A Salute to Those Who Gave Their All Shane Matzen Hard Court Herald Editor Marquette High School

I consider myself a patriotic person and I certainly believe in supporting our troops but please bear with my title as I zero in on our profession specifically. As yet another season has wound down and we find ourselves in the time it takes a buzzer to ring going from maniacal planners whose every other thought is how to win the next game to being the person in the household who needs to grocery shop, run errands, pick up the kids, etc after school. It’s always sort of a shock to me like going from rolling in the snow into a hot shower. I’d like though to take this spot in cyberspace to honor those who allowed us to do our jobs all winter long….

I’ve mentioned my wife, Tina, on numerous occasions in my writings for not only picking up the slack during the season with the daily business of the house itself but with our sons as well. Her specialty not only includes allowing me to have the time to pursue coaching but more importantly keeps me grounded; that is understanding when I probably go overboard in my pursuit of this sport and helping me find my way back to reality. My sons are great too. I have a sixth and second grader now and they’re really starting to get into sports. ESPN is on in multiple rooms in my house (yes!) and the boys follow the team really intently through the ebbs and flows of the season. Jack and Ross are both excited when we win and wish we would have won when we lost but they both do their part to help me through the tough times. I’m forever grateful to them all for what they do for me.

SIDE STORY: Through all the thanks to my wife and kids though, I thought this was a priceless moment in the midst of our 2008-2009 season. Just a little background….we finished 9-18 this season. That included playing what I would consider a top-5 toughest schedule in Missouri and having almost zero varsity experience returning. We ended up though winning seven of eight games after starting 1-12 and got ourselves into the district championship game…a true testament to hard work, great attitudes and a fitting ending for a great group of guys. In the midst of the winning streak, we found ourselves playing the defending state champs Webster Groves for the third time this year after losing twice before. It was one of those special nights where almost everything went right for us and we walked off the floor a 58-55 winner. Needless to say, it was a highlight for the season. As I was walking out of the empty building with my oldest son Jack with me, I turned to him and said “Jack, that was pretty great wasn’t it?” He replied (no offense to Webster Coach Jay Blossom who I’m sure would say it wasn’t his team’s best game), “Yeah, Dad but I don’t think Webster played very well.” It was a true moment of “keep me in my place” and a story I’m sure I’ll be telling a lot over the years.

I got the idea for this article though in reading a piece by Buster McGowin in the Miller County Autogram newspaper. Buster is a former school administrator back home in Miller County and has been retired for several years. He wrote of his now-deceased friend (and uncle to my wife) Babe Patterson and a hunting dog he had owned for so many years. The dog had no formal training in hunting but was a true natural in every sense of the word. In fact, Buster ended up naming the dog Babe after his friend. Babe (the dog) would jump in the truck and ride everywhere with Buster and would even take off every now and then and hike the mile through the woods to Babe’s house (Buster’s friend) where he’d get a special meal and was always safely driven home back to his new house. As I read about how Buster had to recently put poor Babe down because of old age and ailments that were becoming too much for him and how he missed that unabashed love and affection I got to thinking about how we as coaches get the same from our families. Sometimes, in the worst of situations, they are our island in a storm and our saving grace.

It also didn’t hurt reading Buster’s excellent article to make me think of a new member of our family. We acquired Pierre Laclede Matzen (aka “Pee Wee”) from a local animal shelter last 4

summer. On 27 different evenings this winter, a little white dog met me at the garage door and made sure it didn’t matter if we won or lost. It’s amazing what that face did to my mood walking into the house and getting me through some tough times this winter.

So, take the time now that we’ve hit our offseason (and I’m sure are already thinking about 2009- 10) and thank those close to you that pulled you through. We all need them and they deserve our unending gratitude.

It’s getting closer and closer to “shootout” time this summer where we take our teams away to a site for a day or two to get some good competition in for our kids. I’ve got a couple I’d like to have you take a look at….

The inaugural Show Me State Games-sponsored “Midwest Showcase Shootout” will be held in Columbia this June 12-14. There is a flyer located later on in this newsletter with details. This event is also being run in conjunction with the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association and as a co-sponsor of this event, it behooves our membership to help get this shootout off to a rousing start in this its first year.

