JUNE 8th INDIANAPOLIS (30-27) at PAWTUCKET (27-30) 7:05 pm

Indianapolis Indians RHP Clay Holmes (3-3, 4.31) vs. RHP Teddy Stankiewicz (NR)

What a Weekend at McCoy - The Pawtucket Red Sox (winners of 8 of their last 11 games) and the Indianapolis Indians (winners of 5 straight) meet for the first time this season tonight at 7:05 pm with the opener of an exciting 3-game weekend series at McCoy Stadium. One of the most popular nights on the PawSox schedule will occur tomorrow (Saturday at 6:15 pm) on “Star Wars Night” at McCoy with post-game fireworks set to Star Wars music. A limited amount of general admission tickets remain for tomorrow. And we can’t forget the first Free Youth Clinic of the season that takes place tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon from 2:00 – 3:15 pm for youngsters of all ages on the field at McCoy. The homestand finale will take place on Sunday at 1:35 pm featuring “Bark in the Park” (bring your dog to McCoy) and then post-game “Kids Run the Bases” and a “Father’s Day Catch” on the field.

This Homestand - This 6-game homestand (PawSox are 2-1 thus far after taking 2 of 3 from Louisville this week) is one of two homestands the Sox will have this month. The other is also from a Tuesday – Sunday (June 19-24), but that one will begin with a make-up on June 19 vs. Buffalo (4:35 pm), thus making that a 7-game homestand in 6-days. The PawSox have won 4 of their last 5 games at McCoy after a 5-game home losing streak from May 23-26. Pawtucket is 16-14 at home this season compared to 11-16 on the road.

TV Time - The entire weekend series vs. Indy will be televised… tonight on YurView on COX as well as Worcester Spectrum TV3, and both Saturday & Sunday on myRITV throughout Rhode Island and Bristol County, MA.

Series Business – Yesterday the PawSox completed a series victory over Louisville with a 5-1 win. The Sox have now won 2 of their last 3 series – sweeping a 3-game set in Norfolk from May 29-31 and then taking 2 of 3 from the Bats the past three days here at McCoy. In between the Sox lost 2 of 3 in Durham last weekend. Pawtucket is 6-9-4 in their first 19 series of the season (6 wins, 9 losses, and 4 splits).

Getting in Tune in June – The PawSox have begun June with a 3-3 mark. They are hitting .270 (55-for-204) in the early part of this month with a 2.60 ERA (15 ER in 52 IP). Pawtucket, who finished 11-10 this April and 13-17 this May, had their best month of last season in June going 17-14. They are scheduled to play 29 games in 30 days this June.

Streaky Sox - Recently the PawSox have had a 4-game losing skid from May 16-20, a 5-game losing streak from May 23-26, and a 5- game winning streak from May 27-31. They are presently 8-3 in their last 11 games since May 27. Before that, the Sox had lost 15 of their previous 19 games from May 7-26.

Ten Pinned – PawSox in their last 11 games are 8-3 with a 1.95 ERA (21 ER in 97 IP) – 97 IP, 78 H, 26 R, 21 ER, 23 BB, 88 SO. In the process they have lowered their Team ERA from 3.82 on May 26 to 3.46 (their lowest since May 10 at 3.41).

NEXT ON TAP - The probable pitching match-ups for the remainder of the series vs. Indianapolis:

Sat. 6:15 pm (myRITV) RHP Tyler Eppler (5-2, 3.12) vs. RHP Josh Smith (NR)* Sun. 1:35 pm (myRITV) LHP Brandon Waddell (1-1, 6.14) vs. LHP Josh Smith (1-3, 3.26)*

*I have been known to make many mistakes, but that is not a typo! The Red Sox recently signed a RHP named Josh Smith (released by SeattleTacoma earlier this season) and he has been in extended . He will make his PawSox debut on Saturday. The LHP named Josh Smith will take his turn in the rotation on Sunday. If this continues we will have to remember that the righty Josh Smith will always proceed the lefty Josh Smith!

The probable pitching match-ups for the upcoming series at Syracuse:

Mon. 6:35 pm RHP (3-3, 3.39) vs. RHP Austin Voth (4-3, 4.35) Tues. 6:35 pm TBA or LHP (3-3, 2.56) vs. LHP Tommy Milone (3-4, 5.40) Wed. 6:35 pm TBA or RHP (4-4, 3.53) vs. RHP Erick Fedde (2-2, 4.91) – also tonight

Trending – The PawSox (now at 27-30) would pull to within 2-games of .500 with a victory tonight which would mark the closest they have been to .500 since May 16 (17-19). The Sox were a season-low 8-games below .500 on May 26 at 19-27. It was their lowest point since they ended last year with a 67-75 record. On May 6 the Sox had matched their season-high of 3-games over the .500 mark (15-12) from April 28 when they were 11-8. Pawtucket was a season-worst -8½ GB of front-running Lehigh Valley on May 26 and had been in last-place in the IL North for much of the last week of May. The Sox moved into 5th-place on May 31 & June 3 (and were just -4½ GB at that time). They are now tied for 4th-place and -5½ GB of the 1st-place IronPigs in the tight division.

