Discovery Pack 11-14yrs

This pack will help you find your way around the exhibition, and find out more about the man who was King Richard III.

Be sure to look at all of the exhibits as you walk around Let’s get started…

On the table of achievements are some of the things that Richard did when he was King.

Find out more about each of these from the exhibit, then circle which one you think is the most important:

 Making sure all laws and books were written in English, (not French or Latin).  Making sure all people had a fair trial when they went to court.  Making sure all weights and measures were the same, so that people didn’t get cheated.  Stopped asking for money from people.

Lord Stanley was a powerful man at this time. He had a big army. When Richard III and Henry Tudor were preparing to fight at Bosworth, Stanley had promised to fight for Richard III, but he had also promised to fight for Henry. On the day of the battle, he waited until he could see which side was going to win, then joined them.

 Stanley was married to Henry’s mother,  Richard was Stanley’s King and he had sworn which made him Henry’s stepfather. to obey him.  Henry would reward Stanley with land  Richard had Stanley’s son as a hostage, and and money if he won the battle. said that he would execute him if Stanley did not join his side.

Heraldic badges had different symbols on them, the symbols meant different things. Fish means a true and generous mind, a white star means leadership and excellence. They could also include a motto, Richard’s motto was ‘Loyaulte me lie’ which means ‘Loyalty binds me’

Find the suit of armour

A suit of medieval armour like this would have weighed about 25kg. That’s about as heavy as an 8 year old child or a medium sized dog.

King Richard’s armour at the Battle of Bosworth would have had a crown on the helmet like this one.

Find the CARBON DATING section

Richard III’s remains were carbon dated. This is a way of telling how old something is. Seafood contains more carbon 14 than other food and Richard had been rich enough to afford to eat lots of meat, fish and seafood, which contain protein. Scientists had to take this into account in their results.
