Try as we might (and we have not tried overly hard . . .), we have looked for some sort of family/genealogical con- nection between the Davenports and the great Dr. Rush. Sarah Daven- port’s mother, Susannah Tippin Sutter Clark’s (1761-1829) mother was Sarah Rush Tippin of Philadelphia. (Belzer) That’s about all we know. And, for all we know, the Davenports liked the name Benjamin and gave him the mid- dle name after his grandmother’s maid- en name. While a genealogical connec- tion would be fantastic to know, it is equally fine to consider that the Daven- ports may have had a philosophical affinity for Rush and his work and were moved to name their son for a great thinker of something they be- lieved in. So we laugh at alcohol consumption, we laugh and we learn.