PawSox vs. Indy Last Season – Pawtucket and Indianapolis finished their 2017 season-series tied at 3 victories apiece. The clubs went 1-1 at McCoy Stadium in April of last year and then 2-2 at Indy last July. The teams were scheduled to play a 3-game series in Pawtucket in late April of 2017 during Indy’s only visit to McCoy last season. However, the games on both April 25 & 26 were rained-out. Finally on April 27 they were able to squeeze in a make-up doubleheader with Indy winning the opener, 5-3 in 8-innings before the Sox gained the split with a 4-2 victory in Game 2. The April 26 washout forced a doubleheader at Victory Field in Indianapolis when the clubs met next on July 28 with the PawSox sweeping that twinbill by 5-0 and 2-1 scores. The Indians did bounce back to gain a split of that 4-game set and the 6-game season-series with 5-3 and 3-2 (in 12-innings) victories the next two nights.

Pawtucket Stats vs. Indianapolis Last Year – Pawtucket hit .269 vs. the Indians last season with 4 HR. Sox pitchers were 3-3 with a 2.77 ERA vs. Indianapolis in 2017 with 6 HRA. The Sox out-scored Indy, 19-16 in the 6 games last year.

Against Indy Recently – Pawtucket and Indy tied last season at 3-3, the Indians rolled in 2016 by a 5-1 margin, while the Sox won in 2015 by a 4-2 count.

The End to a Hectic May - The PawSox finished an extremely busy May with a 13-17 record for the month. The topsy-turvy travel month included four different homestands and four different roadtrips. Pitchers posted a 3.60 ERA in May while batters hit .227 with 22 HR and 97 runs in 30 May games (for an average of 3.2 runs per game). The Sox played 30 games in 31 days in May with just one scheduled off-day (May 17) during the entire month. June will be a bit better with two scheduled off-days (June 4 & 18) and with “only” 29 games in 30 days (including a make-up doubleheader at home vs. Buffalo on June 19 at 4:35 pm).

April Comes up a Winner – The PawSox posted a winning April for the 6th time in the last 8 years as they finished the month with an 11-10 record and in 2nd-place in the IL North (-2 GB of front-running Syracuse at the time). Pawtucket has had just one losing month of April since 2010 and that came last year (10-12). The Sox hit .233 in April with 16 HR in 21 games while pitchers were 11-10 with a 3.51 ERA along with a league-leading 230 in 190 innings.

One and Done – The PawSox are 12-6 in 1-run games this season (.667) – tied with Toledo for the best winning pct. in 1-run affairs in the league.

Throwing Strikes – Pawtucket pitchers are 2nd in the International League with 526 strikeouts. Durham leads with 576 SO. Sox hurlers have posted games of 20 (April 9), 18 (April 20), 15 (twice), 14 (twice), 13, 12 (four times), 11 (three times), and 10 (11 times) this season.

Walk This Way – PawSox batters are next to last in the league with their .234 average, but that is their highest since May 16 at .235. The Sox are 2nd in the IL with 200 walks.

Defensive – Last year the PawSox led the International League with a .987 fielding pct. while making a league-low 64 errors on the season (both new franchise-records). This season the Sox are last in the league with a .975 fielding pct. (49 errors in 1984 total chances) as their 49 errors are most in the IL.

Working Overtime – Buffalo (4-3) and Norfolk (3-4) have played an IL-high seven extra inning games this season followed by the PawSox and others with six. Pawtucket is 5-1 in theirs and has played five overtime games at home (winning 4 of those 5 extra inning games at McCoy). However, the Sox have not been involved in an extra inning game since May 14 (a 6-5, 10-inning win vs. Buffalo).

Blanketed – The PawSox have been shutout a league-high 8 times this season. Last year it took until Game #133 on August 26 before the Sox were shutout for the 8th time (3-0 vs. Lehigh Valley). Pawtucket was blanked 9 times total in 2017. They went 18-9 in shuout games last year. They are 4-8 in shutout games thus far in 2018. The Sox have not been blanked since May 20 (3-0 at Rochester).

A Look Back Before We Go Forth – Pawtucket finished 67-75 last year and in 4th-place in the IL North for the second straight season. They dropped to a season-low 9-games under .500 on August 26 at 62-71. On July 18, 2017 the PawSox were a season-best 6-games over .500 at 50-44. Pawtucket finished 34-36 in games played at McCoy Stadium last season. Thus they finished with just their second losing season at McCoy in the last 8 years. The Sox went 33-39 on the road.

BOSTON RED SOX DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM –

Portland (21-37) – The (AA) lost to Bowie, 7-5 last night. Matt Kent (3-4) suffered the defeat allowing all 7 runs (although only 1 was earned) as the Sea Dogs committed 3 errors behind him – 6 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO. Luke Tendler and had 2 hits apiece. Salem (28-28) – The (A) beat Winston-Salem last night, 7-3. Roldani Baldwin had 2 hits and 3 RBI while added 2 hits including a 2-run HR (#7).
