A conflict, which had begun to appear between the compose r's natura l, but advanced expression, and the Soviet official sanction came to a climax in 1934 wh en he produced his "avant guarde" opera Lady Ma cbeth of Mzensk. He was accuse d of "deliberate musical affectation " and of writing "un Soviet, eccent ric music, founded upon formalistic ideas of bourge ois musical conce ptions." Responding to this official castigation, he wrote a se ries of short, neoclassic, understated works, typical of the Fi ve Pieces on tonight's program.

  • Prefaces to Scalia/Ginsburg: a (Gentle) Parody of Operatic Proportions
WANG, SCALIA/GINSBURG: A (GENTLE) PARODY OF OPERATIC PROPORTIONS, 38 COLUM. J.L. & ARTS 237 (2015) Prefaces to Scalia/Ginsburg: A (Gentle) Parody of Operatic Proportions Preface by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: Scalia/Ginsburg is for me a dream come true. If I could choose the talent I would most like to have, it would be a glorious voice. I would be a great diva, perhaps Renata Tebaldi or Beverly Sills or, in the mezzo range, Marilyn Horne. But my grade school music teacher, with brutal honesty, rated me a sparrow, not a robin. I was told to mouth the words, never to sing them. Even so, I grew up with a passion for opera, though I sing only in the shower, and in my dreams. One fine day, a young composer, librettist and pianist named Derrick Wang approached Justice Scalia and me with a request. While studying Constitutional Law at the University of Maryland Law School, Wang had an operatic idea. The different perspectives of Justices Scalia and Ginsburg on constitutional interpretation, he thought, could be portrayed in song. Wang put his idea to the “will it write” test. He composed a comic opera with an important message brought out in the final duet, “We are different, we are one”—one in our reverence for the Constitution, the U.S. judiciary and the Court on which we serve. Would we listen to some excerpts from the opera, Wang asked, and then tell him whether we thought his work worthy of pursuit and performance? Good readers, as you leaf through the libretto, check some of the many footnotes disclosing Wang’s sources, and imagine me a dazzling diva, I think you will understand why, in answer to Wang’s question, I just said “Yes.” Preface by Justice Antonin Scalia: While Justice Ginsburg is confident that she has achieved her highest and best use as a Supreme Justice, I, alas, have the nagging doubt that I could have been a contendah—for a divus, or whatever a male diva is called.

At the same time, we explore the works of artists who did not retain the renown they enjoyed during their lifetimes and who fell into obscurity. But obscurity is not necessarily forever, and as cycles of taste have changed, these once-forgotten artists and their largely unknown works have re-surfaced to startle us today.

Therefore, I am using this plat- form to address some issues that have come to my attention. Since the cost for out-of-town memberships to our Senior Center went up in January 2020, there have been a few miscon- ceptions that have come to my attention. First and foremost, the one rumor that I would definitely like to address is the story going around that the Prospect Town Council raised the dues of our out-of-town members because they are trying to “get rid” of the non-residents that come here. The story goes that the Town Council is trying to keep our Senior Center strictly for Prospect residents only. Nothing could be further from the truth. I value the out-of-town members who come here. I feel they have contributed significantly to the growth of our Senior Center. Many of these members run programs here and volun- teer in a number of different capacities. They are my lifeline and help me in ways that I could never repay them for. I and the Town Council members would never want to “get rid” of them. I will tell you point blank why the Town Council decided to raise membership dues for out- of-town members.

  • Johnny Cash by Dave Hoekstra Sept
Johnny Cash by Dave Hoekstra Sept. 11, 1988 HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. A slow drive from the new steel-and-glass Nashville airport to the old stone-and-timber House of Cash in Hendersonville absorbs a lot of passionate land. A couple of folks have pulled over to inspect a black honky-tonk piano that has been dumped along the roadway. Cabbie Harold Pylant tells me I am the same age Jesus Christ was when he was crucified. Of course, this is before Pylant hands over a liter bottle of ice water that has been blessed by St. Peter. This is life close to the earth. Johnny Cash has spent most of his 56 years near the earth, spiritually and physically. He was born in a three-room railroad shack in Kingsland, Ark. Father Ray Cash was an indigent farmer who, when unable to live off the black dirt, worked on the railroad, picked cotton, chopped wood and became a hobo laborer. Under a New Deal program, the Cash family moved to a more fertile northeastern Arkansas in 1935, where Johnny began work as a child laborer on his dad's 20-acre cotton farm. By the time he was 14, Johnny Cash was making $2.50 a day as a water boy for work gangs along the Tyronza River. "The hard work on the farm is not anything I've ever missed," Cash admitted in a country conversation at his House of Cash offices here, with Tom T. Hall on the turntable and an autographed picture of Emmylou Harris on the wall.

A nonprofit Humane Society serving Greater Cleveland and Cuyahoga County since 1913. PatterJune 2017 Letter from the CEO pg. 2 Basil: A Tale of Trust Fur-Get-Me-Not Telethon pg. 7 Dick Goddard’s APL Telethon pg. 9 Chi Chi’s tale initially sounds rather sad: The little Min Pin-Chihuahua-Terrier mix was surrendered to the Cleveland APL because her owners, who found her as a stray, decided that she was too much responsibility. But their act of surrendering her to the APL gave her a chance at a new life. And oh, what a life it is! Eric is an actor touring the country with The Phantom of the Opera. He thought carefully about getting a dog, ultimately deciding that a furry friend who could go on tour with him would make life on the road much more pleasant. He researched breeds, and on his days off visited shelters in various cities, looking for the right companion. In June 2016, Eric, whose home is in California, was in Cleveland for a three-week run of Phantom. He decided that the time was right. Eric visited the Cleveland APL on one of his days off. As he walked through the adoption floor, he noticed that all of the dogs were excitedly barking and jumping in Basil with her new dad, Eric. their kennels. Well, all of them except one: Chi Chi. She perked up, came to the front of the kennel to sniff Eric, he recalls, then turned and went back to her bed! Her calm demeanor and independent manner both amused and appealed to Eric.
