WORLD SOIL HEALTH DAY World Soil Health Day was celebrated at ICAR -K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hulkoti on 05-12-2017 in collaboration with State Department of Horticulture, Gadag. The event was inaugurated by Smt. Roopa Angadi, Vice-President, Zilla Panchayat, Gadag with the theme on “Caring for the planet starts from the Ground”. She addressed the gathering that the protection and preservation of healthy soil is important as it is required for all living things for food production. Further, she said that it is our responsibility to leave a healthy soil and healthy environment for the next generation. In this regard the farmers must take care of protection of healthy soil.

The programme was presided over by Shri S.P.Baligar, Chairman, Standing Committee on Agriculture and Industry, Zilla Panchayat, Gadag. He stressed upon the farmers to adopt water and soil conservation measures, organic farming, application of fertilizers based on soil test report and soil enhancement technologies.

Smt. Shakuntala Mulimani, Member, Zilla Panchayat, Gadag requested the farmers for adoption of traditional agriculture practices which were practiced by our ancestors. The Chief Guest and Resource Person Dr.P.L.Patil, Professor and Head, Department of Soil Sciences, UAS, Dharwad delivered lecture on enchancement of all required properties of soil.

Zilla Panchayat Members, Taluk Panchayat Members and Gram Panchayat Members and Agriculture / Horticulture Department Officers were present on this occasion. Soil Health Cards were issued to 585 farmers. More than 800 farmers and farm women participated in the programme.

FIELD DAYS ORGANISED 1) Field day on Azolla and Green Fodder: On 16-10-2017, ICAR-K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hulkoti organized field day on Azolla and Green fodder production at Hirehandigol village in Shri Veeranagouda Jakkanagoudar field. The Chief Guest of the function Dr.S.S.Patil, Deputy Director, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, Gadag addressed the gathering about the importance of fodder production. Further he said that Balanced diet during lactation is important for increasing the milk production. The exposure visit to fodder demonstration plots like Hybrid

Napier, DHN-8, Grazing Guinea, Rhodes Grass, Signal Grass and fodder crops like Sorghum and Lucerne was organized

2) Millet crops: On 25-10-2017, ICAR-K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hulkoti organized field day on Millet crops at Hulkoti village in Shri Nagappa Halli’s field. Shri Channappa Budihal, President, Federation of Millet Growers Association, Dharwad, Haveri and Gadag district participated as Chief Guest. He said that in drought situation, the cultivation of millet crop is important. Millets can sustain drought and gives good yield. Further, he said that apart from production of millets, the consumption of millets is also very important as they are rich in fiber and mineral content. Shri G.R.Odugoudar, Progressive farmer spoke on importance of consumption of millets for healthy life. Shri V.D.Vaikunthe, SMS (Agronomy) briefed about the cultivation of millets and the activities taken up by KVK for the popularization of millets in all adopted villages of KVK. Dr.Sudha V. Mankani, SMS (Home Science) briefed about the processing and value added products of millets. The various schemes of Karnataka State Department of Agriculture were briefed by Shri Naganur, Agriculture Officer, RSK, Hulkoti. On this occasion, the Progressive farmers Shri V.G.Hiregoudar, Shri Siddappa Karikatti and Shri Ashok Halli shared their experiences in millet cultivation. More than 150 farmers and farm women attended the Field Day.

3) Spreading Groundnut crop: For the year 2017-18, Cluster FLDs under National Food Security Mission, the field day on Spreading Groundnut crop was conducted on 26-10-2017 at Mahalingapur village of Gadag district. The field day was organized in Shri Vasappa Lamani’s field and KVK Scientists briefed about agronomic practices as well as pest and disease management for higher productivity.