Traveling a great distance to play isn’t always the first thing you think about doing in the summer, but we like to take our kids at Marquette to places where we can see some good, different competition and we found a great place last summer. Murray State University in Murray, KY has a two-day event on June 5th and 6th where you’ll get a chance to see the best competition from Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois and Indiana. We were one of three or four teams from Missouri in attendance and I was very pleased with the caliber of teams and the cooperation of the staff at Murray State in keeping with the distance we traversed. The Little Things-“Using Your P.H.D.” By Jason Wolfard Associate Editor Lindbergh High School

Instead of calling each other coach, we can probably call ourselves doctor when we talk to each other. Why you may ask? Well it’s simple. We all have a P.H.D. in basketball. No, we didn’t go to graduate school to get a degree, but all of us have it. First, I have to give credit to Rick Pitino for the inspiration to my article. In his new book that I am reading titled “ Rules…The Art of Success 2.0”, he talks about how to overcome adversity through his own personal failures and triumphs.

Whenever I go to the book store, I always go to the team sports section first and see if there are any new releases from coaches I respect for their success. After only winning one game this year (which didn’t come until the first round of districts), needless to say our program was staring adversity right in the eye when it comes to success. I didn’t hesitate to pick this book up and purchase it in the hopes that it would help me find a way to get our program heading back in the right direction. Heading into just the introduction, I quickly found something I could use and also use for my article this issue.

Back to P.H.D.! Like I said, it is not a degree that we have all earned from a school at a high price. We all have it and we all work toward it on a daily basis. P.H.D. stands for your PASSION, your HUNGER, and your DRIVE. You could probably change it up how you want, but I really like this. Pitino says that he first learned about P.H.D. from a New York stock broker. When asked by Pitino what type of schools he looks to get people from, the broker responded that he doesn’t look at school names. He looks for PHD’s – Poor, Hungry, and Driven people. Pitino later changed poor to passionate because his players that came from underprivileged backgrounds didn’t like to hear the word poor.

My goal for this article is to hopefully get all of you who read to think about your P.H.D. as you head into the off-season. Whether you are trying to bounce back from a single win season, take that next step to being great, or trying to defend that state title, hopefully it will help you in some way.

When I think of passion, I simply think of why I do what I do. I think all of us can agree that we don’t coach high school basketball for the money. Our assistants don’t coach 4:00 freshman basketball games for the money. We all do it because we are passionate about the sport of basketball. We love to see all of our work translate into success with our kids in practice and games, and we all love to see our former players come back and visit and share stories of life lessons they learned through playing basketball. Passion is what gets you through that rough day in the classroom so you can get to the court, what gets you back up when the critics try to cut you down, and what keeps you going when you have gone through 23 straight games without a win! What I have found in my coaching experience (especially this last year) is how to take that passion and somehow let it rub off to my players. After reading the section in Pitino’s book about passion, I started to think back upon this season and wonder simply why I couldn’t get some of my players to be more passionate. Was it because they simply weren’t capable of showing 7

passion? Was it because they got to a point and simply didn’t care because we were losing so much? Was it because I didn’t give enough of my own passion to my players because I was worn down? I’m not sure, maybe a combination of all three and some others. What I do know after reflecting, I think that I may have lost the ability to show my passion. I never lost my passion. I just simply didn’t show it as much as I should have. While I admit it was tough, the lesson I learned is that I have to keep showing passion no matter what kind of adversity comes before us. We are all passionate about coaching, but the thing that takes you to the next level is if you can show that passion. As Pitino says, “…show passion. Find inspiration in the lifelong passion of Billy Graham for the next crusade, of Robert DeNiro for the next acting role, or Joe Paterno for the next football game. Those are all men I admire – the greats who could quit at any time with their legacy secure, but they love what they do too much to walk away. Their passion is fed by an endless hunger.” This off-season, find a way to show your passion that you have and let your hunger feed into it.

