32 MARHAM MATTERS ISSUE 5 2019 ‘Deliver Battle Winning Air Power for Current and Future Operations’ SECRET GARDEN MARHAM MATTERS

For many years, the Secret Garden stood neglected; the barren piece of land strewn with Urtica Dioica and self-seeded Acer Pseudoplatanus required care and attention to fulfil so much of what it promised.

The surreptitious SAC ‘Greenfingers’ had for some time pondered over the potential of this forgotten corner of RAF Marham, wondering what wonders hid beneath the matted greenery and remnants of a previous life. Soon enough Greenfingers decided it was time to revive this garden, not just to its former glory but much, much more. Impatiens Wallerianas, delightful Dahlia Pinnatas and aromatic Lilium Asiaticas were acquired to help restore this glory, but the earth was defiant. Compacted from years of neglect and under a jungle of weeds, the ground required a great deal of endeavour to make it habitable for its new guests. After a week of stress and work, Greenfingers had tamed the land and the ground was ready. The long hot Norfolk summer then added pain to the task of watering, but efforts were rewarded. Today, the garden is again thriving, bringing colour and life to a corner of RAF Marham. Flower image by Le Panda at shutterstock.com
