DEVELOPING ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS OF NIGERIAN POPULACE IN A RECESSED ECONOMY: ADULT EDUCATION APPROACH

Gbenro, A.I and Yusuff, Raufu Oloore Department of Adult & Non Formal Education Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo

Abstract

It is a known fact that Nigeria is currently undergoing a serious economic recession which is affecting every facet of life either as individuals or collectively as a nation. The general conventional education has little to do with the current challenges and there is, therefore the dire need of diversifying so as to cushion down the effects of this recession. Entrepreneurship has been identified to play a key role in periods of economic recession and the need to equip Nigerian populace with entrepreneurial skills so as to empower them with relevant knowledge and skills for personal and national development cannot be underestimated. This paper is therefore out to recommend the role of adult education in equipping Nigerians with needed entrepreneurial skills. The paper examined some manifestation of economic recession in Nigeria, the concept of entrepreneur, entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial skills as well as the relevance of the skills. The paper further explained the concept of Adult Education, the types, the objectives as stated in the National policy on education, some of the programmes that can be put up in adult education to equip Nigerian populace and how adult education can be used as a means of equipping Nigerian populace with entrepreneurial skills. The paper finally recommended that Nigerian government should be sensitive to issues pertaining to adult education by developing policies that will favour entrepreneurial skills development and also the release of needed funds to actualize it.
