Pre-Season Summary Played: 9

Wins: 5 Draws: 0 Losses: 4

Goals For: 12 Goals Against: 16

So, a mixed pre-season overall, but one from which plenty can be learned going into the new season. It is perhaps worth noting that 12 of the 16 goals conceded were in three of the defeats, including one against Peterborough Sports and one against Stamford (a match which saw us finish with nine men). However, we did reach the Hunts FA 125 Premier Cup final, winning our group after beating Biggleswade United, drawing with St. Neots but winning the shoot-out and then beating Eynesbury. Step 3 St. Ives won the other group to also reach the final.

5 History of Yaxley FC (The Cuckoos)

The club was formed in 1900 with the forerunner of today’s club, Yaxley Rovers, being members of the first Peterborough League campaign contested during the 1902/03 season. History up until the Second World War is not well documented and the first instance of a post-war championship came about in 1950/51 when the club won the Peterborough League Division Two. Relegation was just around the corner though, and it was back in Division Three by the end of the 1950’s.

The Club has always played either in or on the fringes of the highest levels of local leagues such as Eastern Counties, Jewson, and Peterborough League. The Cuckoo’s finished as runners-up three seasons in a row, the last of these being enough to see the club promoted to the Premier Division of the Peterborough League. The club’s first taste of Premier Division football came at the start of the 1975/76 season and once again they finished runners-up. The following season they went one better and won the Premier Division title.

The 1983/84 season was a superb one with the first team winning the treble, the Peterborough Premier Division, the Peterborough Senior Cup and the Hunts Senior Cup, and the Reserves winning the Peterborough Division One Championship. The Cuckoos left the Peterborough League at the end of the 1987/88 season and made the step up to the Eastern League at the start of the following season.

1993/94 saw the purchase of the new ground and the facilities to step up to the United Counties League and the 1994/95 season was at that time, probably the most successful in its history. This was the debut season of the ill-fated West Anglian League (amalgamation of the Hunts & East Northants Leagues) and the first team won promotion to the United Counties League after winning the championship. The Reserves also won Division One of the same competition thus emulating the feat of 1984/85. During the close season floodlights were erected and a stand was put up at the Leading Drove ground. The following season saw the Division One championship come to Leading Drove.

The 2002/03 season saw the Reserve and Youth teams win the lion’s share of league and cup silverware whilst Jim Watson took over the management of the First Team making a magnificent charge from the relegation zone of the United Counties League Premiership to finish seventh with 67 points – the club’s highest ever finishing position. The same season saw plans unveiled for new facilities that are part of a five year objective to take the club into the Dr. Martens (or equivalent) league. Plans were also made to incorporate Yaxley Juniors and establish a new Ladies team to assist in creating a community orientated football club.

The ‘03/04, 04/05 and 05/06 seasons have undoubtedly been the clubs most successful ever with the 1st, Reserve, Youth, Ladies and Junior teams all bringing home trophies including at senior level, the prestigious Hinchingbrooke Cup and the UCL League Cup in May 06. The club has maintained FA Charter Club status and was granted planning permission to redevelop the site, improving the facilities (e.g. new clubhouse and additional playing areas) to FA community standard.

The project was severely delayed in 2005 resulting in significant commercial loses due to an access dispute halting the club’s entire development plan. The dispute was finally settled and the project restarted in August ’06.

Season 2008-09 saw the move to more temporary accommodation. The last 3 seasons have been some of the toughest in the clubs history as against the pundit’s opinions; Gary Clipston pulled survival from the jaws of relegation.

6 History of Yaxley FC (The Cuckoos) - Continued

The 2012-13 season saw a total rebuild of the 1st team and players under the management of former Cuckoos player and Reserve Team manager Brett Whaley (assisted by Chris Lenton) and the reinstatement of the clubs Reserve Team acting as a bridge between our flourishing U18’s and 1st Team. The 1st team finished mid-table and were joint winners (along with Royston Town) of The Hinchingbrooke Cup, the reserve team were runners up in the league and the league cup and the U18’s were league champions and league cup winners (comprehensively beating AFC Rushden & Diamonds). All in all, not a bad season.

2013-14 saw the dismantling of the reserve side due to a lack of bodies to manage the team to an acceptable level and a brand new U18’s team coming up from U16’s football – a very tough season ahead. The 1st team finished 6th in the league table—a highly commendable result but the FA and League Cup competitions were massively disappointing although we probably created a couple of new records in the process.

