My Brothers All, When you read this article we will be in the month of June. The crops have been planted and are growing fast, as are the weeds. Like many of you, it was my job as a youngster to keep the weeds out of the garden, corn crop and to- bacco field. Sometimes a chopping hoe was the tool of choice and other times the best medicine for the weeds was to pull them by hand. Reflecting on this time in my life, I now appreciate the history of using the same hoe my father did as a boy, which was used by his father had before him. All members of our family worked hard to plant and then keep clear the crops of weeds (rubbish) and to put food on the table and crops in the barn. We were no different than others in Wolfe County who grew up the same way and when hard times came knocking on a neighbor’s door (as it eventually did for all families) we all pitched in and helped them overcome the hardship. What is the Masonic significance in this you might ask? teaches us to clear the rubbish from our lives, appreciate our Masonic heritage and to assist our brothers, their families and indeed our fellow man. Given the hindsight of sev- Gary C. Brothers, when you first became a Mason, what did you expect to happen? Perhaps there are as many answers to this question as there are Masons. But the answer I want to address is the attitude that something “final” would occur – that we had paid our fees, gotten our dues card, and “become” – and that was that. No more effort was required of us. We’d just sit back and watch and expect all to be revealed to us. Nothing in life is really like that – and certainly not in Masonry. To “become” a Mason is a lifetime pursuit, an active involvement, a commitment, a brotherhood. Our actions and our values should evolve as we learn, experience, assimilate and integrate into a Masonic lifestyle. The old cliché that “you only get out of it what you put into it” doesn’t really get hold of the problem. What I’m thinking of here is “relationship” – to your Lodge, to your Rite, your Brothers, and to the Grand Architect of the Universe. Terms such as “working in the quarry” urge us to give forth an effort in this “team sport” – not just sit on the sidelines as if Masonry was a “spectator sport.” Yet there are all too many that just show up at meetings and for degree work and seldom if ever contribute – other than to offer criticisms like fans fussing at coaches and players from the sidelines! If you find yourself wishing your Masonic experience was more enjoyable – try getting involved and playing a part on the team! I believe we should frequently take stock of our Masonic perspective, and see whether we’re on the team, or just on the sidelines. If you’ve been away for a while – come back! We’d love to see you again! At the Scottish Rite there are so many opportunities to get involved in ways that fit your particular interests. Attend our meetings and get to know your Brothers and play a part. You and we will be glad you did! Fraternally, Randolph Starks, 32 KCCH Secretary/Registrar, Valley of Louisville

These Research Lodges and research groups offer a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Freemason- ry, by listening to knowledgeable guest speakers, researching Masonic topics, and exchanging ideas on Masonry. Your Covington Masonic Library invites small groups to meet at the library and discuss any Ma- sonic subject, with likeminded Brothers. The Library can even furnish your group with research books on every Masonic subject, such as Kentucky Freemasonry, the Knights Templar, esoteric masonry, anti- masonry, masonic charities, philosophy, history, etc. If you are interested in forming a study group, and wish to meet in the Covington Masonic Library, please contact the MLMA at the email listed below. Some popular Masonic books recommended by Library Board Officer W.B. Dan Kemble, Master of Wm O. Ware Lodge of Research, that may be of interest to you include: Observing the Craft – Andrew Hammer, Mindhive Books, 2010. This is a book all Masons should read before becoming one of the principle officers of a Lodge. Hammer’s ultimate message is that Freemasonry is not a casual experience and anything short of serious commitment will result in a mediocre Lodge experience. It stresses the need for high standards in all areas and makes the convincing argument that the totality of the Masonic experience can be found in the Symbolic Lodge. Operative Freemasonry – Kirk C. White, Five Gates Publishing, 2012. The content of this book is equally meaningful to the newly raised Mason or the veteran member. White gives a careful explanation as to the philosophy behind many of our practices and does an outstanding job of clarifying their contemporary relevance. This book is very helpful for a “best practices” approach to Freemasonry. A Pilgrim’s Path – John Robinson, M. Evans & Company, 1993. Robinson’s book does an excellent job of explaining what Freemasonry is not. Written before his initiation as an Entered Apprentice, Robinson debunks many of the criticism about Freemasonry, especially those of religious zealots. By defining what Freemasonry is not, Robinson starts the reader down the path of understanding what Freemasonry actually is. American Freemasons – Mark A. Tabbert, NYU Press, 2006. Using a text book approach, Tabbert has written a complete history of Free- masonry in the United States from its inception to the late 20th century. Filled with facts and photographs, this book is a survey of American Freemasonry and its many appendant bodies. This book is appropriate for Masons of all generations as well as non-Masons who are interested in Freemasonry. For the Good of the Order – John W. Bizzack, CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2013. This book is a thoughtful analysis of the changes in American Freemasonry in the last half of the 20th century and an examination of the context in which those changes occurred. Its central theme is that Freemasons leave Lodges because they find nothing meaningful in their Masonic experience. Bizzack addresses the issue of quality versus quantity and argues quite convincingly that a return to past traditions and practicing traditional Freemasonry offers a viable path to revitalizing Lodges.

All the books listed above are ideal for both, the new or seasoned Mason, however the newer Mason may wish to consider “The Complete Idiots Guide to Freemasonry”, by Brent Morris; “Freemasonry for Dummies”, by Christopher Hodapp; “The Newly Made Mason” by H. L. Haywood; Arturo deHoyos “Is it True What They Say About Freemasonry?”; and “The Builders” written by the Reverend Joseph Fort Newton over 100 years ago, but still relevant to today’s new Mason. Those Masons interested in esoteric Masonry, will be able to find books written by Timothy Hogan, Arthur Waite, W. L. Wilmhurst, Manly P. Hall, and others. Masonic history and philosophy make up a large section of the Library. Books from other states and countries are plentiful. Come and browse! ------What do you think? Your Library has over 3,000 books and magazines available to you!
