Project Gutenberg is a website that offers over 39,000 free ebooks and digital publications that are compatible with Kindle, Nook, iPad, iPhone, Android, and most other e-reading devices.
How to Download a Free E-book Directly onto Your Device:
1. Go to the internet browser on you device (Kindle, Nook, iPad, etc.) 2. Go to the Project Gutenberg website at http://www.gutenberg.org/ 3. Either type in the title in the “search book catalog” box in the upper left hand corner of the screen or choose “Search Catalog,” “Browse Catalog,” or “Book Categories” link immediately underneath to browse the collection. 4. Once you have found the book you want to read, click on the link and choose the format that is compatible with your device.
*Note* Common device compatibility: Kindle: .MOBI (This is simply labeled as “Kindle” on Project Gutenberg) Nook, iPad, iPhone, and most other tablets: .EPUB Computer or laptop: PDF, HTML (website) When in doubt, choose PDF as most devices can read this format.
5. The book will automatically download to your device. If you are using an e-reader like the Kindle or the Nook, the book will be downloaded to a location separate from your purchased books.
How to Download a Free E-book onto the Computer and Transfer onto an E-reading Device:
1. First download Adobe Digital Editions onto your computer I. Go to http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/ II. Click the “Launch” button on the Adobe Digital Editions Installer III. Follow the directions of the installer 2. Once you have Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer, go to the Project Gutenberg website http://www.gutenberg.org/ on your computer and download the book you want. 3. The file will automatically be sent to Adobe Digital Editions 4. Connect your e-reader to your computer using a USB connection cord (these often come with the device) 5. Adobe Digital Editions will automatically recognize the e-reader 6. Transfer the book by clicking it and dragging it over the e-reader icon within Adobe Digital Editions