4) Groundnut and Onion crops: On 01-11-2017, Field day was organized on Groundnut and Onion crops in Shri Basavareddeppa Radder’s field at Kochalapur village of Ron Taluk. The farmer leader Shri Shivanagouda Aiyanagoudar briefed about the importance of adoption of technologies for higher returns. Shri V.D.Vaikunthe, SMS (Agronomy) briefed about the special features of demonstrated KDB-123 variety of Groundnut. Similarly Shri K.T.Patil, SMS (Horticulture) briefed about the cultivation and nutrient management in Onion crop. The pest and diseases and their management was dealt by Shri S.K.Mudlapur, SMS (Plant Protection) of KVK. More than 100 farmers attended the field day.

5) Sunflower crop: Field day on Sunflower crop under National Food Security Mission was organized at Kochalapur village of Ron Taluk on 06-11-2017 in Shri Renakanagouda Gudageppagoudar field. The President of the function Shri Veerayya Meti, Retired Horticulture Officer and Smt. Savithri Shivanagoudar, Agriculture Officer, RSK, Naregal spoke on need of adoption of agriculture technologies for higher productivity. KVK Scientists Shri V.D.Vaikunthe, SMS (Agronomy) and Shri S.K.Mudlapur, SMS (Plant Protection) briefed about the agronomic and plant protection measures in Sunflower crop. More than 100 farmers participated in the event.

6) Sunflower crop: Under Cluster FLD on Sunflower crop of National Food Security Mission on Oilseeds for the year 2017-18, the field day on Sunflower crop was conducted on 22-11-2017 at Eklaspur village of Mundaragi block. It was organized in Shri Veerabhadrappa Ronad’s field. Shri V.D.Vaikunthe, SMS (Agronomy) briefed about the Integrated Nutrient Management in Sunflower. Shri S.K.Mudlapur, SMS (Plant Protection) explained about the pest and disease and their control measures. More than 100 farmers participated in the field day.

7) Chilli crop: ICAR-K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hulkoti in collaboration with Syngenta organized field day on Chilli crops at Kurthkoti village on 28-11-2017. Field day was inaugurated by Gram Panchayat Member and Progressive farmer Shri Appanna Inamati. He said that due to climatic variation there is decline in productivity and quality of Chilli crop and farmers need to take up organic farming practices. Shri K.T.Patil, SMS (Horticulture) briefed about the cultivation practices in Chilli crop and Shri S.K.Mudlapur, SMS (Plant Protection) explained about the pest and diseases in Chilli. The various schemes of Department of Horticulture were briefed by Shri Shailendra Biradar, Senior Assistant Director of Horticulture. Shri Shivanand Hiremath, Officer, Syngenta Company provided information on Chilli Hybrids. More than 150 farmers attended the programme.

MAHILA KISSAN DIWAS ICAR-K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hulkoti celebrated Mahila Kissan Diwas on 15th October, 2017 at Binkadakatti village of Gadag Block. The event was organized at Ramakarunananda Math in the presence of her holiness of Smt. Mallamma Amma. The programme was inaugurated by Smt. Shobha Meti, Member of Zilla

Panchayat, Gadag and she enumerated women’s role in farm activities. Further, she said that adoption of improved technologies as well as creation of additional income generating activity is important for economic security of farm families. The Chief Guest Smt. Shakuntala Mulimani, Member of Zilla Panchayat, Gadag addressed farm women to adopt new technologies in agriculture for increasing productivity and income. Further, she said that with the support and guidance of KVK, farm women need to take-up the various additional employment activities for economic security of farm families. On this eve, eight progressive farm women of the district were felicitated for their achievement in agriculture. Debate on role of women in agriculture, agriculture quiz competition and rangoli competitions were organized. Competition on preparation of various value added products from Sorghum was also and these items were kept in exhibition. Winners were given prizes. The Gram Panchayat Member Smt. Jayashree Hulloji and Shreshta Krishik award winner Smt.Sarojini Agasankoppa were also present on this occasion. More than 200 farm women attended the programme.

