requiring the violation of other prohibitions.
