Hello, Lincoln Junior High!

Please stand for the pledge. I… jk I’m not Mackinze. This is going to be our last issue, and I’ve had so much fun! Some of my favorite pages from the May issue are “Asking Teachers Weird Ques- tions,” “May Birthdays,” and the “Assistant Editor’s Page;” all by me! Make sure you read some of the other ones too… Ok. Bye.

LJHS Circuit Rider May Issue May Stories

The end of the year is almost here; however, Tyrone is not very happy about it. Why, he’s dreading the last day of school the most. Tyrone will be graduating from 8th grade, and he has a feeling that he might make a scene. They’ve had one rehearsal and he already faint- ed twice. How much worse could it possibly get? The days leading up to graduation Tyrone kept having bad luck. His mom left him at the store, he sat on his sandwich at lunch, and he got his hand stuck in the vending machine. Tyrone grew even more paranoid as the days crept up. What was he going do? Tyrone couldn’t think about it anymore; today was graduation day. He got all dressed up in his best outfit plus some really cool hotdog socks. Nothing was going to stop him from looking good, until Tyrone was walking up onto the stage. He had such sweaty hands, he couldn’t even shake anyone else's. Then, he tripped down the stairs on his way back to his seat. Even though everyone was laughing at him Tyrone felt great. He had walked across the stage and was now a freshman.

LJHS Circuit Rider May. 2018

Mothers all around the world are making their home a better place everyday by just being them. Mothers everyday do daily chores for a child: take out the trash, do their laundry, feed the animal(s), and so much more. We really take our mothers for granted when we take a moment, step back, and realize all that they have done for us. Some children may not be as fortunate to have such an amazing mother like you do. Mothers, from my personal experience, do not want flowers or chocolate for Mother’s Day, they just want to be with you. They just want to spend time with you and be with you on Mother’s Day. Don’t go over to a friend’s house on Mother’s Day, spend time with your mother!

My mom is constantly working hard around the house to make sure that my sister and I have everything we need. Therefore, I think it is a good idea to give back to her and get her a gift to say thank you. Maybe you could take some of my suggested items and do the same. Moms like chocolate. That’s a known thing. So, you could do something creative with it like gluing the chocolate, in the wrapper of course, to kabob/popsicle sticks and sticking it in a block of Styrofoam in a vase to make it look like a bouquet of flow- ers, but only with chocolate. If you like that idea but want to get her flowers too, just buy some cute flowers with her favorite color involved and just stick the sticks with chocolate attached in that. Then, you get to give her two in one. You don’t have to go all out either. Your mom will appreciate anything from you even if it is just worth a couple of dollars. Especially if it is creative. It’s the thought that counts. You could even just do something like giving her the day off. Pick up the house or make her breakfast. Clean up her messes for once instead of the other way around. Just remember not to have an attitude if nothing else.

Closing Eighth Grade Thank You’s

Wow, it’s sad this year has gone by so fast! Now, I don’t mean to be dramatic or anything but this being the last month of school really saddens me. It’s like, there’s only one more month left with all of our teach- ers before I move onto another school! I mean I just got off topic, but I want to just thank my friends for being there for me, Photo Club for bringing me too many memories, Circuit Rider for this awesome opportunity, and, of course, all my teachers (Coach Aliets, Mr. Kavelman, Mr. Lanning, Mr. Jones, Mrs. Workman, Mrs. Ramlow, and Mrs. Sparrow) for getting me where I am today. Not to mention all my sixth and seventh teach- ers! I wish every single student left in LJHS the best of luck and to have fun! I’ll miss you all.

Barbra Streisand’s story is one that young aspiring actors and Broadway stars can look up to. Streisand was born on April 24, 1942, in Williamsburg, Brook- lyn, starting at the bottom of the barrel. Her father died when she was at the age of only 15 months old, so her mother had to work a secretarial job that bare- ly let ends meet. Streisand’s mother, Diana Streisand, remarried in 1949 to a used-car salesman, Louis Kind; Streisand recalls being emotionally abused by him. Her mother was no help either, she constantly reject- ed her dreams by saying she was too unattractive. Streisand never attended college, but she graduated high school at the age of 16, 4th in her class. Strei- sand’s career started at a talent night at a local bar; she was taking acting lessons but had never had a singing lesson. She debuted on the Broadway show, I Can Get it For You Wholesale in 1962; Streisand won the New York Drama Critics Award and received a To- ny nomination. She signed with Columbia Records and released her first album, The Barbra Streisand Al- bum in 1963. Streisand then got her major roll of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl for more than two years. She continued her acting career on countless TV shows and movies; she later founded Barwood Films.

Ice Cream Season

The first ice cream parlor in America was opened in 1776 in New York. Alfred L. Cralle made the first ice cream scoop in 1897. In Cralle’s Ice Cream Scoop 1904 the waffle cone made an appearance at the World’s Fair in St.Louis, Missouri. July was declared national ice cream month in 1984. It’s not July yet, but, in my opinion any month is ice cream month. However, the most ice cream sales occur during the months May to August. Ben & Jer- ry’s being the top selling Ice cream company. Mint Chocolate Chip be- ing the most favorite flavor in Ameri- ca. That’s my personal Favorite, so I’m quite proud. On average a person consumes 48 pints of ice cream a year. May 2018

 The Maracas are the instrument of the month for May.

 In Venezuela, maracas are played by sing- ers as rhythmic accompaniment.

 A legend in West Africa says that the first set of maracas were made by a goddess who sealed white pebbles in a calabash.