A tough thing about having hunger is trying to never be satisfied. I can probably say that all of us have heard it from our players… “Man coach, you just are never satisfied.”! That’s right, passionate coaches are never satisfied and always want more. They have a hunger to always improve and that is what makes them so passionate. I never really thought about the connection between hunger and passion, but now it makes total sense. Just two years ago when I was fortunate enough to have a team that gelled at the right time and made it to Columbia, those kids had a hunger the entire season to achieve their pre-season goal of making it to state. They were never satisfied with their performance. I think that is a quality of many successful teams that achieve their goals – they stay so hungry that they are willing to do whatever it takes to reach their goal. As I take this part of the PHD acronym, my goal is to try and make my players so hungry for success and to turn things around next year that they become passionate. Probably easier said than done. In his book, Pitino also mentions that hunger exists best when the hungry possess some humility. I think that humility is a trait that for some reason doesn’t exist in some high school players today. They think they know it all and at times become what we might consider “uncoachable”. I had some players this year that lacked humility and in turn they never truly accepted coaching. When players can accept coaching and criticism, they open themselves to becoming better players. Pitino says that the problem sometime is that coaches who say that can’t accept coaching and criticism themselves. Finding humility results in finding success most of the time, but the hard part is actually finding it because usually it only happens through experience. Think about it, how many former players have come back to visit with you and the words, “Man I wish I would have listened back then when you said…” come out of their mouth. Why are they saying that now? Pretty simple, they have had more experience and now understand it. It is a tough thing to not only learn but accept as well. During this off- season, work to teach your players how to develop some humility. Make them listen. Try to teach them that listening is learning and how to soak in what they are hearing instead of wondering what is going to be said next. Humility is part of being hungry.

By now, most of us have probably put together some goals for our team for the upcoming off-season and next season. Goals are the start. They allow your passion and hunger to get into full swing to achieve them. Three years ago at our banquet, I wanted to not only celebrate the season but I wanted to put our goal for the upcoming year out there so everyone was focused. At the time, I’m not sure how many were expecting it or even thinking about it. I made it very simple. When everyone arrived at 8

the banquet there were pieces of paper all around the room with the number 32 on them. After dinner, awards, and good-byes to seniors, I talked about the upcoming off-season. It didn’t take long and there wasn’t much explaining to do. I simply told them that our plan was to make sure we work hard enough this off-season to play 32 games next year. That was how many games it would take to reach the Final Four in Columbia. My assistants thought I was crazy and I think some others may have been on the wagon, but it was out there. A goal for us to shoot for. From that point it was my job to make sure we had a drive to achieve that goal. As Pitino says, being driven is being organized. It was my job to figure out when to get back in the gym so my players got their hunger back, what opportunities to play basketball during the off-season would give us the best experience to prepare for the upcoming season, and what things we needed to improve as a team. All of us are driven each day of our lives. We don’t just wake up and see what happens, we have a plan. That is what drive is all about. It is not about the fact that you want to achieve your goal, but you have organized yourself to achieve that goal. Pitino talks about how he organizes himself every day with his notecards that he jots things down on. At the end of the day, he will go back over them and then make a plan to tackle the next day. When he moves out to work on achieving his goals, he always attacks the biggest obstacle first each day. He says that it allows the rest of his day to run smoother. So as all of us prepare to set goals for our teams heading into this off-season, put more into it than just having a goal. Have a plan to achieve that goal. Be driven to do whatever it takes to achieve that success.

Three simple letters – PHD – have never seemed to cover so much information. I know that just learning about this acronym has put some fire back into me to go out and fix the problem after going through a tumultuous season. I hope that those of you that read this can take something from it as you head into this off-season. To sum up, I want to use Pitino’s “Rebound Rules” at the end of his P.H.D. chapter:  Be passionate. Strive to be the best at what you do, no matter what you are doing.  Be hungry. Don’t let the first taste of success spoil your appetite for more. Sustain your hunger over the course of your career.  Be driven. Meticulously organize and aim your drive toward your goals

Remember though that as you apply your PHD that you need to work in some patience as well. Patience is the key to everything. You get the chicken by hatching the egg, not smashing it. Good luck this off-season.

Q&A With the Difference-Makers Gail Jones Jefferson City High School

Gail is a graduate of Eldon High School (Go Mustangs…..sorry readers, editor’s school pride showing through.) and Central Missouri State University. He has spent the past 35+ years teaching and coaching basketball within the Jefferson City Public Schools in various capacities ranging from eighth grade boys, head varsity girls coach and assistant varsity girls. In addition, he played an integral part of the Jays’ athletic successes on the football field and track (27 and 20 years respectively). The 2008-2009 school year marks Gail’s last as he prepares for retirement and in this interview he gives his perspective on not only the changes he’s seen over the years but the similarities and differences he’s dealt with in being a multi-gender coach.

