rr Huron Belle" IN the seventies there were from 1700 to 1800 of these Lake Schooners of various sizes engaged in the Lake trade, carrying coal, ore, grain and general cargo. They were a type built solely for the Lake tracie; practically all of them had center boards. Detailed blueprints by H. W. The Baltimore Clippers were fitted out by private owners, who were granted letters of marque by the government. This gave them the legality of private war vessels acting for the United States. The crews were paid on a percentage basis, from the sale of captured vessels. The vessels on account of their speed and handiness were also used in the slave trade.

FTEil the introduction of iron and steel into shipbuilding, the length and carrying A capacity of the sailing ships were constantly increased in an effort to hold d!eir trade in competition with the steamships, until the extreme length required the addition of the fourth mast, as the drift betwten the three masts was too great. Very few of these four mast are now in use. The better known are those engaged in carrying grain from Australia to Eng· land, making one voyage a year in the so-called "grain race" which has been graphically described in Mr. A. J. Villier's magazine a_~:ticles and books.
