2 UNITED WAY OF KING COUNTY • 2010 REport To The Community All of us have been touched in some way by the economic downturn. We have people in our lives who have lost their jobs. We have had to deal with rising costs. We have made hard choices. Times are tough and continue to be so. But despite it all, you didn’t give up.

If there is any silver lining to the dark cloud that has hung over us since the recession began, it is this: we have had to turn to each other for support and find strength and resilience as a community. We are learning our neighbors’ names, providing guidance to those who live in uncertainty and looking after those who need us the most. United Way of King County has always been about caring people coming together to help people in need and solve our community’s toughest challenges, and that has never been more evident than now. The typical annual report trumpets the accomplishments of an organization, but that only tells part of the story. United Way of King County is a strong and effective agent for community change because of the support of you—individual donors, companies, volunteers and grantees. It was you who helped neighbors in need put more food on the table. You held food drives for hunger relief organizations, volunteered to deliver groceries to homebound people and served meals to seniors. It was you who helped more people leave homelessness and rebuild their lives. You gave money to keep shelters open for homeless youth and build permanent housing for homeless veterans. It was you who prepared more kids to succeed in school—and in life. You surrounded struggling families with support, showed moms and dads how to help their kids thrive and kept kids safe and healthy. And it was you who volunteered your time and talents. You taught computer classes for seniors. You answered helplines for victims of domestic violence. You mentored youth. Meeting people’s basic needs, welcoming more people home, giving all kids an equal chance to succeed, helping our neighbors in need—it’s all possible because of you. In this year’s annual report, we’re showing how you helped, the people whose lives you touched and how your money was invested. The impulse to do more lives within each of us. Thank you for seizing that opportunity and giving, volunteering and taking action to make King County a better place.

The volunteer also connected her Supporters of the Response for Basic Needs (as of December 10, 2010) to other resources to help her through this difficult time, including low-cost counseling. Parker, Smith & Feek CEO Greg Collins asked his employees to consider increasing their individual gifts by 10 percent and led the way by doing so with the company’s corporate gift. He also took on the personal responsibility of helping United Way of King County as a workplace Ambassador, helping support United Way across other workplaces. The personal appeal and willingness to lead by example paid off, and the workplace campaign that had already been consistently rising each year increased by another 25 percent.