2014-15 saw the Cuckoos enjoy a very good season with an excellent FA Vase run and a 4th position in the league but one of the worst disciplinary records in the club’s history compounded by an embarrassing county cup final display to round off a poor run-in to the end. The surprise of the season was the “shock” departure of Brett Whaley to Wisbech Town having only days before presented his plan and budget for the 2015-16 to the clubs committee which was approved.

2015-16 A new brush and a new era with new manager Ian Benjamin, an ex-professional with massive experience in semi-pro and non-league and a track record of promotion at Step 4 and 5. The biggest change for the club was the new 3G pitch that the club and the community have already benefited from enormously. The club would like to place on public record its deep and sincere appreciation to all those silent partners who have made our dream for growth and sustainability a reality. Ian Benjamin resigned at the beginning of April and the position was filled by the return from Wisbech Town of Brett Whaley.

2016-17 Brett Whaley showed his intent to take the Cuckoos to a higher level of football by strengthening the squad with some impressive experience whilst retaining the vast majority of last season’s players. Last season was a disappointing one for the whole club but that was quickly forgotten. Brett brought back players and a great coaching team. In addition to an impressive 3rd place in the league we also won the UCL KO Cup beating Wisbech Town in a fiercely contested battle.

2017-18 Our new Chairman (Malcolm Clements) officially set the clubs target for promotion and building on the success of last season, started what we all hoped was the next forward step for the Cuckoos. Our local attendances began to swell and also got behind our reformed Reserves. Assistant manager Andy Furnell took over the 1st Team management as Brett Whaley once again left the club, leading the club again to the league cup final (runners up), Hinchingbrooke Cup Final (Winners) AND more importantly to the league title and PROMOTION to the Evo-Stik SOUTHERN LEAGUE.

2018-19 On the back of a tremendous season, the Cuckoos are looking to sustain their rise to step 4, retaining the entire squad from last year plus bolstering in a couple of areas. The Reserve team (led by Lloyd Burton) is looking to improve on a successful last season having finished a solid 6th in the league and winning the UCL Reserve KO cup.

10 Match Report: Yaxley 1-0 Lincoln City XI

The first half was mostly even, with little to separate the sides early on; the quicker decision-making and overall game intelligence of the youthful Lincoln side was generally cancelled out by our team's greater amount of footballing experience. This led to an entertaining albeit largely uneventful half, with only a few chances to speak of and only Lincoln getting any on target.

The second half initially saw Lincoln make a strong start as they quickly began dominating possession, but as they pushed forwards our defence mostly stood firm, and when Lincoln's attackers did break through the finish was usually lacking, with Aaron Butcher barely having a save to make.

At the other end, we had to bide our time and settle for a few half-chances here and there, but as the half progressed and substitutes were made we began to steadily press more and more. Eventually, we got a goal in the 82nd minute: Andre Williams sent a corner into the box and, after a couple of headers and ricochets, Michael Frew was able to poke the ball across the face of goal and in.

So, an entertaining match and constructive learning experience for both sides, despite little in the way of goalmouth action.

20 Editor’s Column - Visit to Holbeach United

For the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round last Saturday, I paid a visit to Holbeach United for their tie against Step 6 Fakenham Town. Naturally, Holbeach went into the game as firm favourites, but I was still curious to see if a shock could occur.

Holbeach immediately started on the front foot with two chances in the opening five minutes of this tie, but it took until the 20th minute for Holbeach’s domination to yield results: a Fakenham corner was cleared and quickly turned into a counter-attack, with a cross-field pass from Ryan Oliver giving Jack Smith the space to shoot from outside the box and score. Things then got worse for the away side when Holbeach doubled their lead on 39 minutes, Spencer Tinkler effortlessly poking a shot under Fakenham keeper Tom Coombe to score.

The second half was almost entirely uneventful, with Holbeach taking their foot off and letting Fakenham grow into the game somewhat. However, even with additional time on the ball, the away side lacked the quality and nous required to break Holbeach down and never truly threatened to get back into the game. At the same time, Holbeach only pushed forward on the counter, but did so half-heartedly and were easily intercepted.

The ground is good for Step 5, with an impressive 200-seater main stand and three areas of covered standing. One of these is directly next to the main stand (pictured middle-right), while the other two are situated behind each goal (both look like the one pictured top-right).

