Ramon FOLCH (, 1946) Graduate (1968) and PhD (1976) in Biological Sciences, University of Barcelona

PhD in Biology, sociologist. After several years of academic activity as Professor of Botany at the University of Barcelona, (1968-75), he became director (1975-82) of the Environmental Services of Barcelona Regional Council and the Autonomous Government of Catalonia; later, he directed his activity towards international technical cooperation, the social aspects of ecological issues and environmental scientific communication. In this respect, he has made many contributions to the construction of socio-ecological and sustainable thinking, which is reflected in his bibliography, and to the approach of interests and positions between ecology and the conventional socio- economic sectors. As an environmental consultant, university professor or independent professional, he has carried out activities in a large number of countries, mainly in the Mediterranean, African, American and Southeast Asian countries. For many years he has been a consultant in Environmental Management to UNESCO and member of the UNESCO monitoring committee of the Rio Conference (). He represented on the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research Commission on Organisms of Biology and Systems (Brussels) at the time when Spain became a member of the European Union (then [1986] The European Community). Since 1989 he has been linked to the Latin-American Forum of Environmental Sciences (La Plata, Argentina), of which he is general secretary of the International Advisory Council and Professor of the UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development. Since 1994 he has been the director of his own professional office (ERF - Gestió i Comunicació Ambiental, SL), an environmental projects consultancy and workshop, engaged, particularly, in the fields of territorial communication and management, as well as to project research and scientific publishing.

He is author of an extensive bibliographic and audio-visual body of work that includes around twenty titles (as the sole author or director of a team), more than two hundred articles, various exhibitions and two television series. Among the works directed we should highlight the White Paper on the Management of Nature in the Catalan lands (1976), The Natural History of the Catalan Lands (1983-92, 16 volumes) and Biosphere (1992-98, 11 volumes) and, among those of which he is the individual author, the socio- ecological trilogy On Ecologism and Applied Ecology (1970), On Ecology, Education and Development (1990) and On Environmental Education and Socio-ecology (1993), as well as The Environment, Emotion and Ethics (1998), Dictionary of Socio-ecology (1999) and The Mania for Looking (2000). He directed the 50 part television series Mediterranean (1987-89) and the multi-media exhibitions Beloved Earth (1992) and Two Million Centuries (1998).

- 1 - Educational activities He has carried out his teaching activities and directed degree or doctoral theses in various universities and higher education centres, mainly at the University of Barcelona and the Latin American Forum of Environmental Sciences (FLACAM) - UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development, which covers around thirty university, professional and research centres in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, Cuba, Italy, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela and Chile.

During the transition to democracy, moreover, he assumed various functions of the highest civil responsibility, to the point of acting as the chief clerk of the reinstated parliament of Catalonia (1980).

He has held organisational responsibility in numerous environmental conferences or campaigns, including the Inter-Municipal Conference against the Pollution of the Mediterranean (1980-81). Together with Prof. Jaume Terrades, he conceived and laid down the functional groundwork of the Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF), and he has been a member of its Board of Directors for more than a decade. He played an important role in the reorganisation of the Catalan Institute of Natural History, the highest-standing institutional body among Catalan environmental organisations (founded in 1899).

He has also taken on the creation and curatorship of numerous multi-media exhibitions, including Beloved Earth, devoted to the socio-environmental characteristics and problems of the different biomes of the world (Barcelona'92 Cultural OLYMPIAD, also exhibited in Madrid, Bilbao and Aveiro), and “Two Million Centures” (Lisbon Expo'98), on the dinosaurs discovered in Argentine (Patagonia).