Hard Court Herald: You have been involved in the girls game for a while. Can you expand on the changes the sport has gone through and what has seemed to be an explosion in interest?

Gail Jones: Obviously Title IX had a tremendous impact on the game. It made the possibility for girls to have equal opportunities a reality. With these opportunities came the chance for girls to improve their individual skills, as well as, their team skills. From that, the girl’s game became an avenue for young women to compete at a level never before experienced.

Going from the 6-player girls game to the more recognized 5-player game was a huge change. This helped give future college players the opportunity to develop both offensive and defensive skills, rather than just playing one end of the court.

The women’s size basketball was introduced into play. This made it easier for girls to handle and allowed for better ball skill development. With this skill development, people started realizing that girls could play at a very high level. This created many more opportunities for the girls to develop their skills, especially with the help from many who realized that these young women deserved it. We actually used the men’s ball in many drills so that the girls would feel even more comfortable with a girl’s ball in their hands.

The explosion of interest in the women’s game is the product of the opportunity for the girls to increase their skill level to a point that is more enjoyable to watch. More young 17

girls are getting involved with basketball as they see it as a viable avenue to get a scholarship to college and even maybe go on to a professional career. Television exposure at the high school, college and professional level has certainly given basketball fans the opportunity to get a good look at women’s basketball. Obviously, they like what they see. Legendary coach John Wooden once commented in an ESPN interview, “For the basketball purest, the women’s game is the one to watch”.

HCH: Coaches always comment on their thoughts concerning "I could never possibly coach the boys (and vice versa)." As someone who has had exposure to both, what are issues that you've ran into with each that you may have never dealt with when coaching the other gender and what parts of the game never change regardless of whether you're working with boys and girls?

GJ: There are the obvious physical gender differences and what goes along with each. As a girls coach you have to find different dressing quarters and restroom facilities. You also change your taping and injury treatment procedures with the girls. You also make sure you get clearance before entering the dressing areas. You have to deal with emotions with both genders, but some of the types of emotions and how they are displayed are usually different.

The need for solid fundamental skills, both offensively and defensively, and both individual and team, are integral parts of both the girls and boys games. The need for commitment, dedication, hard work and loyalty are also key components that both genders must have in order to be successful as individuals, as well as, to be a part of a team. I don’t think the need for these qualities should ever change.

As a coach you teach your players. Give them equal opportunities to develop their skills. Above all else, be fair and communicate with them honestly. Gender does not enter into this area of the equation.

HCH: What parts of the high school game (gender notwithstanding) have changed since you first got involved with coaching that you have both enjoyed and regretted taking place?

GJ: On court changes have been the implementation of the 3 point line. I like this addition, especially if we have some players that can hit it. It has added a new dimension to the game and caused some coaches to have to change their defensive philosophy. With the 3 point line, though, I feel there has been a deterioration of the development of the mid-range jump shot. Players are either infatuated with the 3 or taking it all the way to the rim. I feel the mid range jumper is a lost art for many but should be an integral part of a players game whether they are a post or perimeter player. Player placement on the lane is a recent change that I really like, except for the fact that the players on the lane have to wait for the ball to touch rim. I think only the shooter should have to wait while the players on the lane can leave on release. Three officials being used has been good if they are three good officials. However, I do believe using three has diminished the talent pool and caused some good officials to be less effective. Adding another classification has been good for the game and allowed for more teams to be able to advance to state play. Contact time with players has changed tremendously over the years. I have mixed emotions about this area. It is great being able to coach your own players as a team without non-schoolers, but, with that comes the added amount of 18

time players and coaches are putting in. I hope the contact limit and the “Dead Period” will be viable solutions.

HCH: After so many years in the profession, do you have certain memories that stick out as you look back over your career?

GJ: There are a lot of great memories from my coaching tenure. I was able to be a part of six undefeated seasons as the Head Coach of the Simonsen 8th Grade boys teams and able to see many of my players go on to be integral parts of some great Jefferson City Jays high school teams. During the 20 years after making the move to varsity girls, I was fortunate to be a part of 9 District Championships, 6 Quarterfinals, and 3 Final Fours, finishing 2nd twice and 3rd the other. The greatest memories come from the players that made it all possible. Watching them grow as people, as well as players is heart warming. It’s great when they come by and bring up their special memories of when they were a Lady Jay basketball player and share the things that are going on in their lives now. I also get great enjoyment in going and watching our former players display their skills at the next level. We have some players in college at the present that I have not been able to see play, but with my extra time available after retirement, I plan on taking care of that.

