Honghi Tran Summary Dr. Honghi Tran, professor of pulp and paper engineering and director of the Pulp and Paper Centre at the University of Toronto, is an outstanding contributor to the pulp and paper industry. Dr. Tran has acted as a conduit between university research and the practical applications of industry needs; including 55 industrial partners and over 140 university-company partnerships. Honghi founded and led 10 consecutive industrial research symposiums on energy and chemical recovery in the Kraft pulping process. Over 200 of his students (undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral) have gone on to pursue careers in the industry. Dr. Tran is the recipient of numerous awards including the TAPPI Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal (the highest honor given by TAPPI); the John S. Bates Gold Medal (the highest award given by PAPTAC); the Lifetime Achievements and Contributions Award from the International Chemical Recovery conference technical program committee; as well as many other recognitions. Honghi has published nearly 280 conference and journal articles, of which 17 have been awarded "best conference papers". He also holds 8 patents. Professor Tran is known for applying knowledge to increase energy and chemical recovery efficiency. Following are a few examples: 1. The fully expanded sootblower nozzle design now used in over 95% of the world's recovery boilers. 2. Low pressure sootblowing steaming in use in many new recovery boilers. 3. Use of borate autocausting technology. 4. Theory that explains the stabilization of burner operations in the kiln. 5. Fundamental studies on recovery boiler conversion chemistry, Dr Honghi Tran's contributions to the pulp and paper industry are evident in the advancements based on his research, the awards he has received, the students he has mentored, and the partnerships he has developed. .
