“Why So Serious?” Comics, Film and Politics, Or the Comic Book Film As the Answer to the Question of Identity and Narrative in a Post-9/11 World
ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. The results were analyzed by critically examining the source material, with a cultural criticism emerging regarding the progression of this subgenre of motion pictures as meaningful work. “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Miami University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Communications Mass Communications Area by Kyle Andrew Moody Miami University Oxford, Ohio 2009 Advisor ___________________ Dr. Bruce Drushel Reader ___________________ Dr. Ronald Scott Reader ___________________ Dr. David Sholle TABLE OF CONTENTS ACKNOWLEDGMENTS .......................................................................................................................... Centering on the reminiscences of Rose McNulty, a woman who has spent over fifty years in state institutions, The Secret Scripture is a deeply moving story of love lost and redeemed, against the backdrop of an emerging Irish state in which female sexuality and independence unsettles the colluding patriarchies of church and nationalist politics. Demonstrating Sheridan’s trademark skill with actors, his profound sense of story, and depth of feeling for Irish social history, The Secret Scripture marks a return to personal themes for the writer-director as well as a reunion with producer Noel Pearson, almost a quarter of a century after their breakout success with My Left Foot. -

Munich Abstract This is a review of Munich (2005). This film er view is available in Journal of Religion & Film: https://digitalcommons.unomaha.edu/jrf/vol10/iss1/14 Flato: Munich Steven Spielberg's latest film Munich begins with the kidnapping and murder of eleven athletes and coaches from the Israeli Olympic team by a group of Palestinians in 1972. Spielberg interlaces archival video from the live coverage of the crisis into the movie, culminating in anchorman Jim McKay's disconsolate observation, "They're all gone." This sequence establishes the recruitment of Avner (Eric Bana), a Mossad agent and former bodyguard for Prime Minister Golda Meir, to a covert assassination team that crisscrosses Europe over the span of several years. Avner leads a squad of four, including the hesitant Carl (Ciaran Hines), the callous Steve (Daniel Craig), and the befuddled Robert (Mathieu Kassovitz). This allows Spielberg to explore a variety of responses to the moral issues tied to revenge. Echoing the language we heard from the White House post-9/11, Meir ominously declares that the killing of the Israeli athletes "changes everything,” and throughout Munich there are resonances between the past and present-day. -
Mongrel Media Presents a Film by Adam Elliot
Mongrel Media Presents A Film by Adam Elliot (92 min., Australia, 2009) Distribution Publicity Bonne Smith 1028 Queen Street West Star PR Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M6J 1H6 Tel: 416-488-4436 Tel: 416-516-9775 Fax: 416-516-0651 Fax: 416-488-8438 E-mail: [email protected] E-mail: [email protected] www.mongrelmedia.com High res stills may be downloaded from http://www.mongrelmedia.com/press.html Synopsis The opening night selection of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and in competition at the 2009 Berlin Generation 14plus, MARY AND MAX is a clayography feature film from Academy Award® winning writer/director Adam Elliot and producer Melanie Coombs, featuring the voice talents of Toni Collette, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Barry Humphries and Eric Bana. Spanning 20 years and 2 continents, MARY AND MAX tells of a pen-pal relationship between two very different people: Mary Dinkle (Collette), a chubby, lonely 8-year-old living in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia; and Max Horovitz (Hoffman), a severely obese, 44-year-old Jewish man with Asperger’s Syndrome living in the chaos of New York City. As MARY AND MAX chronicles Mary’s trip from adolescence to adulthood, and Max’s passage from middle to old age, it explores a bond that survives much more than the average friendship’s ups-and-downs. Like Elliot and Coombs’ Oscar® winning animated short HARVIE KRUMPET, MARY AND MAX is both hilarious and poignant as it takes us on a journey that explores friendship, autism, taxidermy, psychiatry, alcoholism, where babies come from, obesity, kleptomania, sexual differences, trust, copulating dogs, religious differences, agoraphobia and many more of life’s surprises. -

The Artist This February 'Love Is in the Air' in the Library. What Better Way To
This February ‘love is in the air’ in the library. What better way to enjoy Valentine’s Day than curled up on your couch watching a movie? From modern favourites to timeless classics, there are countless movies in the romance genre, so here at the Learning Curve we’re here to help you narrow them down. Get ready to laugh, cry, swoon, and everything in between with your favourite hunks, lovers, and heroines. Whether you're taking some ‘me time’ or cuddled up with that special someone, here at the library we have a great selection of DVDs. These can all be found on popular streaming services or borrowed from the library using our Click & Collect Service once lockdown is over. Be sure to have popcorn and tissues at the ready! The Artist Director: Michel Hazanavicius Actors: Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller The Artist is a love letter and homage to classic black-and-white silent films. The film is enormously likable and is anchored by a charming performance from Jean Dujardin, as silent movie star George Valentin. In late-1920s Hollywood, as Valentin wonders if the arrival of talking pictures will cause him to fade into oblivion, he makes an intense connection with Peppy Miller, a young dancer set for a big break. As one career declines, another flourishes, and by channelling elements of A Star Is Born and Singing in the Rain, The Artist tells the engaging story with humour, melodrama, romance, and--most importantly--silence. As wonderful as the performances by Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo (Miller) are, the real star of The Artist is cinematographer Guillaume Schiffman. -
