LAST GAME — Dec. 21 (Chicago 5 at Colorado 3) The Blackhawks scored three goals in a 5:21 span late in the third period to rally for a 5-3 victory over the Avalanche at Pepsi Center. Trailing 3-1, Patrick Kane started the rally with a goal at 11:22 and Kirby Dach scored the equalizer 28 seconds later at 11:50. Dominik Kubalik gave Chicago a 4-3 lead at 16:43 and Connor Murphy added an empty netter. Matt Calvert scored twice for the Avs, and Ryan Graves also lit the lamp for Colorado.

TONIGHT: AVS HEAD TO VEGAS FOR FINAL GAME BEFORE HOLIDAY BREAK The Colorado Avalanche takes on the Vegas Golden Knights in the final game before the NHL's annual Holiday Break. The Avs will be off the next three days before hosting the Minnesota Wild on Friday. There have been no games on Christmas Eve since 1972 (when three were played) and none on Christmas Day since 1971 (when six were played). The Avs are 9-3-1 in their last 13 games, which included a season-best nine-game point streak (8-0-1) from Nov. 27 to Dec. 13. The Avs, who also had an eight-game point streak earlier this year (7-0-1 from Oct. 3-19), are one of two teams to record two different point streaks of at least eight games in 2019-20 (Boston is the other). The Avs are 14-6-1 in their last 21 games and 6-3-1 so far in December.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS Regardless of tonight's result, the Avalanche will finish with one of their best records at the NHL’s Holiday Break. Here are the club's best records at Christmas since relocating to Denver in 1995:

Year Record Pts Pts% 2000-01 23-7-5-0 51 .729 2013-14 23-10-3 49 .681 1997-98 19-8-11 49 .645 2009-10 21-12-6 48 .615 2001-02 21-13-4-0 46 .605

AVS & GOLDEN KNIGHTS Tonight is the second of three meetings between the Avalanche and Golden Knights this season and the second and final matchup at T-Mobile Arena. The Avs won the first meeting here by a 6-1 final on Nevada Day (Oct. 25). That was the first road win by either team in this all-time series, as the home team had won all six matchups between the Avalanche and Knights prior to that.

SEASON SCHEDULE Oct. 25 @ VGK (W, 6-1) Dec. 23 @ VGK Mar. 15 vs. VGK

CONNECTIONS Pierre-Edouard Bellemare played for Vegas during their first two seasons ... Paul Stastny was drafted by Colorado (second round, 44th overall) in 2005 and played his first eight seasons with the Avalanche from 2006-14 ... Nick Holden skated for Colorado from 2013-16.

LANDY 600 Gabriel Landeskog is expected to play in his 600th NHL game tonight, becoming the 10th player in franchise history—and fifth in Avalanche history—to reach 600 career games. The second overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, Landeskog will become the second player from his draft class to reach 600 games, joining Sean Couturier (614).

ALL-STAR CAPTAIN Nathan MacKinnon was named the Central Division’s captain for the 2020 NHL All-Star Game, the league announced on Saturday. MacKinnon will make his fourth straight appearance at the mid-season classic when the 2020 Honda NHL All-Star Game is held on Jan. 25 in St. Louis. MacKinnon is the first Avalanche player to be named All-Star captain twice (Joe Sakic wore the 'C' once) and the first Avalanche player to be selected to four straight All-Star Games since Peter Forsberg was selected to six straight from 1996-2001. As of Sunday, MacKinnon ranked third in league scoring with 53 points (21g/32a) in 36 games. He reached the 50-point mark in his 32nd game of the season on Dec. 13, one fewer than when he hit the milestone in 2018-19. Nathan became the second player in Avalanche/Nordiques history to require 33 or fewer games to reach 50 points in consecutive seasons, joining Quebec’s Peter Stastny in 1981-82 (31 GP), 1982-83 (29 GP) and 1983-84 (31 GP).

HIGH-SCORING ATTACK As of Sunday, the Avalanche ranked second in the NHL in goals scored (127), goals-per-game (3.53) and goal differential (+27), trailing only the Capitals in all three categories (131 goals / 3.55 per game / +30).

THAT'S A PLUS As of Sunday, Ryan Graves was tied for the NHL lead in plus/minus rating at +24. It's the best plus/minus by an Avalanche player through 36 team games since Ray Bourque was +24 through 36 contests in 2000-01. Graves had a streak of eight consecutive games with a "plus" from Nov. 27–Dec. 11, going a combined +14 during that stretch. He was the first Avalanche player to post a +1 rating or better in eight straight games since Peter Forsberg from Jan. 2-15, 2004 (eight) and the first Colorado defenseman since Adam Foote from Feb. 19–March 5, 1996 (eight).