WORLD FOOD DAY ICAR-K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hulkoti celebrated World Food Day on 16th October, 2017 at its premises. The programme was inaugurated by Shri M.G.Patil, Retired Principal, Co-operative Training College, Dharwad. He called for efficient use of resources for sustainable farming and formation of farmers organization to address the agrarian crisis. Further, he said that initiation of various programmes for youths involved in agriculture to create interest in agriculture and to reduce the migration is very important. Shri G.D.Hugar, President, Water User Co-operative Society, Chikkalakatti village, Ramadurga taluk presided over the function. Shri S.H.Adapur, SMS (Ag.Extension) spoke on objectives and importance of organization of World Food Day. More than 100 farmers participated in the event.

CELBRATION OF JAI KISAN AND JAI VIGYAN WEEK – DEC 23-29

1) Farmers Day:

I. ICAR-K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hulkoti in collaboration with Karnataka State Department of Agriculture, Gadag organized Technology Week from 23rd to 29th December, 2017 with the Celebration of Farmers Day on 23-12-2017. The programme was inaugurated by Dr.B.B.Channappagoudar, Associate Director of Extension, RRS, Vijayapur. He called upon the farmers to conserve soil and water and adopt Integrated Farming System. The farmers must develop good contact and linkage with Scientists for successful adoption of technologies in the field.

Dr.S.S.Patil, Deputy Director, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, Gadag participated as Guest. He requested the farmers to take up additional income generating activities. Shri Amaranath, Deputy Director of Sericulture briefed the various schemes of Sericulture department. The programme was presided over by Shri G.R.Odugoudar, Progressive farmer and President of Mango Growers Association. He requested the farmers to form more and more number of Farmers Producer Associations. Smt. Shakunthala Kondabingee, Member, Krishik Samaja, participated as Guest. On this occasion Shri S.M.Hiremath and Shri Mahadevagouda Neelappagoudar were felicitated. Dr.L.G.Hiregoudar, Head of KVK, Gadag welcomed the guests and briefed about the importance of Technology Week Celebration. More than 300 farmers and farmwomen participated in the inaugural programme.

Agricultural Exhibition was organized during the occasion. After the inaugural session, the technical sessions on identified thrust areas were conducted to farmers and farmwomen.

II. Soil Fertility: Shri N.H.Bhandi, SMS (Soil Science) participated in Farmers Day organized by Karnataka State Department of Agriculture, . He delivered lecture on soil fertility and importance of soil testing. More than 180 farmers participated in the programme. The programme was organized in village of Shirahatti block.

2) Exposure visits: On 24-12-2017, under NICRA programme, an exposure visit of 27 farmers to University of Horticulture Sciences, Bagalkot was organized. During the exposure study visits were organized to demonstration plots of various orchard crops, value addition, green house, agriculture implements units. In addition, visit to KVK, Bagalkot was also organized to see various demonstration plots and units.

3) Field day on Redgram crop: Cluster FLD under NFSM Pluses on Redgram variety TS-3R variety was organized by ICAR-K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hulkoti on 25-12-2017 at Attikatti village of Shirahatti block. Shri Halappa Chauvan, President, Gram Panchayat, addressed the farmers to adopt new technologies and participate in field days to know as to how to increase the productivity of crops. Integrated Pest and Disease Management and adoption of organic farming practices are important as said by Chief Guest Shri S.B. Ramenahalli, Agriculture Officer, Department of Agriculture. Shri V.D.Vaikunthe, SMS (Agronomy) briefed about the cultivation aspects of Redgram crop. Farmers shared their experiences on the demonstration of Redgram crop taken-up by KVK, Hulkoti.

4) Special programme for Mothers and Childrens: On 26-12-2017, ICAR-K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hulkoti in collaboration with Paravatevva Hirebasappa Halimani High School organized an awareness programme on Healthy food for healthy life to students and mothers at Eklaspur village of Mundaragi taluk. Shri D.Durgaprasad, Head Master spoke on how to

overcome malnutrition, iron deficiency and the foods to be consumed daily. SMS (Home Science) of KVK Dr.Sudha V. Mankani, spoke on Balanced diet and nutrition and the ill effects of consumption of bakery products and Pizaa nodules etc,. Further, she said that high consumption of maida, dalda, sugar may lead to health problems. So the daily consumption of millets is important to overcome health problems and to maintain good health. Further, an exposure visit to Nutrition Garden was organized. More than 50 Mothers and 100 school children participated in the programme.

