Paricharcha

Interactive session was initiated with a welcoming-note by Professor Mritunjay Kumar Singh, Head/CSM, IIT (ISM); the session was anchored by Dr. Govind P. Sharma who expanded as to how did the social forum Upnishdan evolve, what it stands for and how does it endeavor achieving its defined goals. He emphasized upon creating certain reference ‘role models’ that could become the source of inspiration for the common society; IIT (ISM) premises in Dhanbad could play a lead-role in such an endeavor. Dr. Santosh Kumar, an endoscopic General Surgeon from the Asian Dwarkadas Jalan Hospital deliberated on the WHO’ constitutional definition of health being a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. He emphasized upon the current crises of India becoming the ‘world capital’ for all life-style related problems wherein the medical science doesn’t have any plausible solution to offer, and as such it is to be dealt-in through a long process of societal churning, making people aware about the limitation of the medical science, as a discipline, and individual’s abilities to adapt a way of life that is devoid of the life-style related malaise like diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery diseases, stroke, mental ailments, cancer and alike; health education is thus a necessity today! The most common amongst a long list of such problems is that of High Blood Pressure, a layman connotation for Hypertension. Dr. A. K. P. Singh, the octogenarian Cardiologist of the town, with the depth of his professional knowledge and maturity, quite lucidly demystified the state and warned not to depend on the mushroomed growth of quakes sitting over the footpaths with sphygmomanometer and stethoscope, these days, checking up the BP of every passer-by for a fixed sum of amount. He also denounced those doctors who do not take care of, and give cognizance to, the state of pulse movement alongside BP measurement to arrive at a conclusion as to whether one is hypertensive; he declared the relationship of pulse-rate and BP as close as of wife-husband and suggested to always look into it and decide upon with correlation to each other. Dr Singh cited various interesting examples from the patients that he come across in his day-to- day professional life and warned not to take the issues related to one’s blood pressure, whether low or high, lightly; he also suggested to strictly adhere to low-salt, low-fat diet with constant mobility, regular exercise regime and higher happiness quotient to avoid having the problem of Hypertension.

Dr. Sukanti K. Das, Medical Director, Asarfi Hospital explained Cancer to be “abnormal growth of cells” and illustrated as to how to ascertain such a state in different cases. The exact reason being still a mystery life-style, food habit, lack of physical activities, consumption of certain chemical products, radiation and tobacco consumption, besides the genetic factor, have been established as the root causes for different forms of Cancer; as per WHO’ recent reporting even longer usages of cellphones and consumption of plastic-bottles’ containing drinking water are indicated to be Carcinogenic. The main concern, he said, is the way different forms of Cancer are spreading in this country! He emphasized upon mothers’ breast-feeding and regular exercise and essential conduct of the household chores by the pregnant women, besides the necessity of getting oneself regularly checked-up; such periodicity should not go beyond a year, he asserted.

Professor Pramod Pathak, Head, Deptt. of Management Studies, IIT (ISM) spoke on the insurmountably high rising problem of Mental Stress in the modern-days’ life, emphasizing upon the hard-core truth as to how societal aspiration, in recent times, has gone up that is not in consonance with the rise in the level of societal ability. Such a mismatch is the root cause of the problem, wherein the ‘motivational gurus’ of today play a negative role in boosting-up and thereby enhancing the aspirational-level still further. Secondly, he stressed on the fact that the old saying, “little knowledge is dangerous” is taken away by a newly emerged realization that “more knowledge is more dangerous”! A conscious-looking patient today doesn’t believe his consultant doctor’s advice unless being cross-checked up through search-engine like google and being convinced by those whom he perceives to be his nears and dears; the current day temperament is “not believing on anybody”; rather, the current social values insist upon suspecting the intension of everyone else, unless proved wrong. This scenario is just opposite the old and time-tested wisdom that “it is the faith that matters”; Thirdly, many people suffer with a pre-conceived notion of being not well, despite of being all well at his end; not sufficiently rich, despite of his being stinking rich and thereby not happy despite all the logical and rational reasons in and around him to remain happy. And, lastly, he suggested that the remedial measures lie again in the old saying “पेट साफ़, दिल साफ़, दिमाग साफ़”, meaning thereby that one who keep himself free from being constipated and has a clear heart will always attain an un-stressful mind, and will remain happy!

Dr. Vinod K. Pandey, HoD (Medicine), Central Hospital happens to be the most acknowledged General Physician in and around Dhanbad; he was given a subject to speak upon that could only be justified by someone like him with a wider mental horizon, deeper understanding and clarity of thoughts. Establishing such attributes very truly in him, he started his deliberation with quite a rational declaration that “medical science is the most inexact science; in fact, while medicine is science, practicing it is an art!” As in the human life, as a matter of very fundamental principle, 2 + 2 is never 4; rather if it is somewhere nearer 4, it should be considered to be towards perfection; medical discipline, as such, works on the principle of approximation. Secondly, he so rightly clarified that the health is never, and in fact cannot be, addressed by a medical practitioner; he only addresses a disease! In fact, health is maintained by the level of sanitation, quality of air around, effectiveness of waste management, quality of drinking water, quality of social ambience one lives in and an overall level of consciousness one is based upon. As such, if the deptt. of PHED is in a position to supply proper quality water, and people are properly taught to use it after certain simple treatment (like, filtering through a piece of clean cloth and rolling boil for 5mnts.) at their individual household level, all water-borne diseases (most pronounced in India are Cholera, Diarrhea, Giardiasis, Jaundice & Typhoid) can be prevented; on the other hand, mosquito borne diseases such as Malaria & Filariasis too will effectively be addressed in a natural course. By maintaining a cleaner surrounding and with our civic bodies, like Municipal Corporation or/and alike, working efficiently we could get rid of all sanitation related diseases like Dengue, Chickengunia, Kalazar etc. If we are effectively taught to maintain proper personal hygiene, we will so efficiently be able to address water borne diseases, worms’ infestation, common skin ailments etc.

Dr. Pandey reminded of the old values of banking on positive ‘Aachar-Vichar’ and conducive ‘Aahar-vyavhar’ for maintaining good health. He suggested to maintain progressive thought- process, eat truly in line with one’s geo-cultural food habits, avoid refined and processed food and bank more and more on the freshly cooked food, have heavy breakfast (as king), moderate lunch (as prince) and meager dinner (as pauper); develop taste-buds to enjoy lesser salt- and oil- based food and tackle the problem of mental pollution effectively. He described walking as the ‘queen of all exercises’ and suggested to maintain consistency in walking at least 10,000 steps (almost equal to 5-6Kms.) a day. He also advised to do everything in moderation instead of abstaining from doing and/or excessively doing something. One can easily avoid visiting a doctor and remain fit, barring the accidental circumstances, in case he (or she) develops a clear understanding (of all these) and doesn’t compromise over his (or her) action to perform, he re- asserted.

Taking the basic streak of Dr. Pandey’s deliberation ahead, Dr. D P Bhushan, HoD (Orthopedics), PMCH further emphasized over the necessity of a conducive ecological ambience, coupled with community-based societal structure with due regards to cooperative temperament, cohesiveness and comparatively a higher degree of human sensitivity, for maintaining good health. He expressed his concern over the reckless driving speed. He also warned against various forms of wastes which we are creating in the modern times and warned the people to realize and stop digging their own graveyards. The session was ended with a vote of thanks extended by Shri Praveen Kumar, President, Karmajyoti volunteers’ group of CSM, IIT (ISM) with plant saplings gifted to all resource persons along with a note of memorabilia.
