South western Queensland August 2020

Steve Popple

An 8-day trip of 2000km through south western Queensland from the Sunshine Coast along the Moonie and Balonne Highways to Cunnamulla, north to Charleville returning via Roma to the Sunshine Coast.

Splendid Fairy- provided some excellent photo opportunities

In late August 2020 to escape the ever present discussion and news cycle of Covid 19 we decided to take a short break exploring a part of Queensland we had never visited. Day 1 was dedicated to exploring the Sunshine coast hinterland before heading out to Kilcoy then onto Yarraman before turning off for Dalby arriving late in the afternoon. This trip was intended as a quick reconnaissance for a future longer camping trip so we arranged our accommodation in caravan park cabins along the way to maximize our time birding.

A late afternoon walk along the Myall Creek Park, Dalby which had appeared to recently had a major upgrade yielded our first Superb Fairy-, Weebill and Double-barred Finches. The next day we were keen to spend much of our time at Lake Broadwater National Park before heading west to St George. We arrived at Lake Broadwater at 8.00am and though the weather was sunny the wind was blowing strongly across the lake making birding in open areas rather unpleasant. The area around the hide was good for with both Red-winged and Red-rumped Parrot putting in an appearance. Galahs were busy squabbling over tree hollows on the lake foreshore. The lake itself was rather sparse for with Grey Teal, Black Swans and Australian Pelicans most obvious with a single Hoary-headed Grebe the only species of note. To escape the wind, we headed to the Wilga Bush camping area which is more heavily vegetated providing a much more pleasant birding environment.

The camping area was only sparsely occupied and the surrounds had enough birds to make it worthwhile. We quickly picked up some of our target species including Inland Thornbill, Yellow Thornbill, White-winged Triller and Striped . Unfortunately, we flushed a pair of Quail from beside a track that provided no opportunity for identification.

Continuing along the Hwy rather than stop in Moonie we continued a bit of town and took the first road on the right (Green & Whites Road) which had a protected gravel pit stockpile area only 100 metres from the intersection. Over lunch the birding was surprisingly good with Superb Fairy-Wren, Fan-tailed , Eastern Yellow Robin all feeding around the edges of the clearing. A bit of roadside birding on the way to St George yielded nothing of interest and we arrived in at the Pelican Rest Caravan Park in time for a late afternoon tea. The next morning, we headed back east of St George to a waterhole approximately 30km out of town that we had visited briefly the previous day looking unsuccessfully for White-browed Treecreeper. After some reassurance overnight that this was the correct location from a birding friend we were hopeful to track this species down. The birding gods were smiling as within 10 minutes of arriving we encountered two feeding groups of Treecreepers that gave us some good photo opportunities. A small group of Chestnut-rumped Thornbills were feeding in the same location. Back at the waterhole a single Black-fronted Dotterel was patrolling the water’s edge.

Feeling very satisfied we head back to St George and out to E J Beardmore Dam which has an attractive expansive picnic area below the dam wall. We were rather surprised to be the only visitors on a sunny Sunday morning with no one else present for the couple of hours we birded the area. The main dam body held only Australian Pelicans, a small flock of Australian Wood Ducks and a solitary White-necked Heron. The pools below the dam had both Yellow-billed and Royal Spoonbills carefully segregated in different trees. The picnic area itself and surrounding woodland provided interesting birding with Rufous Songlark, Brown Tree-Creeper, Spiny cheeked Honeyeater, Weebill and Red-winged Parrot encountered. A lone Common Bronzewing was feeding along the entrance road and a pair of Masked Lapwings were busy defending their three chicks from any potential predators. An Australian Hobby made a lightning dash through the picnic area causing some consternation among the feeding Apostlebirds.

White-browed Treecreeper male.