Match Report: Soham Town Rangers 4-3 Yaxley

We made an excellent start to this game, going straight on the offensive and taking the lead after 5 minutes: a ball down the left wing reached Charley Sanders and he outpaced his two markers to break into the box and shoot, slotting his effort under the keeper to score. After this, the rest of the first half was finely poised, with plenty of midfield play for both sides but not much in terms of clear-cut chances: our defence were sweeping up most Soham attacks well, while our attacks fizzled out more often than not. However, a sloppy mistake brought Soham back into the game on the stroke of half-time: a John-Paul Duncliffe pass wasn't strong enough to reach another defender and was pounced upon, with the Soham attack eventually forcing a corner; then, from the corner, no one picked up the run of the number 10 and he was free to head into the net.

Boosted by that first half goal, Soham made a positive start to the first half and took the lead in the 48th minute, with the 11 given space to curve a shot beyond James Blake and in from outside the box. After this, much of the second half saw Soham pressing in numbers, while our defensive solidity and organisation from the first half had largely vanished. This saw Soham dominate proceedings for the next 20 or so minutes, with their 3rd goal coming in the 66th minute: a free kick was floated into the box and one of our defenders accidentally poked it into his own net.

Six minutes later, we pulled one back through Tom Waumsley after some excellent play from Cameron Gow left Sanders free to cross to Waumsley for a tap-in. However, as we continued to push for an equaliser - and in amidst a series of substitutions - we perhaps over-committed and this gave Soham the chance to regain their two-goal cushion in the 82nd minute, albeit in slightly controversial fashion: a winger played a cross into the box that was tapped in, but he and the ball appeared to be behind the touchline as he made the cross. Neither the referee or the linesman were able to spot this though, so the goal stood. Either way, we started to press and attack high again after this, but little came of it until we earned a penalty in the 89th minute, which Phil Stebbing emphatically converted.

28 Match Report: Yaxley Reserves 1-0 ON Chenecks Reserves

This was the 1st time the boys had played together this pre-season, with 1st team call ups and lads away it was always going to be a tough one. Chenecks had won their 1st two games this season so for me they had the advantage.

We played against the wind 1st half which to be fair was bloody strong. The lads seemed to sit in strong with no real threat from Chenecks. The match for sure was a bit scrappy and was waiting to light up. We thought we had taken the lead when Stebbo shot hit under side bar only to come out. HT 0.0

2nd half the young lads kept fighting but with no real football pattern. The game was refereed well in hard conditions. Well done referee. As the game got stretched we thought we had scored !! Only for their lino to call offside still 0.0. Chenecks will be a hard team to beat going forward and love a counter-Attack, two very quick lads up top.

With the game in the balance we produced that moment. A lovely cross found Page. Excellent header 1.0 Yaxley. As the game got into the latter stages Chenecks created the chance of the game, only to put over from 6 yards. We kept truthful and made changes for game time to the young lads. FT 1-0 Yaxley

Wind was awful but we kept positive. Chenecks will beat many teams this season. Two lovely guys in charge and good luck to them. Love a counter attack. Referee was good! And no bookings or that bloody sin-bin rule. Good luck to the Chenecks lads this season.

31 Halesowen Town: History

Halesowen Town is one of the oldest teams in the country and claims to have been formed in 1873 although without much certainty. Local historian Norman Jones wrote “there is evidence which shows that for the first ten years of the team’s existence it was the James Grove Button Factory team and that it adopted the present name in the early 1880’s. The earliest records that have on file relating to Halesowen Town F.C. are dated 1882……

When peacetime returned after World War II, the Club reformed. In season 1951/52 both Birmingham & Worcestershire Senior Cup Finals were reached. In front of a 6,000 crowd at Stourbridge, we lost in the Birmingham final to Brierley Hill Alliance but triumphed over Hednesford in the Worcestershire final, played at Bromsgrove. The same season saw us suffer our worst ever post-war defeat when we travelled to Merthyr Tydfil in the Herefordshire Senior Cup and were soundly beaten 0-9.

1955 brought our first major achievement when we reached the FA Cup Round 1 but lost 2 – 4 at home to Hendon in front of a packed Grove. In March 1955, Ronnie Dugmore notched an incredible 7 goals when we won 10-0 at Dudley in a Birmingham League match. In August 1957, we achieved our highest post-war winning margin when we beat Coventry Amateurs 13-1 in the Birmingham Senior Cup.

The 1970’s brought a period of struggle for The Yeltz. Twice out of 3 successive seasons we finished bottom of the League. At times, the only thing keeping us running was the effort of 'Mr Halesowen Town' - Harry Rudge. Before his untimely death in 1990, 'H' filled every role in the club at one time or other, including player, manager, groundsman, secretary and anything else you can think of.

