Manuel Pedro Nunes (baritone)

Born in Barreiro , near Lisbon , he started his musical studies at the Academy of Music Lovers in Lisbon , with prof.Albertina Xavier , a former pupil of Viorica Ursuleac and Paul von Schillawsky. He finished the Elementary Course and entered the Lisbon Conservatory of Music in the class of prof. Joana Silva, a former pupil of Elizabeth Grümmer , having finished his degree in Classical Singing with the highest marks. He continued his studies at the Mozarteum , in Salzburg , with porf. Rudolf Knoll , as a grantee of the Culture Ministery and of the Luso-American Foundation . He worked with prof. Vera Rozsa in London , for long periods of time , as a grantee of the Arts Council and of the Alumni Association of the Luso-American Foundation . He attended several "masterclasses" with the following professors : Elizabeth Grümmer and Hugo Diez( Salzburg), Sena Jurinac (Vienna ), Kurt Equiluz ( Vienna and Lisbon) , Eberhardt Wächter (Salzburg) and José van Dam (Brussels) , always with the best results and recommendation letters. He was a laureate at the national competitions of Porto and Tomar , represented Portugal in the Viña del Mar Contest (Chile) , after a world selection , and was sponsored by the National Radio to represent Portugal at the BBC World Contest ( Cardiff ). He was Chairman of the Board of the Alumni Association of the Luso- American Foundation and made several conferences on musical issues at the Foundation and at the Humanities Lisbon University . He created and still directs the “Amar as Artes “ association. Formerly a Chemical Engineer , he attended Classical Philology and Applied Maths , having also developed his linguistic knowledge , actually mastering eight languages. He returned to the Lisbon Music University to finish a Master in Performing Arts ( Lied and Oratorio ) , also with top classification. As a concert singer , he made recitals for the National Radio , the Gulbenkian Foundation , several town halls , the Universities of Aveiro , Lisbon and Braga , the French-Portuguese Institute , several national and private palaces ( Ajuda , Queluz , Foz, Fronteira) , and also for the Luso-American Foundation , having presented Copland’s “Ten old American folk songs “ for the first time in Portugal. He also performed at the EXPO 98 on Portugal’s Day . He entered several projects of music divulgation among children , namely the “Música para Pais e Filhos" at the Belém Cultural Centre and Maria Matos Theatre both in Lisbon . In Salzburg, still as a student, he made recitals at the Mozarteum and attended the Composition Workshop by Alfred Schnittke, singing freshly composed works by young composers. He has often sung as concert soloist with the Symphonic Youth Orchestra in Schubert Masses ( G and A-flat ) , the C Minor Mozart’s Mass and Haydn’s “Die Schöpfung” . He was invited for the Honour Concerts for the composer Tomás del Negro and the tenor Tomás Alcaide . He then sang Rossini’s "Stabat Mater" and “Petite Messe Solennelle” with the Youth Orchestra too , and was invited for the Verdian Gala Concert at the Concert Hall of the University of Lisbon. His true operatic debut – after a semi-staged presentation as Misgir in Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Snow Maiden” – was as Count Almaviva in Mozart’s "Le nozze di Figaro" at the Trindade Theatre , Lisbon , in a production with enormous success. He then sang Rigoletto in Verdi’s "Rigoletto" , at the Camões Theatre , Lisbon . He was engaged for the “Viva Verdi” production , singing excerpts from "" , "Rigoletto" , "Il Trovatore" , "La Traviata" and "" . He sang the integral Schubert Song Cycles and Wolf’s “Italienisches Liederbuch” at Foz Palace ; Händel’s “Messiah” with the Cascais Orchestra , Brahms’s “Liebesliederwälzer” in Queluz Royal Palace and “Schöne Magelonne” at Ajuda Royal Palace , then and Leporello in Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” and

Don Alfonso in “Così fan tutte” all over the country , and was soloist in several concerts with the North Symphony Orchestra. He appears regularly as a recitalist at the Foz , Ajuda , Fronteira , Aciprestes and Queluz palaces , at the Jerónimos Monastery , at the Lisbon and Braga universities , singing all kinds of recital programs . The international debut happened in Marmande , France , singing Berlioz’s “Les nuits d’été “ . The American debut was as High Priest in Saint-Saëns’s “Samson and Delilah” at the Minnesota Summer Arts Festival (Duluth , EUA). He gave a recital and a conference on Wagner in Paris in 2009 and returned in 2010 for further conferences and a recital at Salle Bernard Lazare , including Schumann and Berlioz. He has worked with the following orchestra directors : Christopher Bochmann , Leonardo de Barros , Roberto Pérez , Fernando Fontes , Luís Almeida , António Lourenço, Ferreira Lobo , Nikolay Lalov , Manuel Ivo Cruz, Manuel Teixeira , Pierre Calmelet and Gaetano Collajanni .; with the following pianists : Fernando Fontes , José Bon de Sousa, Francisco Sassetti , Nicholas McNair , Luísa da Gama Santos , Kodo Yamagishi, Eduardo Regula , Vera Prokic , Lucien Luc , Ian Mirtumnikov, Françoise Billoire , Paule Grimaldi , Armando Vidal and Delphine Bardin ; and with the following stage directors : Fernando Serafim , Claudio Hochmann , Gonçalo Portela and Harry van der Meulen. His repertoire comprehends the main concert works for his lyrical baritone as well as the main parts in Italian , French , German and Russian for his vocal category , besides a considerable number of “Lieder” and “Mélodies” from the most diversified musical literatures . The development of his voice brought him to the study of Wagner’s and ’s parts as well as verismo and Verdi mature roles.