Later in the afternoon we headed out to the Buckenbah Weir which has a small rest area adjoining the weir. Small groups of Cockatiels regularly flew over with some stopping to check out potential nest holes in the dead trees standing in the water. A couple of Rock Doves were an unwelcome sight as well as a feral patrolling the sparse waterside vegetation. Clumps of reeds held several Australian Reed- Warblers that were vocally proclaiming their territory. A group of Purple-backed Fairy-Wrens kept us entertained as we tried to capture some images. As dusk approached the numbers of parrot species coming in to drink increased with Red-rumped Parrots, Galah, Little Corella and Sulphur crested Cockatoo arriving unfortunately the hoped for Major Mitchell Cockatoo didn’t appear. On the way back to St George the powerlines over recently harvested paddocks held large flocks of Cockatiels.

Leaving early the next morning we continued our journey west coming to a quick stop not far from St George when a flock of 15 Major Mitchell Cockatoos flew over the road unfortunately they continued on and despite a hasty u turn we failed to relocate the birds. A healthy stand of scrub 24 km west of St George provided more Inland Thornbills and our first Splendid Fairy-Wrens, Budgerigars and Diamond Doves of the trip. A bit further down the road we turned off to explore both sides of the road at a Telecommunications Tower. After a slow start we came across several groups of Splendid Fairy-Wrens and a pair of Red-capped Robins that posed obligingly for photos.

The town of Bollon seemed a good spot to break the trip and pulling up in the middle of town a pair of Mallee Ringnecks were feeding on the front lawn of the Police Station. Rushing across the road we managed to get sufficient photos before the birds moved off. There is an excellent Creekside walk that runs from the camping area along Wallam Creek and we spend an enjoyable lunch break watching the birds along the fringing gum trees. Spotted Bowerbird was a new addition to our trip list and couple of campers told us that a pair of Brolgas were displaying on the edges of nearby dam earlier in the morning. The free camping area appears to be popular with overnight campers and it’s worth noting that if you turn left as soon as you enter the camping area there is a riverside picnic table that’s perfect for having lunch.

Continuing onto to Cunnamulla we stopped at Munda Munda lake which fortunately contained water and was surrounded by wildflowers bought on by rain earlier in the year. We ended up getting our chairs out and just sitting in the shade watching the birds for several hours. When we arrived a group of 6 Brolgas were feeding on the far side of the lake whilst the lake held good numbers of Grey Teal, Pacific Black Duck, Australian Wood Duck and a few Pink-eared Ducks along the shoreline a pair of Sharp-tailed Sandpipers were feeding. The lake surrounds were filled with bird activity with White-browed and Masked Woodswallows, Zebra Finches, and Budgerigars constantly on the move. A trip highlight and a new addition to my life list here was a pair of Southern Whiteface. This spot was very birdy and well worth a stop particularly if there is water present.

Southern Whiteface

Needless to say our arrival in Cunnamulla was rather late and our well located cabin booked through Cunnamulla Cabins was much appreciated and highly recommended. Our target tomorrow was Paddabilla Bore (aka Eulo Bore) so we rose early and left town at first light with the objective of birding our way out to the bore having lunch there and then working our way back in the afternoon. Perhaps only ten minutes out of town we came across three Brolgas feeding by the roadside and then a bit further one a male Australian Bustard was displaying. At first we weren’t quite certain what we were seeing as it was the tallest thing on the grassy plain as we approached down the highway. What then followed was pretty much a Mexican standoff as we walked out onto the plain the Bustard moved away and so one, there seems to be some sort of prescribed social distancing for Bustards. Leaving him in peace to strut his stuff we headed on down the road. It some became apparent that the area west of Cunnamulla had received more rain than the town itself and the number of wildflowers and flocks of Budgerigars increased as we went along. Arriving at Paddabilla Bore with its fairly stark landscape made worse by the number of vehicles stopping for free camping we set out looking for Hall’s Babbler. A large group of Babblers were soon encountered however despite trying very hard we could not turn them into anything other than Grey-crowned Babblers. As we moved further away from the bore the vegetation improved and we came across Mallee Ringnecks, Blue Bonnets and a Bourke’s Parrot. Returning back to the bore all of the overnight campers had departed so we settled down to watch the bore area. The main activity was constant fly overs by Zebra Finches and Budgerigars. A pair of Singing settled into a low bush for shelter making brief forays into the water. Just as we were getting ready to leave a pair of Crimson Chats appeared out on the flat capping off an excellent birding session. We slowly worked our way back to Cunnamulla finishing the day at Cunnamulla weir which proved to be fairly quiet apart from some Emus along the road and a pair of Mulga Parrots.