Then suddenly something strange happened - we got a decent team together and started winning things. Manager Paddy Page assembled a squad of promising youngsters, and in 1982-83 we had an unbelievable year. We won the West Midlands League for the first time, as well as winning the League Cup, but more importantly we reached the final of the FA Vase at Wembley narrowly losing 1-0 to VS Rugby.

Not to worry, two years later we were back at the home of football. This time there was no mistake, as we beat Fleetwood 3-1 in the greatest day in the history of the club. By the next year we were getting a bit blasé about the whole thing, as we once again won the Vase by beating Southall 3-0 in front of over 17,000 people, most of whom had come down from Halesowen.

From 1985 to 1991, Halesowen reached the 1st round of the FA Cup for 7 consecutive years. On 4 occasions we played professional teams, and each time we were unlucky to lose. SOUTHEND beat us 4-1, but were extremely flattered by that scoreline, breaking away in the last five minutes to clinch the game after we had been all over them in the second half. We lost 2-0 to BRENTFORD, again in a very even game. Against CARDIFF CITY, we lost 1-0 to a hotly disputed penalty and were by far the better team, and lost 2-1 to an excellent TRANMERE ROVERS side after taking the lead.

Season 2010/11 saw one of the poorest playing records in the Club's history finishing the season in bottom place, scoring only 24 goals and conceding 107. Shortly after the season ended, the Club was taken over by businessman Steve Lynch. Under the new ownership, season 2011/12 brought an encouraging start with The Yeltz undefeated in the first 5 league games, including a 3-1 home win over eventual champions Bideford. However, September brought early FA Cup exit at Rocester which was soon followed by a morale shattering 4-5 reverse at Wimborne, where a 4-1 lead was squandered in the last half- hour. An October FA Trophy loss at home to Romulus lead on to a bleak winter for Yeltz fans. In the autumn Steve Lynch had formed a management team to run the club on his behalf and under the Chairmanship of club stalwart Colin Brookes and Vice- Chairman John Russell, a lifelong Yeltz fan of 60 years. This brought fruition as the last 3 months of the season progressed, the club's improved off-field organisation led to Manager Shaun Cunnington being able to strengthen his squad. Neil Barnfield served an impressive spell on loan from Leamington while striker Ben Haseley arrived from Heath Hayes and soon won fans over with 10 goals in 17 games.

2013/14 season kicked off with an away win at Lincoln, quickly followed by two successive home defeats within 7 days. All at Halesowen then couldn’t envisage what the rest of the season would bring. Our leading goal scorer from last season Ben Haseley missed 11 games due an eye injury, but on his return against Brigg scored twice. As the season progressed we climbed the league table and went top. This position we help until the final week, with Coalville close behind and a game in hand lost against Gesley, this meant our last game away at Belper was a must win game for us to be crowned league champions. Two goals from Ben Haseley ensured the 3 points that crowned us league champions and promoted to the . The Peter Swales Challenge Trophy was added the following week, with a 3-1 win against Curzon Ashton.John Hill added to his squad two players with league experience, Neil Mackenzie and Iyseden Christie.

Fast forward to 2018 and following Steve Lynch’s FA imposed ban from all football activities Club President and ex Chairman Colin Brookes became the ultimate owner of the club with his daughter and chair Karen Brookes and Keith McKenna becoming Directors of the club. The Yeltz narrowly avoided relegation and for the 2018-19 season will be playing in the newly formed Evo-Stik South Premier Division Central.

In November 2018 the new management team of Rob Smith and his assistant Larry Chambers were appointed to replace John Hill and Matt Clarke, sadly the 2018-19 season saw relegation to step 4 for the Yeltz with Lee Hughes and Asa Charlton at the helm for the final few games, who were not to blame.

Paul Smith took over as manager in the summer of 2019 as he looks to get the Yeltz back to step 3 at the earliest opportunity.

34 Halesowen Town: Pre-Season Summary

Played: 9

Wins: 5 Draws: 2 Losses: 2

Goals For: 31 Goals Against: 8

A prolific pre-season for Halesowen Town, with three huge victories over Step 5 and 6 opposition, as well as an impressive 4-1 drubbing of Step 2 side Kidderminster Harriers.

They’ll undoubtedly be looking to hit the ground running and make an immediate statement as they seek a return to Step 3, but it’ll be interesting to see if that pre-season form translates into the league (their last friendly saw them draw 1-1 with Step 4 opposition).
