About Today’s Performance Hindustani music has been performed for centuries in the regions that are now the countries of , Pakistan, , and Afghanistan.

Hindustani music is based on modal melody types called . They typically have extra-musical meanings that correspond with a time of day or night, season, or occasion. The musician improvises the melody within “rules” of a particular raga, which include characteristic phrases and emotional nuances. No two performances of the same raga will be alike.

In a sitar recital, the performer may play an alaap, jor, jhala, and gat – the solo sitar plays for an extended period, first in slow free rhythm, then introducing steady pulse, moving into high speed, all before the tabla enters in a tala, a rhythmic cycle of set number of beats. Or, the performer may simply play a brief alaap followed by the appearance of the tabla in one or more improvised pieces based on compositions in the given cycle. About the Performers The DePaul University School of Music welcomes Pt. Nayan Ghosh and his son Ishaan back for their third performance at DePaul. They gave a well-received performance at DePaul as part Chicago World Music Festival 2010, and they returned for a second successful recital in Spring 2013.

Pandit Nayan Ghosh (b. 1956) is acclaimed in India and around the world as one of India’s foremost musicians, with an unusual dimension – he is the only maestro with superlative command of both the sitar and tabla. Deeply loved by musical luminaries such as , Yehudi Menuhin, , and the legendary Ahmedjan Thirakwa, he enjoys an unusually high level of respect from his contemporaries and younger musicians. He is already held as an important reference source for a new generation of music seekers. Hindustani Music Concert • April 16, 2016 about the performers Son and disciple of the 20th century tabla wizard and nephew of Indian classical flutist , Nayan has inherited a rich and learned legacy. He has represented India at some of the most prestigious international music festivals and universities across Europe, USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, North Africa and the Far East. He has also taught as a distinguished visiting professor at Kent State University and Emory University.

Presently, as Director of one of India’s leading music academies, the Sangit Mahabharati in Juhu, Mumbai, Nayan is imparting advanced training to numerous young aspiring musicians. He is also a Distinguished Guest Professor at IIT-Bombay, teaching tabla, sitar, vocal and musicology at the Cell for Human Values. Nayan played a vital role in the completion of his late father’s magnum opus The Oxford Encyclopaedia of the , which was published in 2011 after 50 years of extensive research.

Born in 2000, in a family steeped in music, Ishaan Ghosh took to the tabla naturally and gave his first brief solo tabla performance at the age of 2-1/2. In 2008, Ishaan played Tabla Jugalbandi concerts with his father and guru, Pandit Nayan Ghosh, at international music festivals in Switzerland, France, and Spain.

In 2010, Ishaan accompanied his father on an extensive concert tour of USA and Mexico. His solo recital at the Helen Mills Theatre in New York was much appreciated, as were his accompaniments to his father’s sitar recitals at the World Music Festival in Chicago, Northeastern Illinois University, California State University, Sacramento, Georgia Tech, MIT, the Chapala Museum and the Guadalajara Cultural Centre in Mexico, and the Palace Theatre in Hawaii. He has also performed at prestigious venues in India such as the Sangeet Research Academy in , the National Centre for Performing Arts, and Nehru Centre Auditorium in Mumbai. In addition to accompanying his father, Ishaan has also performed with stalwart Ustad and young sitar virtuoso Sahana Banerjee. Hindustani Music Concert • April 16, 2016 about the performers Along with immersion in musical study, practice and performance, Ishaan continues his studies in the seventh grade.
