Dear Mr. Weston, Mr. Leighton, Mr. Chant and Ms. Van den Berg:

In January, 2010 Loblaw (Atlantic Super Store) made a commitment to Bathurst that has not been forgotten in this community.

We understand that there are many worthy organizations in Bathurst that could benefit from Loblaw’s Community Investment Policy: therefore we are writing to introduce you to the Association Maison Doucet Hennessy House Association, Inc. (AMDHHA) in Bathurst to gauge Loblaw’s interest in helping the Association meet one of its most important goals - the purchase of the Doucet Hennessy House at 375 St. Peter Ave. - within view of the Atlantic Super Store.

There is some urgency to this request as the house is in danger of being sold to outside interests by August 30, 2011. If that happens, it will, in all likelihood, be torn down and the site redeveloped. We hope agrees that it is not in the best interest of the City of Bathurst or its citizens to lose one of the last, continuously occupied, historically significant buildings in northern New Brunswick.

The fact is there are no other buildings in the City of Bathurst of such social and historical significance as the Doucet Hennessy House. It has stood like a sentinel atop St. Peter Avenue hill since 1858 when, it is believed, the current structure was built above

1 the original foundation - which still exists - of a building constructed circa 1808 by the son of the enigmatic Acadian pioneer, Charles "Charlitte" Doucet (1706-1798).

For the first 100 years, the property was owned by the Acadian Doucets and Hacheys - for the last 100, by the Irish / Scottish Kanes / Hennessys. Now in its second century at the same location on St. Peter Ave., it is more than just a building and land: it is an historic monument on the city’s landscape and a symbol of its founding peoples – Aboriginals, Acadians, Irish, Scots and English – that we firmly believe is worth saving.

The cost for the house and land, including legal fees, insurance etc. is approximately $55,000.00. Knowing Loblaw’s long history with the City of Bathurst, we hope that its own legacy include partnering with the AMDHHA in purchasing the house so that our Association may develop this one of a kind heritage place into a major, self-sustaining tourist attraction for the City of Bathurst.

We have consulted with the Chaleur Regional Economic Development Commission, Tourism and Parks and the NB Heritage Branch and with their financial assistance will soon be undertaking a historical research report and architectural analysis of the Doucet Hennessy House. There will follow a feasibility study / business plan that will give us a sitemap for future development.

For your information, the AMDHHA is a registered Canadian charity which was established in March, 2010 to maintain, restore and preserve the historic Doucet Hennessy house located at 375 St. Peter Avenue in Bathurst. Attached you will find a background document which explains the AMDHHA’s mission, background, recent activities and its short term fundraising goals including a budget for the purchase of the Doucet Hennessy House.

More information can be found at our interactive website www.DoucetHennessy.com, including YouTube videos featuring the 2009 scientific research study of wood core samples by Mount Allison University's Dendrochronology Lab, photo galleries that showcase the exterior and interior of the house, and archival documents such as petitions, grants, deeds and wills dating back to 1790.

If you have any questions about this request for assistance, please feel free to contact us at 506-548-5624 or by email at [email protected].

Yours sincerely,

Patricia Mary Anne Hennessy Co-President, AMDHHA
