A VERY warm welcome to the 2018 NGL Junior Order of Merit Magazine as we celebrate a successful year for Northamptonshire’s next generation of Golf Club members. With eight Junior Opens, the County Junior Championships, and the Grand Final for the boys and girls to take part in, this season has seen record fields compete in the majority of the events. There are several reasons for this increase in participation, but the better levels of communication throughout the year has definitely been a key factor - something we are all keen to improve further. The new NGL Junior Newsletter has helped, the results service on the NGL website is getting better, while the local newspapers and social media have played their part in spreading the word. Starting with a meeting of all the Junior Open host venues in December, the willingness of all the clubs to work together for the benefit of junior golf in Northants as a whole has also been crucial. With nine-hole competitions taking place at all the Junior Opens for the first time, the new Order of Merits have proved challenging but also very successful. At each event, this new category has given between 11 and 21 young golfers a chance to play competitive golf, some for the first time, at county level. The likes of Charley Hull, Gary Boyd, Meghan MacLaren and Ben Ben Ben Jones all started off in junior golf and, take my word for it, some of these talented boys and girls could well be following in their footsteps shortly too! The success of the Order of Merit is there for everyone to see, but there is still plenty more to come in the future. The 2018 Grand Final was a great event on Wednesday, October 24th as the boys and girls who finished in the top 10 in the Order of Merits competed at Northants County GC. It capped a wonderful year. Thanks for all your help - it is appreciated. NGL Junior Open Co-ordinator Steve Jackson [email protected]

A RECORD field of Northamptonshire boys and girls showed their enthusiasm to play golf as they took part in the opening 2018 NGL Junior Order of Merit event in heavy rain at Collingtree Park GC on Good Friday. With almost 60 Northants youngsters competing in the 18-hole and nine-hole categories, Overstone Park’s Mark Stockdale led the boys net scoring as he finished two ahead of the chasing pack with a net 69. Thomas Sandiford (Northants County) took second spot on countback from gross winner Matthew Green (Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands), who represented Northamptonshire Schools last year. Northampton’s Leah Ribano (net 72) led the girls net scoring by three strokes from Kettering’s Ashleigh Critchley, who compiled the best gross round of 81, and Katie Amos (Northampton). With weather conditions getting worse throughout the day, the younger golfers in the afternoon nine-hole competition were praised for their perseverance, particularly as some of their scores inevitably suffered. Tyler Langwith (Overstone), Jack Meakin (Wellingborough) and Finn Smith (Kettering) carded the best three rounds of 25, 22 and 20 points respectively. Olivia Barby (Wellingborough) was the leading girl as she came in with a tally of 19 points.

CHARLIE Salter (Northants County) and Ashleigh Critchley (Kettering) were crowned Boys and Girls County champions for 2018 respectively at Oundle GC. THE nine-hole comps were for golfers with handicaps above 28 for boys and above 36 for girls. Anyone who played in any nine-hole comp during 2018 could continue to play in these events, and therefore qualify for the Grand Final, even if their handicap moved outside these limits. We don’t penalise anyone for getting their handicaps down! Scoring - 20 points for 1st in Junior Open, 19 for 2nd, 18 for 3rd... 1 point for 20th & below. There was no nine-hole comp in the County Junior Championships. Final Total is the best four Junior Opens. Players who finished in the top 10 qualified for the 2018 NGL Junior Order of Merit Grand Final.

2018 NGL Junior Order of Merit 37 THANKS for playing. Good Luck in 2019!

ENGLAND international Thalia Kirby’s appearance in the Northampton Junior Open in late summer helped increase the number of different players taking part in the eight Junior Opens past the 200-mark for 2018. With Northants golfers making up two thirds of the fields, the boys and girls have relished the opportunity to test their skills against some of the best young golfers from outside the county, whilst making lots of friends in the process. Although the home county have enjoyed plenty of success during this period, inevitably the visiting golfers have also grabbed the plaudits at times. Kirby carded four birdies and an eagle to lead the gross scoring at Northampton, while Beadlow Manor’s Jamie Gibbons lifted the Peterborough Milton gross trophy. Molly Campbell (Beeston Fields) impressed in the nine-hole competitions as she won the girls prizes at Wellingborough and Kingsthorpe, where Lutterworth’s Luke Jackson was successful in the boys nine-holer.