HCH: Finally, with your experience you've attained, what advice can you give aspiring coaches who are really desiring to spend their working lives involved with high school coaching?

GJ: The best advice I can give is for them to be prepared to prepare. Prepare themselves as coaches with basketball knowledge and the skills to teach, as well as with motivational skills and good people skills. Prepare to be organized. Pay close attention to detail. Be prepared to prepare your players with both the physical and mental skills they will need to be successful on the court. Prepare them also with skills to be successful citizens, not only in the present, but in the future.

Continue to prepare. Never think you know enough. Talk with other coaches, go to clinics, read literature about the game and continue to learn all you can. Get involved with coaches organizations. Be yourself, not someone else.

And lastly, be prepared to be tugged at by numerous entities for your time. Be prepared to have to be organized, to schedule time for yourself, as well as your family, because if you don’t, all will suffer. They need you and you most certainly need them.

Remember, when preparation meets opportunity, it usually results in success.

Yes, no question….this is a shameless plug by your faithful editor for his team web-site. However, I bring it up to motivate others of you to start your own site. It’s a great way to get publicity for your program in these days of dwindling media coverage. You make connections with your fans and parents and get the word out about all the things you are doing with your program (e.g. camps). For those of you who aren’t web-geeks like me, you can get students from your school involved who are knowledgeable in all things having to do with the web or who are interested in covering your team through writing or possibly photography or film.

Hope you enjoy my site and always feel welcome to ask if you have questions in setting your team’s site up. I would be happy to to the extent I can.

April, 2009

In the fall of 2007, the St. Louis community lost a friend when Christopher J. Stahl passed away of pancreatic cancer at the young age of 43. Not only did we lose a friend, but we lost a fellow basketball official, a fellow parishioner at Seven Holy Founders Catholic Parish in Affton, a fellow coach, a fellow sports fanatic, a gifted musician, a loyal company man, a devoted family man, and one of the best people we have ever known. It was because of this man, and his accomplishments, that we founded Because We Care.

When Chris passed away, he left a wife and five wonderful children, all under the ’ age of 21. Chris was always involved in his children s lives, be it coaching, or spending time with them doing homework, or just being there for them. He dreamed of sending them all to Catholic high schools and to college, and we are here to make that dream a reality.

Because We Care is a non-profit Corporation started to help friends and families of the high school sports community, in times of need. We could not sit back idly and watch as coaches, officials, and their families and friends struggle through the hurdles that life hands out. This was our way of helping. So last year we created the inaugural Chris Stahl Memorial Golf Tournament, and through the success of this tournament, we were able to present Mary and the Stahl children a check for $20,000 for the Stahl Family Trust.

’ The success of last year s tournament relied largely on the generosity of those who chose to participate in the event, and this year will be no different. One way you can help is by considering a gift of sponsorship to this worthwhile event. There are several levels of sponsorship, with no gift being too small. All are outlined in the attached flyer for the golf tournament, to be held at the Crescent Farms Golf Club, on Monday June 22nd, 2009. All sponsors will receive their company logo on all print advertising at the event, your name and logo on a banner to be displayed at the event, as well as verbal mention during the awards portion of the event.

If you have any questions about this event, or are interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact me via phone at (636) 519.0990 (ext 310) or via email at [email protected]. I thank you in advance for your generosity and in helping to make this tournament as successful as we can for the Stahl family.

Warmest Regards,

Jason S. Dohrmann Tournament Chairman

Because We Care was founded to raise money for various charities and foundations created for these specific cases. The first event we planned was a golf tournament, named after Chris, who was our inspiration for this foundation, and it is his family who will hopefully benefit from this day.

It is our hope that in years to come, the tournament that bears Chris’ name will help many more people than just Chris’ family. It is our ultimate intent after the family is fully taken care of, to donate to those in the medical profession fighting this ravishing cancer and stop it before it stops any more people.