 The maracas have three parts: it has the bell in which the sound is made from when it is shaken, gourd, calabash, or leather for the base, and anything inside it that shakes.

 The most used colors for the maracas are green, red, and orange because of its Latin heritage.

“The youngest speaker at the March for Our Lives rally Sat- urday made one of the biggest splashes with an eloquent speech urging the nation not to forgot black women, who are dispropor- tionately represented among the victims of gun violence,” stated The Washington Post. Naomi Wadler, who is a fifth grader, that has shocked the nation. Wadler told The Washington Post, “My speech might not have caused a giant impact on society, but I do hope all the black girls and women realize there’s growing value for them.” A part of her speech was, “I am here to acknowledge and represent the African American girls whose stories don’t make the front of every national newspaper, whose stories don’t lead on the evening news. I represent the African American women who are victims of gun violence, who are simply statistics instead of vibrant, beautiful girls full of poten- tial.”

Ever since cell phones have been around in school, there has been a lot of commotion about cheating. Teachers have also been more strict during class hours and especially during lunch. Do you believe that the rules are getting stronger because of cell phones? I have realized that the rules has changed since last year. The rule that I realized first was the “no pictures at lunch” one. I believe that we should be able to take pictures at lunch. I understand that the purpose of the cell phones is for being able to talk to a parents i.c.e., but I also think that we should be able to take pictures and communicate with our friends, that don't go to our school, during lunch. Everybody knows that every kid uses snapchat as their main social networking system, so in order to snapchat you kind of have to take pictures. In order to communicate with our friends from other schools, taking pictures is necessary. Taking picture at lunch of you and your friends should be aloud. Secondly, I have realized than teachers are getting a lot more strict on where our phones are during class. Last year, in 7th grade, we were allowed to have our phones on our desk, in our binder, in our lap, in our shoe, where ever, as long as we were not on them. This year, we have to have our phones completely put away and out of the sight of the teacher.. Also, last year, we were allowed to leave our cell phones on as long as it was on mute, but this year we are supposed to have them off. Now I say “supposed” because all of us know that not everybody turns their phone off. We should obey the teachers rules of having our phone turned off as long as they let us put our phones where we are comfortable putting them. Lastly, I have realized something new. Teachers are now getting concerned about the bright- ness of our cell phones screens. Some teachers have been talking and worrying about the brightness of our cell phone because they believe we do it so they cant see the screen. I believe that is not the reason students are doing that. Number 1, cell phones are our personally property and if we don't want anyone looking at them, then we don't want anyone looking at them. Number 2, some students do it to preserve their battery, but teachers automatically assuming that we are doing it to hide things is false. Although some students may turn their brightness down so they can do things that teacher won’t allow, but that is not always the case. I believe that they shouldn’t be assuming things and looking over our shoulders during lunch. The rules have been getting more strict. The teachers are enforcing the no cell phones at school rule, where phone are being placed, and the brightness of our cell phones screens. Even though some people may not obey these rules completely, I don’t think that teachers should be this strict.

On March 15, 2018 a pedestrian bridge collapsed in Miami, Florida. After days of digging through 950 tons of steel and concrete, there were only 6 people presumed dead. This bridge is what you call an “instant bridge”, meaning it is built in almost one day. Two days before the bridge collapsed an engineer flagged “cracking.” According to cbsnews.com, “Documents obtained by The Associated Press through a public-records request show that the Florida Department of Transportation in October 2016 ordered Florida International University (FIU) and its contractors to move one of the bridge's main support structures 11 feet north to the edge of a canal, widening the gap between the crossing's end supports and requiring some new structural design.” Due to the missed flag warning, 6 people have died and all thoughts and prayers are out to the victims families.

When I started at LJHS I was insecure and lacked the social skills to make many friends. Throughout my years as a student I would like to say I have grown, both academically and socially. For one, I know how to write and format an essay properly. Many things seemed unimportant at the time, but I wish I would have focused on those things and put forth more effort as a student. I struggled with things and ignored my education. I wish that I could go back and change that; however, I know that I can only learn from these mistakes. Personally, I am not one to spout clichés in the hope that some- one will learn, but just know if you do chose to make the decisions I did, it is hard to reverse those decisions. Looking now, I have friends that I would- n't have imagined ever having and a better under- standing of how things are. I want to thank the teachers who put forth effort in my education when I did not. Trinity

From the time after the tragic event that was the Sandy hook shooting, over 400 people have been shot in over 200 school shootings. There's been 305 school shootings since 2013. If you'd like to see America in a parallel to a country with gun reforms, Australia hasn't has a mass shooting in over 20 years. There has been 19 school shootings in the US 2018 alone.

The most recent shooting a of the time I’m writing this in March, took place at Great Mills High school in Maryland on Tuesday, March 20th. It happened at 7:55 am in the hallway. The shooter stepped into the hallway armed with a handgun and shot a 16 year old girl who he had a past relationship with and a 14 year old boy. At the time they were critically injured , now the 14 year old is in stable health, and the 16 year old has life- threatening injuries. Neither of them have died; however, the shooter was shot and then announced dead at the hospital.

Austin, Texas residents were on high alert after two people had been fatally killed after a suspected bombing in “packages.” Police were on high alert and advising people to call 9-1-1 if you had seen anything suspicious or received anything suspicious. Police were looking for Mark Anthony Conditt as the suspect. Ac- cording to CNN, “Federal search warrants were then used to get the man’s IP address, which showed that he’d been making ‘suspicious’ Google searches.” Conditt went to deliver a explosive package, however he had no idea that he was being video taped by a home security camera. Conditt detonated a explosive in his car which killed him.
