Kite Flying

1. Kite flying is a popular activity for the general public that may be conducted at any suitable location in Hong Kong. It is frequently carried out during weekends and public holidays when the weather is fine.

2. The Air Navigation (Hong Kong) Order permits kite flying up to a maximum height of 60 m (200 ft) AGL, but prohibits kite flying within 5 km of an aerodrome.

3. The following are some of the locations that are frequently used for kite flying activities :

a) in the - at Siu Lam and along the shores of Port Shelter, and ;

b) in Kowloon - along the coast of Clear Water Bay Peninsula and in Clear Water Bay Country Park;

c) on Hong Kong Island - at Shek O.

4. It is emphasised that the list of locations in para. 3 is not comprehensive and kite flying may be conducted at any suitable site in the Territory during daylight hours.

5. Kites are normally of a small dimension with simple lightweight construction, however during periods of suitable winds large kites having dimensions of 2 m (6 ft) or more may be flown, and some of these may have sturdy frames.

6. Kite flying should not present a serious hazard to normal aircraft operations, however pilots may be momentarily distracted by the sudden appearance of kites. Therefore if pilots observe a kite flying within 5 km of an aerodrome or above the permitted height, they should advise ATC so that the information may be passed to other pilots and the police advised.

7. AIP Supplement C02/02 is hereby superseded.