The next morning, we headed out on the road past Bowra Station stopping only to stare forlornly at the closed sign on Bowra’s gate. Next time both Bowra and Hall’s Babbler will be on the agenda. Stopping roadside, we found an area with bird activity and had good sightings of Hooded Robin, Bourke’s Parrot, more Crimson Chats and Masked Woodswallows. As the morning passed it became increasingly windy making birding difficult returning to Cunnamulla we visited the Evaporation Ponds where we were greeted by a Spotted Bowerbird. The ponds are densely lined with reeds and Australian Reed Warblers were calling constantly. Water birds were limited to a few Hardheads, Coots and both Australasian and Hoary-headed Grebes. Leaving the ponds, we visited the Bushland Gardens on the edge of town. This site doesn’t look much from the road but the network of paths, waterways and plantings attracted some interesting birds despite the strong wind. At the entrance we encountered a group of White-winged Fairy-Wrens a real trip highlight interestingly they were having a territorial dispute with Purple-backed Fairy-Wrens. We also managed our best views of Greater Bluebonnet which we found rather difficult to approach elsewhere. Late in the afternoon we headed west from Cunnamulla to Sheep Station Creek and spent a couple of hours watching flocks of Budgerigars (including one flock of 300 birds) and Zebra Finches wheeling around before coming in to drink.

Early the next morning we left Cunnamulla for Charleville with the wind still blowing strongly across the plains. Stopping at what seemed like the first stand of roadside vegetation half an hour from Cunnamulla yielded a Pallid Cuckoo, Hooded Robin, Greater Bluebonnet and Masked Woodswallow. Seeing a sign as we approached Wyandra for ‘The Beach’ we decided to take a break and check it out. The Beach is an informal picnic area on the edge of a sandbar on the Warrego River. The was some interesting bird activity in the river side vegetation including White-winged Chough, Olive backed Oriole and Restless Flycatchers. If you are looking for a spot to break the drive this spot is a very pleasant way to spend some time. After a quick look at the sewerage ponds and a lunch break in Charleville we started our journey back to the coast heading to an overnight stay in Roma. There is a picnic area on the outskirts of Mitchell signposted as Fisherman’s Rest that provided a relaxing break and some interesting birding including White-throated Gerygone and Purple-backed Fairy-Wrens.

We had intended to stay in Roma for two nights but our cabin at The Big Rig Caravan Park was rather dismal so we decided to leave after spending the morning birding around town. The Roma Bush Gardens or Railway Dam is a large park area that had good numbers of birds though it would benefit from more plantings and maintenance. The park had large numbers of Superb Fairy-Wrens it seemed every section had its own resident group. Red-rumped Parrot, Pale-headed Rosellas seemed to enjoy the seeding grasses and a mixed flock of Weebills, Yellow Thornbills and White-throated Gerygone were seen. On the dam there was an assortment of birds including a flock of Plumed Whistling Ducks, Hardhead and Australasian Grebe. A brief visit on the outskirts of town to Lake Neverfill produced only a small list of birds with 5 Red-rumped Parrots getting chased by a Magpie Lark the only highlight.

The trip from Roma back to the Sunshine Coast was uneventful despite the fact that Google maps took us on an interesting back road diversion at one stage. Overall the trip was a great success and our only regret was not having the time to head further west at a time when the country was looking good after recent rain.
