Meeting Discussion

• Points from last regional conference were discussed.

• Steve Clark went over the biology working group points. It was noted UCF data indicates more transfer students are interested in research than resident students. Valencia and Seminole State mentioned they both have undergraduate research courses. It was noted by Nancy Browne that she must be reminded to encourage her older, more non-traditional students to socialize with other students to encourage success. Dr. Samsam mentioned the need for students to interact with their professors. Andrew Young suggested the increased interest in research by transfer students could be due to the increased interactions with professors. Francie Chu from Valencia College indicated students really need to work on study skills and need to be assisted by professors in developing those study skills.

• RealizeIt – adaptive learning tool mentioned used at Valencia-West. (Ange Peterson)

• MAPP program demonstration will be discussed at the April 24th 2015 College Access Summit

• Discussions related to student advice to take courses in sequence were conducted. o It was suggested this more difficult with part-time vs. full-time students. o Valencia reps mentioned they offer classes on Saturday or at night. Accommodating these students’ schedules were tossed around. o Bringing high school educators back into the “fold.” • Dr. Samsam discussed a program where high school students take advanced courses for college credit. This may be of some assistance with aligning with high schools. He mentioned there was quite a bit of support for this program. • Nancy Browne suggested teacher institutes for high school teachers to help them in their classes. • The idea of “learning kits” was discussed, developed by high school teacher and a college professor. Many ideas were circulated about how we can more closely align what high school students know with what they need to know. Readiness exams were discussed. Given before the course in order to let your students know what they know. • Action Item – Valencia College will share their assessment test. • Recommended course content was reviewed once again. o Idea of where to put the endocrine system in A & P was brought up again. o Nancy Browne mentioned LSSC A & P instructors integrate discussions of endocrine system into other course material. The problem of where to include this chapter was visited again. o Dr. Samsam mentioned expanding dissemination of curriculum alignment course topics to other schools and high schools (perhaps).

College access summit: April 24th. Ange Peterson will send information to everyone interested in attending.
