ESTIMATE DQ’D FROM GOLD CUP SECOND The Queen=s Estimate (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}) has been disqualified from her second-place finish in this year=s G1 Gold Cup as a result of a morphine and oripavine positive related to contaminated feed. Estimate was one of eight horses caught up in Britain=s morphine saga over the summer, with the other six involved in yesterday=s hearing also disqualified. One more case-- that of trainer Eve Houghton-Johnson--is still to be heard. Because of the nature of the source of the morphine, Estimate=s trainer, Sir Michael Stoute, was not penalized, nor were any of the other trainers--Barry and Charlie Hills, Gay Kelleway and Tony Carroll--with horses affected. John Warren, racing manager to The Queen, described the British Horseracing Authority=s investigation as Athorough and fair.@ Cont. p3 IN THIS ISSUE

Shadwell=s Stud Director Richard Lancaster added, "Mukhadram is a Group 1 winner in the UK and has defeated a total of 49 stakes winners to date including 24 individual Group 1 winners. He will also be the first son of Shamardal to stand in the UK, and with his sire experiencing a real purple patch with 20 stakes winners in 2014 alone, Sheikh Hamdan felt now was the right time to retire him to stud. A fee has not yet been set for him, but our intention is to pitch him very fairly to attract the maximum number of mares and give him the best possible start to his stallion career."

Cont. from p1 AFollowing today's meeting of the disciplinary panel of the British Horseracing Authority, we totally accept in full the panel's findings,@ Warren said. "We are grateful to the BHA for its thorough and fair investigation, which concluded that the positive samples from seven horses, including Estimate, were the result of a contaminated batch of feed from an independent supplier. We also welcome the BHA's recognition that the five respective The Queen with Estimate trainers, who include Racing Post Sir Michael Stoute, took all reasonable precautions to avoid breaching the Rules of Racing, and that the accidental administration of a prohibited substance was in no way the fault of those connected to the horses.@ The morphine and oripavine positives are expected to have stemmed from poppy seeds that contaminated a feed product produced by feed company Dodson & Horrell. Barry Hills suggested he could take legal action against the feed suppliers. "I haven't spoken to anyone else, but that would seem to be the sensible thing to do,@ he said. "Owners need compensation for things like transport, and other bits and pieces." Jamie Stier, the BHA=s director of raceday operations and regulation, said, "It was BHA's position in the hearing that the source of the positive samples for morphine and oripavine was a contaminated batch of feed and that in the circumstances the trainers took all reasonable precautions to avoid breaching the Rules of Racing. As such BHA submitted that no penalty should be imposed on the trainers; however, in accordance with the Rules of Racing, the horses involved should be disqualified from the relevant races. The disciplinary panel today agreed this position.@

Cont. Funding still comes largely from owners and breeders with additional financial backing provided by the British Horseracing Authority, Horserace Betting Levy Board, Horse Racing Ireland, Goffs, Tattersalls and DBS. Eligible horses will be able to compete for 460 bonus races for 2-year-olds in Britain and Ireland in 2015, with a planned expansion to 550 races for 2- and 3-year-olds in 2016 once the other two schemes have been fully wound up. In common with BOBIS, there's no limit on the number of bonuses each horse can win and the prizes are paid out on a sliding scale between owner, breeder, trainer, jockey and stable staff. Despite widespread calls for a single scheme, it's fair to say that Plus 10 has not been met with universal approval, and in particular a number of large Irish consignors have not registered their horses in this inaugural year. The three-tier registration process--at foal, yearling and 2-year-old stage, allowing for the fact that a significant number of horses are pinhooked as foals and with the aim of rewarding the owners of winning horses at various stages in their lives--has caused some confusion, while the launch of the scheme so close to the DBS Premier Sales and Silver Sales meant that the logos for eligible horses were unable to be printed in the catalogues. At the recent two-day select section of the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale, horses eligible for Plus 10 races accounted for i2,055,000 of the total aggregate of i7,427,000, but the take-up appears to be higher for the Tattersalls October Sale in Newmarket, with 336 of 472 lots in Book 1 already registered, as well as 531 of 828 Book 2 yearlings and 329 of 590 in Book 3. Plus 10 was also given a significant boost at its launch when it was revealed that Darley had registered more than 300 foals for the scheme. Sheikh Mohammed's bloodstock advisor John Ferguson said at the time, "We believe Plus 10 will positively impact breeders large and small due to the incentive it offers people to invest in British and Irish bloodstock and by rewarding those who opt to race locally. As a mark of our support, Darley has registered 332 foals into the bonus scheme, ensuring our clients have the opportunity to enhance their racing returns." Buyers of yearlings this year should be aware that a Plus 10-eligible horse may have only been signed up for the initial foal stage. Different colored rump stickers at the sales (blue for foal stage and yellow for foal and yearling stage) denote each horse's level of eligibility, and those yearlings currently only eligible to the first stage can be signed up as yearlings by the new owner up to Dec. 15. For those horses whose breeders have already paid ,150 or i187.50 for the initial (foal stage) registration, yearling registration costs ,200 or i250, with a final payment of ,350 or i437.50 required by Mar. 31, 2015.
