WWW.MONTEREYHERALD.COM YOUR GUIDE TO THE AT&T PEBBLE BEACH PRO-AM 7 THE PLAYERS VAUGHN TAYLOR DEFENDING CHAMP IS A TRUE CINDERELLA STORY by James Raia

aughn Taylor, the defending AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am titlist, will soon V arrive at the 20-year plateau. His third PGA Tour title oc- curred 11 years after his second win and it further defined a streak-filled career of strong play and missed cuts. Taylor, 40, had his most improbable success last year. The field was the strongest in recent AT&T history. Six of the then top-10 players and 13 of the top-25 in the world competed, including former No. 1 Jordan Spieth and No. 2 Jason Day. Phil Mickelson, the tournament’s four-time winner, played in the event for the 21st time. Brandt Snedeker, victorious in two of the three previous years, and 2014 winner Jimmy Walker, were also in the mix. But the event’s 76th edition progressed as a week of the bizarre. It began with tourna- ment officials devising evacuation plans from the courses for the anticipated arrival of El Nino. But it quickly became a non-issue with ideal temperatures beginning on the Monday practice round and continuing throughout the week. Taylor, who had last played regularly on the PGA Tour in 2012, received an alter- nate’s spot three days before the tournament week. He scored progressively better each round, and his final-round, 7-under 65 at Pebble Beach gave him a 17 under 270 total and a one-stroke win over Mickelson. It was his first PGA Tour win since the 2005 Reno-Tahoe Open, which he also won in 2004. “Coming into Pebble, I didn’t have much status,” Taylor said earlier this season at Sil- verado Resort and Spa in Napa where he finished 15th in the Safeway Open. “Then my world just turned upside down. It took me a while to adjust to life again and golf again. That was a little of it, and then again golf is always an ongoing challenge.” Taylor, who will compete in the AT&T for the ninth time, emerged at the top of the 2016 final-day leaderboard with four straight birdies beginning on the 13th hole. On the 15th, his approach shot hit Matt Jones’ ball and moved within 2 feet of the cup. Taylor’s AT&T title gave his entry into his second Masters in Augusta, Georgia, where he grew up a few long drives from the iconic host course.

88 YOURYOUR GUIDEGUIDE TOTO THETHE AT&TAT&T PEBBLEPEBBLE BEACHBEACH PRO-AMPRO-AM WWW.MONTEREYHERALD.COMWWW.MONTEREYHERALD.COM “It’s been a long time; I didn’t think it was going to happen,” said Taylor, nearing tears in his post AT&T press conference. “I worked so hard and just kept getting knocked down. I just can’t believe it actually happened today.” Despite the stellar field, only Justin Rose (No. 7), playing in the event for the first time, and Patrick Reed (No. 9), finished among the top 10. Reed had a final-round 65, equaling the final round’s lowest, and at 12 under. Rose had five birdies and three bogeys, including on the 18th. He finished with a 69 and also 12 under par. “I just wanted to finish top-10, so I had a place to play next week,” said Taylor, who began the final round trailing Mickelson by six shots. “I was going to drive to (Los Angeles) to a Monday qualifier. I just wanted to take my time, finish in the top 10 and not have to worry about the qualifier.” Taylor’s victory not only marked his return to prominence it was his final re-emergence from near catastrophe. In August 2014, he almost drowned in a single, small-boat accident on the Savannah River. It shed a new perspective on life and the importance of a balance between career and family. “I’m getting older now, and I have a family now,” said Taylor with his signature relaxed demeanor. “Life is a lot different than it used to be. I just enjoy the time with my family; I just try to stay grounded, and I try to stay humble.” As it has often been in his career, Taylor’s stellar play was fleeting. Following the AT&T, he missed five straight cuts. He had only one top-25 finish the rest of the season with a tie for 24th at the Deutsche Bank Championship in September. Taylor’s 2016 season earnings tallied $1.64 million, the fourth-highest since his pro career began in 1999. But $1.26 million was earned at the AT&T, and entering this season, he’d missed 112 cuts in 309 PGA Tour career starts. HOW VAUGHN TAYLOR HAS FARED AT THE PRO-AM “I’m just trying to pick up where I left off; I was playing pretty well there at the end of last season, in the last couple of events,” said Taylor. “Sometimes, things kick in months later. I’m 2016 2015 2013 2012 2011 2009 2005 2004 just working on a few adjustments here and there.”

