Aspects of a healthy Catholic Spirituality The Religious orders & their Spirituality

You do not need to have attended previous class sessions to attend this class.

St. Agatha, also known as Agatha of , is one of the most highly venerated of the Catholic Church. It is believed that she was born around 231 in either or , Sicily to a rich and noble family. From her very early years, the notably beauful Agatha dedicated her life to God. She became a consecrated virgin, a state in life where young women choose to remain celibate and give themselves wholly to Jesus and the Church in a life of prayer and ser- vice. That did not stop men from desiring her and making unwanted advances toward her. However, one of the men who desired Agatha, whose name was Quinanus, because he was of a high diplomac ranking, thought he could force her to turn away from her vow and force her to marry. His persistent proposals were consistently spurned by Agatha, so Quinanus, knowing she was a Chrisan during the persecuon of Decius, had her arrested and brought before the judge. He was the Judge. He expected her to give in to his demands when she was faced with torture and possible death, but she simply reaffirmed her belief in God by praying: "Jesus Christ, Lord of all, you see my heart, you know my desires. Possess all that I am. I am your sheep: make me worthy to overcome the devil." With tears falling from her eyes, she prayed for courage. To force her to change her mind, Quinanus had her imprisoned - in a brothel. Agatha never lost her confidence in God, even though she suffered a month of assaults and efforts to get her to abandon her vow to God and go against her virtue. Quinanus heard of her calm strength and ordered that she be brought before him once again. During her interrogaon, she told him that to be a servant of Jesus Christ was her true freedom. Enraged, Quinanus sent her off to prison instead of back to the brothel -- a move intended to make her even more afraid, but it was probably a great relief to her. Agatha connued to proclaim Jesus as her Savior, Lord, Life and Hope. Quinanus ordered her to be tortured. He then sent her back to prison with an order of no food or medical aenon. But the Lord gave her all the care she needed. He was her Sacred Phy- sician and protector. Agatha had a vision of the apostle, St. Peter, who comforted her and healed her wounds through his prayers. When she was returned to prison, Agatha prayed, "Lord, my Creator, you have ever protected me from the cradle; you have taken me from the love of the world, and given me paence to suffer: receive now my soul." Agatha is believed to have passed into Heaven around the year 251. St. Agatha is the patron of Sicily, bellfounders, breast cancer paents, Palermo, rape vicms, and wet nurses. She is also considered to be a powerful in- tercessor when people suffer from fires. Her feast day is celebrated on February 5.

Prayer: Saint Agatha, you suffered sexual assault and indignity because of your faith and purity. Help heal all those who are survivors of sexual assault and protect those women who are in danger. Amen

NOVENA FOR STEPHEN’S ORDINATION

Our seminarian and parishioner, Stephen DiMassimo, will be ordained a deacon on Saturday, April 18. To prayerfully support him, I ask our faith community to join in a novena for Stephen. Pray at least one rosary for him once a week for nine weeks. You may pray before Mass or at home by yourself or with a friend or family (wouldn’t it be wonderful for whole families to pray for Stephen.)

This is an advanced noce. The Novena begins the week of February 16. It ends on the date of ordinaon.

Please pray specifically for these intenons for Stephen: ♦ Connued conversaon and configuraon to the Person of Jesus, ♦ For greater openness to the Holy Spirit, ♦ For spiritual protecon and guidance, ♦ For the grace of purity of heart and chaste celibacy as a future deacon and future priest, ♦ For consolaons from the Heart of Jesus, ♦ For a deeper relaonship with and devoon to the Blessed Virgin Mary, ♦ For recollecon and peace of mind and heart.

When Stephen’s Diaconate Ordinaon date gets closer, we will share how we will celebrate as a community.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

Play That One Again

How many times have you sung the church song, “Here I Am, Lord”? If you grew up Catholic and are around my age (still 50!), the answer is more than you can count. The song that quotes various verses of Scripture is sung using guitar, piano, or organ, by cantors and choirs, in traditional and modern churches. It is truly a Cath- olic greatest hit of the modern Church. The question is how many times when singing the refrain have you re- ally taken to heart what you were singing.

“Here I am, Lord; is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.” Like the biblical figure , we are responding to the call of God by asking for clarification that we are indeed the one being called. We then fol- low up the question with a profound statement: “I will go if You lead me.” It is profound because we are pledging to our God that we are willing to go wherever He wants. We are accepting the challenge put forth in the U.S. Bishops’ pastoral letter, “Stewardship: A ’s Response,” to become mature disciples who re- spond to the call of Jesus Christ regardless of the cost. We have sung this pledge repeatedly for many years.

We never have any idea what God will call us to do and where to go. Sometimes the request can ask us for quite a lot. Hopefully, we respond like a mature disciple. If not, maybe we should reflect more the next time this song is played. The melody will not allow for the words, “I will see if I am busy and then decide to go if you lead me.” Then again, I don’t want to sing that to God, the source of all life anyway. Do you?
