[email protected] INTRODUCTION

The Human Rights Law Volunteering & Internship Handbook was conceptualised to provide information and guidance for students who are keen on pursuing legal careers outside commercial law, particularly in the fields of public international law and human rights. It provides an introduction into the wide range of legal opportunities available for undergraduate and postgraduate students, within and outside the U.K. The Handbook has been conveniently divided into three sections-- Internships, Volunteering Opportunities and Mini-, to cater to students’ various interests.

The opportunities listed here are by no means comprehensive. However, we hope that the Handbook will be of use to you as you pursue the next step to your legal career.

We would also like to thank the organisations for kindly providing us with the relevant information.

Street Legal is a partnership between Praxis, St Mungo’s and Refugee Action which works to prevent rough sleeping among non-EU migrants in London. Volunteers will help to develop and deliver a programme of innovative workshops and information sessions that will empower at-risk communities to prevent or survive destitution and homelessness.

Volunteers will work directly with people experiencing or at risk of homelessness to promote access to good-quality immigration legal advice and knowledge of rights and entitlements around healthcare, benefits and housing. Volunteers will also support migrants with experience of destitution to make their voice heard to commissioners and service providers. Volunteers will help develop training and support for Street Legal’s community champions – volunteers using their lived experience of homelessness and destitution to empower others. Previous experience of group facilitation is desirable. Knowledge of, or strong interest in, issues around homelessness and migrants’ rights is essential.