Mickelson, whose AT&T titles date to 1998, is expected to return for the 23rd time, including the 1996 tournament cancellation. After playing for 20 straight years, he skipped the 2015 event to spend more time with his family. PHIL The one-year hiatus seemed like the right decision. Mickelson had a new swing and an overall improved game. He’d taken an extended break toward the end of the 2015 season and dispatched long-time coach Butch Harmon for Andrew Getson. With Tiger Woods’ still absent, Mickelson began the 2016 season as the winningest active PGA Tour player. And he hoped to match Mark O’Meara with an AT&T tournament-record fifth title. “The charity deck speaks to what this tournament is all about,” said John. “It about raising money for charities. It will be a new opportunity for people to enjoy a gorgeous view and relax in comfort.” Branded literature from various sponsors will be distributed. Spectators watching play on the Shore Course at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club suggested more food options. The result: two foods trucks will be positioned on the corner of Ocean Avenue and 17-Mile Drive, close to where buses deliver spectators. The contract hadn’t been finalized in mid-January, but John hopes the new food options, cur- rently scheduled for Thursday only, will also be offered on Friday and Saturday. Key celebrities will play at MPCC on Thursday. Spyglass Hill Golf Course will retain its same offerings from last year’s tournament. “Nothing’s new at Spyglass,” said John. “What do you do at Spyglass? It’s fantastic.”

WWW.MONTEREYHERALD.COM YOUR GUIDE TO THE AT&T PEBBLE BEACH PRO-AM 29 CHANGING THE RULES THE U.S. OPEN CONTROVERSY MAY HAVE INSPIRED CHANGE by James Raia

split second of globally viewed television last June at the U.S. Open arguably caused as much discussion, confusion, criticism and apologies as the rest of the 2016 sea- A son’s highlights and lowlights combined. The moment occurred in the final round at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. Dustin Johnson, a two-time AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am champion, was leading the tour- nament and he eventually won by three shots over Shane Lowry, Jim Furyk and Scott Piercy. But on the fifth hole green, Johnson’s ball moved slightly as he prepared to putt. Johnson quickly informed officials, and then the confusion began. Network announcers, the viewing public and tournament players were uncertain of a pending decision. The walking official ruled Johnson didn’t cause the ball to move and that a penalty would not be assessed. Johnson continued his round while United States Golf Association (USGA) officials re- viewed video footage of the situation. Johnson was told on the 12th hole he might be assessed a one-stroke penalty, and he eventually received the penalty. But the issue was far from forgotten. Several of golf’s most well-known players, including Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth, stated their protests of the decision on Twitter, summarizing their opinions of the penalty as a “farce” “a joke” and “ri- diculous.” Following his round, Johnson said in his usual calm demeanor: “It doesn’t matter now, and I’m glad it didn’t matter because that would have been bad.” The USGA issued an apology in quick order. But nearly six months later in early December, it joined the Royal and Ancient (R&A) and introduced a new local rule that began January 1. It eliminates the penalty when a golfer accidentally moves a ball or ball marker on the putting green. “For the past several years, as part of the R&A and USGA’s Rules Modernization initiative, we have considered the penalty for a ball that is accidentally moved on the putting green,” David Rickman, executive director of governance at the R&A, said in a press release. “Both rules committees agreed that it needed to be changed and decided that in this par- ticular case it was important to act now, through a Local Rule, rather than wait for the next overall set of revisions to the Rules of Golf.” The USGA only issues a revised edition of the Decisions on the Rules of Golf every four years. A tournament can opt not to abide by local rules, but it’s unlikely. The PGA Tour follows USGA rules and the USGA has adopted the new local rule. Steve John, the AT&T tournament director, confirmed the tournament has adopted the new rule. In its new modified language, the corresponding Rules 18-2, 18-3 and 20-1 now read: “When a player’s ball lies on the putting green, there is no penalty if the ball or ball-marker is accidentally moved by the player, his partner, his opponent, or any of their caddies or equipment. “The moved ball or ball-marker must be replaced as provided in Rules 18-2, 18-3 and 20-1. This Local Rule applies only when the player’s ball or ball-marker lies on the putting greens and any movement is accidental.” In an interview with the Associated Press, Thomas Pagel, the USGA’s senior director for the Rules of Golf and Amateur Status, said a revision of the rule has been discussed for several years. The situation at the 2016 U.S. Open advanced the process. “The Dustin Johnson ruling was the last of many uncomfortable rulings we’ve had with balls or ball markers that moved on a putting green,” Pagel said. “We had identified a solution and language as the broader rules modernization. This motivated us to say it’s in the best interest of the game as opposed to waiting for the next set of revisions.”