ROAD, SWEET ROAD Colorado is 12-6-1 on the road, tied for the second-most away wins as of Sunday behind only Washington (16). The Avs are 5-1-0 in their last six road contests and 7-2-0 in their last nine.

FRANKIE FIVE ANGELS Pavel Francouz is 8-0-1 with a 1.92 GAA and .941 Sv% in his last 11 games. As of Sunday, Francouz ranked second in the NHL in both save percentage (.934) and goals-against average (2.16). He ranked first in winning percentage (.808, 10-2-1).

ONLY THE LONELY The Avalanche are the only NHL team who has yet to participate in a shootout in 2019-20.

TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT The Avs are 10-5-2 at home this season. Colorado is 16-5-2 in its last 23 regular-season home games and 20-6-2 in the last 28 at Pepsi Center including playoffs.

FIRST IN WEST TO 20 With a 3-1 victory over the Flyers on Dec. 11, the Avalanche became the first Western Conference team to reach 20 wins this season. This is the third-fastest Colorado team to reach 20 wins in a season (31 games), trailing only the 2013-14 squad (27th contest) and 2000-01 club (28th). The Avalanche reached the 40-point mark in their 29th game on Dec. 7, surpassing 40 points in less than 30 games for just the third time since relocating to Denver. The 2000-01 team reached 40 points in their 26th game (19-4-3-0) and the 2013-14 squad reached 40 in their 27th (20-7-0).

CLIMBING THE PPG CHARTS Gabriel Landeskog scored his 48th career power-play goal on Thursday night against Carolina, passing Paul Stastny (47) for sole possession of 10th place in franchise history and fifth place in Avalanche history. Nathan MacKinnon is tied with Valeri Kamensky (51) for seventh place on the franchise's all-time power-play goals list, which is the fourth-most in Colorado history.

WORKING OVERTIME Nathan MacKinnon has two OT winners this season and eight in his career, one behind Milan Hejduk for the most in franchise history. The single-season club record is three, a mark already tied by MacKinnon in 2017-18. Nate is tied with Peter Forsberg for fifth place in franchise history with 38 career game-winning goals.

IN WITH THE NEW Offseason additions Joonas Donskoi (13 goals), Andre Burakovsky (13) and Nazem Kadri (11) all rank among the Avalanche's top four in goal scoring, combining for 37 (or 29%) of the club's 127 total markers. All three forwards rank among the Avalanche's top-six point producers as well, as they've picked up 74 points (37g/37a) between them in 36 games.

YOU HAD TO BE A BIG SHOT Nathan MacKinnon ranks second in the NHL with 166 shots. MacKinnon, who led the NHL with a franchise-record 366 shots last season, has a shot in 187 consecutive games, the second longest active streak (Dougie Hamilton 283). Nathan led all players with 79 shots in November, which were the most ever by a Colorado player in a calendar month. He recorded a career-high 12 shots on Nov. 1 vs. Dallas, tying the single-game franchise record set by Gabriel Landeskog on Jan. 9, 2019 at Calgary.

BACK-TO-BACK The Avs have played six of their 12 back-to-back games, going 5-1-0 in the first contest and 3-3-0 in the second. Colorado has swept three of its back-to-backs this season, split two and got swept in one.

THE MORE THE MERRIER Four different Colorado goaltenders have earned a win in 2019-20, making this just the second Avalanche team to feature four different goaltenders with a victory in a single season (also 2005-06). No other NHL team has four different winning goaltenders this year.

SEEING STARS IN NOVEMBER Nathan MacKinnon was the NHL's Second Star for the month of November. He finished second in the NHL with 25 points (10g/15a) in 14 games despite the team missing two of its top producers from last season for almost the entire month. MacKinnon’s 25 points were a career high for any month and set a franchise record for the month of November. This was the third straight November that MacKinnon has been named one of the league's three stars, as he was the NHL's Second Star in 2018 and First Star in 2017.

ROOKIE OF THE MONTH Cale Makar was the NHL's Rookie of the Month for November. He became the first Avalanche defenseman to ever be named Rookie of the Month, and the first Colorado player since Gabriel Landeskog in February 2012. Makar led all rookies and all NHL defensemen in points (16) and goals (7). His 16 points were the third-most ever by a rookie defenseman in November, trailing Larry Murphy (18 in 1980) and Nicklas Lidstrom (17 in 1991), and the most by a rookie defenseman in any month since Alexei Zhitnik (19) in March of 1993 with the Kings. Makar's seven goals tied the franchise record for a defenseman in a single month and equaled the third-most ever by an NHL rookie blueliner in one month.

THIS DAY IN AVS HISTORY Dec. 23, 1997 - Jari Kurri scored his 600th NHL goal in a 5-1 win over the Kings at McNichols Arena, becoming the eighth player in league history to reach 600 goals.
