S T C A L N R N SA INGLEY S T C VIEW FROM A L N R N SA THE CHAIR INGLEY SATURDAY 7TH APRIL 2018 Welcome to the players, officials and supporters from Drighlington for this afternoons NCL Division 2 game. What a terrible start to the season Drig have had, this will be only their second league game of the season due to the weather. The only game they have played was a narrow defeat at home to Hunslet Warriors. The last time we played Drighlington was in the 2015 season. Both league games went in their favour winning 24 – 20 at our place and 20 – 18 at theirs. We finished that season playing them away in the play off final and got our revenge winning 20 – 17 to get promoted. Looking at those scores today’s game should be another close one. Thanks to everybody who organised and took part in last weekend’s charity day in memory of Phil Wartley. £1,625 was raised in total for Kirkwood Hospice. Our next home game on 21st April against East will be televised live on FreeSports, kick off 4.30pm. At the moment we are trying to get an Alliance or Academy curtain raiser for 2.30pm but nothing has been arranged yet. Don’t forget the cultural afternoon, Sunday 15th April, 4.00pm, a play produced by the Red Ladder Theatre Company, “Playing the Joker”. This is about Eddie Waring and stars Jamie Jones Buchanan. The production has got excellent reviews so one not to be missed. Tickets are strictly limited, on sale now behind the bar at £3. IRRIGATION FUND – We are still raising funds for the irrigation system which will be getting installed in mid June. For a £50 donation you will have your name/message on your own plaque in the foyer (subject to a character limit). See Jon or Tom if you are interested. Have a look at the plaques already in place. CLUB LOTTO - Tickets are on the bar. Only £1 a go to win some cash. Enjoy the game. Registered in Number 130435 Registered Office Address: Westgate Brewery, Wakefield, West , WF2 9SW S A VIEW FROM T C A L N R N SA THE SIDELINES INGLEY BY PHIL HODGSON Last Sunday’s Women’s Amateur Rugby League Final between Wigan St Patrick’s and Moor Maroons ended on an intriguing note, with Pats stand-off Rachel Porter climaxing the clash with a field goal from about 20 metres out. Nothing strange about that, you might ask. Plenty of big games are won with vital one-pointers, after all. It didn’t feel that way to me at the time, though. The score, prior to Porter’s pop at the sticks, was 14-12 in her side’s favour and, maybe more importantly, it felt to me that, given several delays throughout the game, there could have been around five minutes or more left to play; in which case, I couldn’t see the value of going for a field goal that merely extended the lead to three points. There was, as I saw it, a real possibility that the Saints could lose possession at the restart, the danger being, from Pats’ perspective, that the Maroons could snatch what would in all probability be a match-winning try. As it turned out, though, there wasn’t a restart. Porter, clearly, had checked with referee Andy Cuthbert as to how much time was left, and made what turned out to be the sensible decision to celebrate victory with a memorable field-goal. All well and good then (unless you happened to be in the Dewsbury Moor camp, of course) but the episode was another reminder of how prevalent field (or drop, as they’re termed beyond the confines of League Express) goals are these days. It wasn’t always so. Bizarrely, back in the days when they were worth two points, up to the late 1960s, they were a comparative rarity. Of those that spring to mind, perhaps because they didn’t crop up so often, maybe the most important was the one that Leeds scrum-half Jeff Stevenson scored against Whitehaven in the 1957 Challenge Cup semi-final at Odsal, . The Cumbrians were leading by a point, with time running out, and in the days of unlimited tackles were hanging onto possession and seeing the game out before the 50,000-plus crowd. But Leeds somehow got the ball and Stevenson slotted over a long-range drop-goal to take the Loiners to Wembley. Wakefield’s Neil Fox really did buck the trend by landing three drop-goals in the 1962 Challenge Cup Final against , and then there was the famous drop-goal that the great prop Dennis Hartley kicked for Hunslet against in the Yorkshire Cup Final later that year (the Parksiders had been camped on the Robins’ line for some time and when the ball came to Dennis he admitted “I didn’t know what to do with it, so I thought I’d kick a goal.”) When the Rugby Football League introduced the four-tackle (later six-tackle) rule in, I think, 1967, drop-goals suddenly became fashionable as teams had to decide what to do on the last tackle, so the folk at Chapeltown Road reduced the drop-goal’s value to a single point, at which stage they seemed to become more common than ever, with the legendary Alex Murphy, for example, adopting a policy of marking every visit to opposition territory with something to celebrate. They have been very prevalent this season, of course, with Luke Gale’s one-pointer on the cusp of half-time in Castleford’s recent game against Leeds turning out to be the match-winner. I thought Danny McGuire’s field goal for the Rhinos against the Tigers in last season’s Grand Final, again scored in the closing stages of the first half, was in a way worth more than just one point as it stretched Leeds’ lead against a Cas side that was struggling to find its rhythm to what seemed like a massive seven points. landed a similarly huge (both in terms of distance and importance) drop goal for Wigan against Warrington in a Challenge Cup semi-final at Manchester City’s Maine Road back in 1989 which gave the Pie Eaters an important 7-6 lead. So it’s horses for courses really. Sometimes that single point can be vital. But it still seems odd to me that they have been attempted far more often, since having been devalued, than they were before.