5) Training to Extension Personnel: On 27-12-2017, ICAR-K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hulkoti organized training to Extension Functionaries of Karnataka State Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, Gadag. The programme was inaugurated by Shri Vasanna Kuradagi, President, Zilla Panchayat, Gadag. He spoke on importance and awareness of various research outcomes and inventions on Animal Sciences and transformation of information to Extension Functionaries working in rural areas. Smt. Shakuntala Mulimani, Member, Zilla Panchayat, Gadag spoke on importance of management and nutrition of milch animals in the Indian context. Further, she said that awareness to farmers on immunization schedule for animals is important. Dr. S.S.Patil, Deputy Director, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, Gadag spoke on feeds and fodders, disease management etc.

6) Farmers Seminar: Shri S.H.Adapur, SMS (Ag.Extension) participated as Resource Person in the Farmers Seminar organized by Reliance Foundation, Gadag at Shagoti village on 28-12- 2017. During the Seminar he delivered lecture on Importance and scope of Farmers Producer Company and requested farmers for initiation of Producer Companies

7) District Level Cashewnut Seminar: ICAR-K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hulkoti in Gadag district of Karnataka State organised “District Level Seminar on Cashewnut” on 29-12-2017 at its premises. The event was jointly organised with Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development, Cochin. Inaugurating the event, Dr. Venkatesh Hubballi, Director, Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development, Cochin said that, the promotion of Cashewnut crop is the need of the hour as there is lot of demand for raw nuts in . Government of India is providing incentives to farmers for cultivation of Cashewnut crop. The Directorate is planning to promote Cashewnut in 1.50 lakh hectares every year. Government has identified Gadag, Haveri, Uttar Kannada and Chitradurga districts as the potential districts in Karnataka State for Cashewnut cultivation, he said.

Dr. T.R.Guruprasad, Associate Director of Research (Retd.), University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot participated as Resource Person. He addressed the farmers on production technologies of Cashewnut cultivation, processing and marketing. He said that red sandy loam

soils of Gadag district are most suitable for Cashewnut crop cultivation and requested the farmers to take up planting of Cashewnut crop. Later, he answered to the queries made by the farmers about several aspects of Cashewnut cultivation.

Shri Shailendra Biradar, Senior Assistant Director of Horticulture, Department of Horticulture, Gadag, Government of Karnataka spoke on the schemes of Department of Horticulture for promotion of Cashewnut crop.

Dr. L.G. Hiregoudar, Programme Coordinator of KVK, Hulkoti said that KVK with help from Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development, Cochin has already promoted Cashewnut crop in an area of 700 Acres during 2017-18 in Gadag district. Further he said that, KVK is planning to promote Cashewnut crop cultivation in 1000 acres during 2018-19 by motivating the farmers through awareness programmes, trainings, exposure visits and interactive meetings with progressive farmers already cultivating Cashewnut crop in Gadag district.

Shri G.R. Odugoudar and Shri Ishwarappa Hanchinal, President and Vice-President of Gadag district Cashewnut Growers Association respectively, spoke on the need for alternative crops like Cashewnut crop to bring income security to the farmers.160 farmers of Gadag district participated in the event.

FIELD VISIT:

The field visits to Cashewnut orchards were organized in the villages of Gadag, Shirahatti and Mundaragi Taluks. Dr. T.R.Guruprasad, Retired Associate Director of Research, University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot was impressed by the successful establishment of Cashewnut crop on farmers’ fields. The Cashew growing farmers interacted with Dr. T.R.Guruprasad on various aspects of Cashewnut cultivation and got very good guidance from this Expert-Scientist interaction during the field visits arranged on this occasion.

ON-FARM TESTINGS

 On-Farm testing on Rabi Sorghum varieties namely SPV-2217 and BJV-44 under sand mulching were laid out in 4.8 hectares in 6 farmers’ fields in Eklaspur village of Mundaragi Block.

