It was designed by prolific Houston architecture firm Lloyd & Morgan in 1952. The building is Houston’s first International Style skyscraper and the first to incorporate cast concrete cantilevered sunshades shielding rows of grouped windows. The asymmetrical building is clad with buff colored brick and has a projecting, concrete sunshade that frames the window walls. The Melrose Building retains a high degree of integrity on the exterior, ground floor lobby and upper floor elevator lobbies. The Melrose Building meets Criteria 1, 4, 5, and 6 for Landmark designation of Section 33-224 of the Houston Historic Preservation Ordinance. HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE Location and Site The Melrose Building is located at 1121 Walker Street in downtown Houston. The property includes only the office tower located on the southeastern corner of Block 94. The block is bounded by Walker Street to the south, San Jacinto Street to the east, Rusk Street to the north, and Fannin Street to the west. The surrounding area is an urban commercial neighborhood with surface parking lots, skyscrapers, and multi-story parking garages typical of downtown Houston.

Or does it explode? ~ Langston Hughes INTRODUCTION How did the Allen brothers’ dream encourage the beginning of the fourth largest city in the United States? When they were unable to secure the land they initially wanted to purchase for their township site, did they defer their dreams, or did they persevere and Houston exploded into the metropolis of today? The proposed theme of this unit is An Economic and Demographic Blueprint of Houston Redesigned. My unit will help teach students about the evolution of Houston, 1836 to present day. The scope of evolution will identify the Allen brothers’ quest for economic development, immigration, dwellings, construction materials, famous houses and buildings, and architects. After examining historical economic situations and why the dream of the Allen brothers was one that was thoughtfully planned out and executed for a variety reasons, students will be responsible for mapping out a redesigned Houston of the future. Will the government building still stay where it was built some 170 years ago, or will students see a need to relocate it? Students will complete a blueprint of Houston in 1836 as drawn by Gail Borden, using AutoCAD and the Sanborn maps. Middle school students will learn about the way Houston developed into a city (through articles and from various sources into the thriving metropolis) it has become today.

It is the most recent in a series of buildings and schemes designed in fashionable styles by well-known architects. All Houston city halls before the present one were located in Market Square, a full block site bounded by Preston and Congress Avenues and Travis and Milam Streets. This block (#34) was laid our on the original 1836 map of Houston as Congress Square where the capitol of the Republic of Texas was r.o l. Houston's second city hall (1872). One o[ Texas'grandest buildings, constructed have been located. only a year later maps show block 34 as Market Square, during the Reconstruction administration o[ T.H. Scanlan' which for almost one hundred years was the center of commercial and public life in Houston. Here in 1840 Thomas Stansbury & Sons received aconrracr to construct a rectangular-shaped, one-story frame building facing Travis Street to house market stalls from which farmers, hunters, fisherman and merchants sold their goods. This building had a dirt aisle through its cenrer and perma- nent canopies supported by simple wood posts.
