TEAM VALOR COLT COULD 2017 GRADED STAKES: A LITTLE OFF TOP, BUT NO REAL HAIRCUT By T.D. Thornton BE THE >ONE= IN DERBY Despite a forewarning earlier in the year that the American Graded Stakes Committee (AGSC) might start reducing graded stakes designations to bring the amount of elite-ranked races better in line with the continent=s downward-trending foal crops and declining number of overall races, there was no change in the total number of graded stakes when the 11-member AGSC released its 2017 slate Dec. 2. Graded status was awarded to 464 stakes for next year, the exact same number as the committee designated in 2016. And although two well-established stakes on the Triple Crown prep-race trail got downgraded for 2017Cboth the Blue Grass S. at Keeneland Race Course and the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct were dropped from Grade I status to Grade IICthe overall number of Grade I races barely budged, dipping to 107 from 109. SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE ABLE FRIEND HAS TRAINER SINGING HIS PRAISES FOLLOWING TRIAL

AS SEASON WINDS DOWN by Alan Carasso No fewer than eight horses ticketed for the Dec. 11 Longines Hong Kong International Races took part in the first two barrier trials over the Sha Tin all-weather track Friday morning, and a good deal of the focus was on Able Friend (Aus) (Shamardal). Imperious in winning the 2014 G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile, but only third in his title defence last year, the strapping chestnut has had just one run in off an injury-enforced absence and needed to prove that he=d come on for a fourth-place effort in the G2 Jockey Club Sprint Nov. 20. And that he did, to the delight of trainer John Moore. Cont. p4

INDUSTRY FRONT-LINE STAFF CELEBRATED The Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards were held in Moonee Valey Racecourse, Australia on Friday and the big winner of the evening was Jenny Watson who scooped both the Thoroughbred Excellence Award and the Dedication to Breeding Award. Watson has been a stalwart of Armidale Stud in northern Tasmania where she has worked for much of her 40 years in the industry. During her career Watson has also achieved the distinction of breeding dual Group 1 winner Palentino (Aus) (Teofilo {Ire}). As Watson humbly accepted her award she commented, AI find it absolutely amazing that I could receive this just for doing something I love and that I=m passionate about. There are so many good people out there who should be recognised, I=m just thrilled to be one of Palentino | Racing And Sports