 On-Farm testing in Bengalgram crop varieties namely NBEG-3, JAKI-9218 and GBM-2 for higher productivity were laid out in 3.6 hectares in 3 farmers’ fields in Khanapur village of Naragund Block.

FRONTLINE DEMONSTRATIONS

 Demonstration of Integrated Crop Management on UAS-334 variety of Wheat crop was conducted at Khanapur village of Naragund Block in 7 farmers’ fields in 4 hectares of land.

 Demonstrations of Rabi Sorghum varieties namely SPV-2217 and BJV-44 in 8 hectares in 20 farmers’ fields were conducted in Madolli (Shirahatti Block) and Binkadkatti (Gadag Block), Kochalapur (Ron Block) and Khanapur village (Naragund Block) for higher productivity.

 Cluster FLDs under NFSM-Pulses in Bengalgram-JAKI-9218 variety was conducted in 40 hectares in 100 farmers’ fields at Khanapur village of Naragund Block.

 In collaboration with NMOOP, Hyderabad demonstration of Integrated Crop Management in Safflower crop with PBNS-12 variety was laid out at Karamudi village of Ron Block in 40 hectares in 100 farmers’ fields.

 Demonstration of Nutrition Garden was laid out in Hulkoti village of Gadag Block and Eklaspur village of Mundaragi Block.

 Under NICRA project, demonstration of Rabi Sorghum variety namely SPV-2217 in 30 acres in 30 farmers’ fields and M 35-1 variety in 50 acres in 50 farmers’ fields were conducted in Mahalingapur village.

 Demonstrations of Integrated Crop Management in Bengalgram crop of JAKI-9218 variety were laid out in 10 acres in 10 farmers’ fields at Mahalingapur village (NICRA programme)

 Under NICRA project, demonstrations on Integrated Crop Management in Horsegram of GPM-6 variety were laid out in 5 acres in 5 farmers’ fields at Mahalingapur village.

SPONSORED PROGRAMMES  Under the sponsorship of Malaprabha Command Area Development Authority Belgaum and Tungabhadra Command Area Development Authority, Munirabad, KVK trained 1063 farmers. The training topics included Water and Soil Conservation Methods, Management of Agriculture and Horticulture crops in the Command Area, Plant Protection measures, Cultivation and Importance of Millets in daily diet.

 Under the sponsorship of Ministry of Science and Technology and SEVAK-NGO Belgaum, KVK organized two days training programme on Nutritious food to prevent Iron deficiency among women and youths. A toal of 73 young girls and women attended the training programme.

 ICAR-K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra under sponsorship of GITSERD, Hulkoti organized 20 days training in Dress Designing at Asundi village of Gadag Block.

 Six days EDP and Food processing training was organized by ICAR-K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra under sponsorship of GITSERD, Hulkoti. During the training, the skills on preparation of Masala powder & Instant mixes along with packing, labeling and licensing were imparted to the trainees.

 KVK trained 32 youths on Scientific Dairy Farming under the sponsorship of GITSERD, Hulkoti.

TRAINING PROGRAMMES

 Four trainings on Integrated Crop Management in Rabi crops was organized to 210 farmers in Khanapur village (Naragund Block) and Karmudi village (Ron Block)  The training programme on Scientific Poultry Farming was organized to 44 youths.  Two trainings on EDP and Multiple IGAs were organized to 119 Self Help Group Members  On 23rd October, 2017 the training on Orchard Management was organized to 14 participants.  Two trainings on Organic farming and Vermicompost production technology were organized to 82 participants on 24-11-2017 and 08-12-2017.  The Integrated Pest Management training was organized to 271 farmers in 7 batches.  A total of 63 Anganwadi workers of Women and Child Welfare Department working in Mundaragi Block were trained in Balanced diet, Nutrition and Importance of Millets in diet.  Under NICRA project 5 trainings were conducted to farmers and farm women on Organic farming, Recharge of open-well and bore-well, Pest and Disease Management in important crops, Importance of Value Addition in Millets.
