RAF News Brief 2019/2 Organisation Operational Service Medal In 2017, Her Majesty The Queen agreed the introduction of a new Operational Service Medal (OSM) for Op SHADER. In February 2019, Her Majesty The Queen graciously approved an extension of the medal without clasp for personnel assessed as making a significant and direct operational contribution, but outside the joint operational area for Op SHADER. Under new rules, personnel from all three services serving from outside the traditional area of operations, such as operators of RAF Reaper Remotely Piloted Air System (RPAS) aircraft, can now receive the Op SHADER medal without clasp. The award of the medal reflects the changing nature of modern conflict and recognises the vital contribution that personnel working from outside the operational area of Iraq and Syria have made to the campaign. This will be the first time that RPAS crews have received formal medallic recognition. Ground crew serving at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, where UK airstrikes over Iraq and Syria are launched from are also eligible, as well as Army and Navy personnel providing logistic and communications support. Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier, said: “I am delighted to see this wider recognition of the RAF’s vital contribution to Op SHADER. Under the previous criteria, only about 14% of RAF personnel who had supported Op SHADER were entitled to receive the OSM. Under the new criteria, that proportion rises to over two-thirds. I extend my personal thanks and congratulations to all those who will now receive the OSM for their outstanding Op SHADER contribution.” Update on Defence Estate Optimisation Programme The MOD published an update to the Defence Estate Optimisation Programme in March 2019, setting new information for 33 military sites across the UK.

Armed Forces Covenant across Gwent NEWS Summer 2020 Armed Forces Covenant across Gwent The Covenant is a promise from the nation ensuring that those who serve and have served in the Armed Forces and their families are treated fairly. Victory in Europe Day VE Day – or ‘Victory in Europe Day’ marks the day towards the end of World War Two (WW2) when ghting against Nazi Germany in Europe came to an end. Tuesday 8 May, 1945, was an emotional day that millions of people had been waiting for. Many people were extremely happy that the ghting had stopped and there were big celebrations and street parties. In his VE Day announcement, Winston Churchill said: “We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing, but let us not forget for a moment the toil and e orts that lie ahead.” Even after 8 May, many soldiers, sailors and pilots were sent to the east to ght against the Japanese, who had not yet surrendered. VE Day celebrations were curtailed as a result of the coronavirus lockdown. Armed Forces Covenant Training Package The WLGA, with funding from the Covenant Fund, commissioned Cardi and Vale College to produce an Armed Forces Covenant training package. The package consists of a face-to-face training resource together with an e-learning resource. Both resources are aimed at local authority elected members and sta and seek to raise awareness and understanding of the Covenant. There was little gunpowder this Guy Fawkes, but plenty of “treason and plot”. Over the past few months, we have witnessed the NPA making the first big moves against corruption. What started with the arrests of seven people involved in the asbestos saga culminated in the news of the arrest warrant for ANC secretary general Ace Magashule issued on Tuesday, 10 November. The shock waves are reverberating through the ANC.... The “State of Disaster” extended for another month. Surprise, surprise….

  • Not a Lot of People Know This – Podcast 3 – Text
Horse Guards, Whitehall, London, SW1A 2AX HCavMuseum HCavMuseum householdcavalrymuseum In this week’s podcast, the third in the series, I’m going to recount some stories about our animals – and they are not all horses… It’s a dog’s life in the Household Cavalry The Army’s love of mascots and pets is shared by the Household Cavalry, and includes a Newfoundland dog called Duke who attached himself to The Blues during the Peninsula War of 1808-1814. Duke was used by the Regiment during the advance through Spain to flush out rats from deserted farmhouses, prior to the ruins being occupied as bivouacs. Somewhat unkindly, given his ratting duties, the dog was repeatedly traded-in with locals in return for free wine. Nonetheless, Duke always managed to re-join his comrades, returned with the Regiment to England and became something of a hero: his portrait still hangs in the Officers House of Household Cavalry Regiment at Bulford. Another Blues dog, Spot, belonged to Captain William Tyrwhitt Drake and was present at the Battle of Waterloo; he was also memorialised with a painting, by William Henry Davis, painted on 5th November 1816, which hangs in the Mess at Hyde Park Barracks. That is not, however, the end of doggie tales of The Blues and Royals, for there exists in the reserve collection of the Household Cavalry Museum at Combermere Barracks an engraved silver dog collar, embellished with medal ribbons, which attests to the existence of Bob, a mongrel dog who served with The Blues before, during and after the 2nd Boer War.
